Let's talk about Maternity Clothes!

Sooo lets hear all about your great bump-friendly finds! I'm a FTM and clueless when it comes to maternity clothes.
I am personally looking for lots of tank tops for layering under cardigans and other shirts. I have a really long torso anyway, so I'm hoping to find really long tanks.
Also need some pants that are appropriate for work. My khakis and cords are just really uncomfortable now.
Should I stick with Gap and Old Navy, or are there other stores I should look at?

Re: Let's talk about Maternity Clothes!

  • Pink blush maternity has some awesome transitional stuff like tunics and long tshirts/tanks that don't scream "maternity" which I'm hoping will work even afterwards..... And target yoga leggings are super comfortable and, again, should work when I'm NOT pregnant as well. I'm all for looking cute but I'm not interested in spending a ton on a wardrobe I'll be in for 6 months.

  • Destination Maternity had some good online deals the other day. Waiting to get them to try them on. I am tall too and found Old Navy had some great maternity tanks during my last pregnancy. I had to wear a uniform last pregnancy so I was limited in choices. Now I need dresss pants so am trying other stores! Target also has nice long tanks. Burlington has cheap shirts too. Walmart has some cheap shirts online I am going to order and try then return if needed
    Good luck!

  • Well...my husband and I attempted to go shopping this weekend and it was very discouraging..

We went to four different stores, old navy, target, Khols, and Walmart..

Target does have a maternity section...but I don't wear "dress up" work clothes..my office is a t-shirt, jeans, sneaker kind of place..guess I could have bought some nice clothes...I was more focused on getting stuff for work.

The old navy I went to said they didn't have a maternity section...

Khols, at least the one I went to, didn't have one either..

By the time we left I was so discouraged I was in tears..

Walmart had one small rack of some of the ugliest tops and pants I had ever seen..

My husband was so good about the entire afternoon even going so far as to ask associates if they had a maternity section..he was very helpful and supportive.

I know you asked for helpful advice and I'm sorry if this is taken as a bitchfest..I was so frustrated and just needed to vent...

If anyone knows of other places to shop please let me know...

    Thanks ladies ....
  • I found online to be the best bet..sorry yoy had a rough experience. I felt that way with my last pregnancy as I lived in a small town without lots of store choices. Burlington COat Factory has great stuff-if you are on the West Coast, Ross was mentioned on my other BMB. I found ordering a variety of stuff and trying it on and returning what I don't want or didn't like the easiest route.

i bought my maternity clothes at target, motherhood maternity (they have good sales- i only shopped the sale rack), and kohl's (also only on sale and with coupons).

i just bought regular tank tops at target- their tanks are very long and stretchy and i was able to wear them through my entire pregnancy.

We do live in a small town and the closest large city is about an hour away...the biggest metropolitan area is four hours away so we are limited to shopping when we can...there is a Ross though...I'll have to look into that..and the online shopping.

    Thank you!!

I'm pretty limited too. I have Macy's who are expensive and completley ridiculous for clothes I'll barely be wearing. Target who's maternity section is horrible (like six racks) Our Old Navy has no maternity section, and I've never been in our Ross. I may have to take a look into them. Other than that, I will have to go online.

    -----------qbf--------------------------

Isn't it crazy that there really isn't a whole lot of choices?!? I mean women are pregnant all of the time...there is a motherhood maternity store in the mall but I'm not sure about the pricing on their merchandise...

I agree with you about things being crazy expensive and you're only going to wear them a little while..

Sure there are lots of yoga pants out there but I'm the only female in an office of men and would not feel comfortable wearing those here...they just see me as one of the guys lol but still..
  • And Motherhood Maternity prices were crazy too! My other pregnancy was opposite seasons so I need to buy either way! Good luck shopping everyone! Also, if you are tall or have a long torso, go with maternity tanks. You will need the length! I bought regular ones at first and then learned as I grew in size, they became belly tanks.

  • Ann Taylor Loft has great work stuff. It's a little expensive but they have really good sales and coupons if you join their online site. I got tons of stuff for 50/60% off and even 70% right after Xmas. With the sales you can get Target/Old Navy prices easily on slightly nicer stuff.

