Birth Story!

Now that I'm finally getting a chance to sit and breathe, I wanted to tell you girls about my sweet boy's birth. Thank you for all the support here and on Facebook. It sure has been a whirlwind these last four days.

Thursday morning, I woke up to go to the bathroom. I had gotten up 3 or 4 times before that during the night with no problems, but when I stood up this time, my water broke and soaked my pants. I dripped all the way to the bathroom, and knew without question that my water had broken. I was doing nothing strenuous. Just sleeping. My husband was at work, and I called him to meet me at the hospital. I drove myself there, but I wasn't in pain or labor, so I was ok. I was 30.6 weeks.

When I got to the hospital, I was 3cm. The most beautiful sound in the world was when they hooked up the monitor and his heart was beating away. From that point on, I knew everything was going to be ok, no matter what. He was still ok and we were where we needed to be. Even though I wasn't feeling them, the monitor was showing I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes. They gave me magnesium to try to stop the labor, but when I was checked again, I was 5cm and the contractions were getting painful. He was determined to be born. I got the epidural (I went into it unsure, but let me tell you it was the most magical thing in the world, and I wanted to hug the anesthesiologist), and the relief let me relax a bit. I stayed at 5cm for a few hours, but then I went from 6-10cm in about 2 hours. At the very end, the baby's heart rate dropped low, and I was scared to death. They put oxygen on me and kept having to stimulate his scalp.

We went back to the OR delivery room (Just incase of emergency since he was premature), and I vaginally delivered my son Logan after only 10 minutes of pushing. I got to watch him come out via mirror and it was all the incentive I needed to push and push hard. He came out crying, which was music to my ears. The cord was wrapped tight around his neck, which was what was causing the heart rate drops at the end. They did put a breathing tube in his throat, but it was mainly to help him since he was breathing on his own, but working hard at it. However, due to the NICU at my hospital being full (It's a small hospital), a neonatal transport team was sent to come get my bubs and he had is first ambulance ride to a hospital about 45 minutes away. Being away from him was hard the two days I was in the hospital, but I am glad he is where he is because it is actually closer to my house and is a top-notch NICU. He has his own room/pod and we have our own sleeper sofa and bathroom with 24 hour visitation, and we are loving getting to spend so much time with him.

His latest update is that he was down to room air level oxygen on a nasal cannula. They have tried to wean him off completely twice, but he doesn't do too well. He has jaundice and was started under phototherapy yesterday. He is being fed my colostrum via feeding tube and is digesting everything so well. I got to hold him yesterday doing kangaroo care and it was so beautiful! He was so relaxed in my arms being against my skin, and I just wanted to sit there forever. I was so content. Hopefully my H can hold him when we go up later today.

Things have been a whirlwind these past few days. My Christmas decorations are not put away, my dishes are dirty, his room is not done. My baby shower was supposed to be yesterday. Our families have come together and are helping us so much.. cooking, buying us preemie diapers and clothes, praying. After all that happened, I am just so happy to have a healthy baby. Thank you again for all the thoughts and prayers!!