If you're FTM and looking for less feminine stuff I would say just buy a belly band. You can pull it up over your normal pants and just leave them un-buttoned underneath. I'm still rocking my skinny jeans after almost 15 lbs of baby weight with my belly band.
  • Motherhood Maternity, and A Pea in a pod are exclusively maternity/nursing clothing stores. They have nice stuff. Also, remember not everything needs to be maternity. I do a lot of yoga pants and I have also confinscated some of my husbands button down shirts as well. Victoria Secert yoga pants are great if you can get away with them anywhere.
  • Adding H&M to the list. I went in person to a store and the section was tiny but I tried on pants for sizing and then ordered online. I did full panel pants last pregnancy for all my pants and didn't like it so this time I've purchased all underbelly (although I'll be wearing some of what I already had). I have the same style as OP mentioned, trying to layer long tanks with sweaters I might already have.

I consignment shopped and got one pair of Old Navy jeans and one pair of GAP maternity, both cute. I know a lot of ladies like GAP Maternity but I know it's expensive so I haven't visited the store myself. I like Target's non-maternity long and lean tanks to wear all the time, not just during pregnancy. Old Navy sizing is tricky, I thought last time, so I'd order a couple things at a time instead of a huge order to avoid tons of exchanges if possible. Unless you already know your size there from non-maternity stuff.

  • Motherhood has pretty good pants. I bought two pairs of jeans and one pair of slacks there. The sizes run big, I am normally a 2X and at Motherhood I was only an XL. Vanity sizing :)

I've had almost identical experiences to you--and I live in a big city! Target had 2 racks in their Maternity "section"--the rest of the section was taken up by clearance. Kohls had 2 racks, JC Penney had nothin', and Old Navy had nothin'. I so wanted to avoid shopping online because I'd prefer to try things on prior to purchase. It
    is discouraging!

Also, I really wanted to purchase stretchy nursing tanks rather than buying straight maternity tank tops. Anyone have any suggestions for where to get them? I bought one on Steals.com (they have one featured Baby deal a day!), but that's it.

  • If you don't mind shopping online, I just ordered some stuff from asos.com and it's very cute and affordable. My only advice is that their sizes run large so go down a size (or two). They also have free shipping if you spend more than $40 (I think) and free returns.

I also like to try before I buy...I'm not much for online shopping but it looks like options are pretty limited..

  • I just got my order from Destination Maternity today which I ordered Monday. Super happy with all of the 3 pants I ordered and a skirt. The sizes run true and they fit nicely. ;)

I'll have to remember that...I've seen adds for zulilly? Anyone have any feedback, good or bad, with them?
  • @Andindria‌....

Oooh ok...I had no idea how that works...good to know.

    Thank you so much.

  • I've found that the Gap and Macy's have had the best selection for Long sized pants. Also, do you have an outlet nearby? Some of these exclusive maternity stores will have outlets. At least in my area they have some with some good deals.

  • I've been ordering online because aside from the big maternity stores other stores are so limited. I love the kohls motherhood jeans they have plus and petite, and kohls will let you return in store even if they don't carry maternity in store. Old navy does free shipping and return shipping so tanks and tees I got from there. I really want a great pair of black skinnies that I can wear with my tall boots...but haven't found any that work for me yet :(
  • I don't live in a small town and my options aren't that great either. Plus I travel to a very large city for work twice a month and can't find anything better there. Honestly, the best options are online and i know it sucks not being able to try on before buying, but that's just the stink of it with maternity clothes.

Unfortunately I'm needing to replace nearly everything i had with  my last three kids as my youngest is 8 and I didn't keep much maternity stuff. Even if i had, it wouldn't be "in style" LOL. Stuff is different now than it was 8 years ago.

I will say that I bought some BeMaternity brand like sport leggings from Target here and they're my favorite so far. They're comfortable and fit nice. I bought a pair of jeans there too with the side stretch panels as I didn't need a big belly pouch yet, but i have trouble keeping them up. I'm hoping it's because my belly isn't big enough yet. I also have some just regular yoga pants that fit fine for now.Since I work from home and only travel for work a couple times a month, I don't have to dress up most days.

Probably will be ordering from Old Navy this week and see how it fits. My store in town also doesn't carry in store - online only. Don't know if i've ever seen one that does.

  • I got an awesome pair of pants for work from J. Crew, the maternity Pixie pant. They're so comfortable they changed my life. Worth every penny.

My mom also found me 2 pairs of Gap maternity pants for work from Goodwill, try there if you don't want to spend a lot, the pants were $5.99. Everyone gets rid of their maternity stuff at Goodwill so it has a pretty good selection.
  • I am loving what I found at Macy's and the Be Maternity brand at Target is wonderful!!! Well worth the money!
  • I live for my maternity leggings from target by Liz Lange. Totally recommend them! Also, old navy has great online sales for tanks which are great for layering. Currently stressing over what to wear on date night with my hubby this Saturday!
  • Target has lots on clearance right now too. Found some cheap sweaters and skinny black pants all from 7.00 to 13.00. I am trying to get by with what I can for my new job as once summer comes, will be easy to find cheaper stuff like shirts and skirts.

Unfortunately not..the closest outlet is in Dallas or San Antonio..

I miss living in the big city!!!

  • I bought a couple of tops from old navy and a few things from pea in a pod (shopped their clearance which had an extra 40% off!) and plan on buying from asos once I get bigger.
  • I have been lurking/browsing Asos.com since hearing about it ore pregnancy. They definitely have a lot of stuff there and good prices.

FYI not all Old Navy's have a maternity section. If you use the store locator on their website it will tell you which ones do have it.

I got a couple pairs of jeans from Motherhood Maternity about a month ago and I'm really pleased with the way they fit. I'm already wearing those regularly. A couple weeks ago I stocked up on some tops and shorts from the online store because they had a sale plus bogo. Def get on their mailing list because I've noticed they run sales pretty often. I got quite a few tanks in different colors for like $3 each or something like that. Pretty sweet.
  • Swap.com is amazing and cheap! Otherwise I find a little here and there, no one place has everything I need. :(

  • I bought a belly band and so far it's working I'm 16 weeks. I found some nice leggings from destination motherhood.
  • This has been very frustrating for me. For once, it's actually been easier to find pants than tops... I'm really short (4'10"), but I've been able to find a good line of petites jeans online from Motherhood Maternity. But the hunt for flattering shirts is driving me crazy!!

I have three prominent keloid scars right front and center on my chest/sternum area. They are visible unless I wear shirts that come up to my clavicle. It's not a big deal on my own time, but I always cover them at work. I work in HR and associates will deflect in our conversations or just cross boundaries if my scars are visible. It's already hard enough to find high-necklines in regular clothes. It's near impossible in maternity clothes. :-<

  • My "pregnancy uniform" consists of maternity yoga pants and cotton shirts from old Navy online. Luckily I was able to get away with wearing that (and flip flops, thank god) to work.

I plan to buy more of the same this time around. Old navy's clothes are comfy but not the greatest quality so the yoga pants are pretty faded (maybe from me wearing them too much lol)

  • I hate maternity pants just because my belly is growing doesn't mean my butt is! So after a discouraging shopping trip I am sticking to leggings and long shirts. Super comfortable and looks good! I Almaty paid $20 for a shirt at h&m but decided to goto frenchys instead and got 6 things for $22. I mostly wanted long tank tops an cardigans. Found lots!
  • Andindria said:

Anyone know if there are any maternity dress pants that are not skin tight everywhere but the belly area. Where I work I can not wear tight clothing and I'm coming across that issue..

I was looking for a pair of black pants last night...ann Taylor loft has dress pants, I'm a fan of their regular dress pants so maybe take a look at those.

AshCHB I have a keloid scar. My dermatologist treated it with steroid shots to flatten it and says he has a laser that can change the color back to skin color. I haven't lasered mine yet because I'm pregnant but just an FYI if yours bother you.
Maybe you could find flattering tops without regard to the neckline and add a scarf? Good luck!

  • Just got an email.... Gap maternity and old navy have huge maternity online sales today. Spoil yourselves a little!
  • Some Ross stores have a small maternity rack of clothes. I got three shirts and a pair of jeans for just over $35. I thought that was a good start.
