Potty Training

Won't poop in potty

I trained DD last week and she is extremely successful with pee, hasnt had an accident since day 2 and uses both a small potty and big toilet. However, she REFUSES to poop in the potty and goes in her panties. I have tried to get her on the potty when she's about to poop and she fights me, stiffens up, and holds it in then eventually goes a little while later when I'm not paying attention. She told me she's scared to poop in the potty. I have tried bribing her with stuff she would love but no dice and she ends up getting really upset. My nephew had horrible constipation issues and had a few trips to the dr because of it, so I don't want to go down that road with DD.
Does anyone have advice? Will it get better with time? She generally poops once a day but it's getting old and messy cleaning out panties every day. Btw, she turns 3 Feb 28th. Thanks for reading!

Re: Won't poop in potty

  • Hang in there!! It does get better but it has to 'click' for them... DS1 was in the same boat a few weeks ago and we finally got to the point where he will go poo in the potty. Positive reinforcement, talking about how it's yucky to go in his pants and constantly asking him if he needs to go worked for us. I swear DS2's first words will be 'do you have to go potty?' Good luck!
  • Thank you, we do all those things but she seems legitimately scared. That's funny about your DS2, my DD2 says potty all the time and hangs out in the bathroom with DD1. She should be a breeze to train haha!

This is my DD1 as well... We started panties on Monday at the request of her school and she's done SO WELL, no accidents by Wed. But she absolutely will not sit to poop... She held it for 2 days and then on Thu she pooped in her panties.... She says she's scared or that she doesn't know how. And she's not the type to be bribed, forced or talked into just sitting there to wait and see what will happen... Also timers don't work for her. I totally don't want to be scooping poop out of panties but I just have no clue how to get her to try... And with a Newborn in tow I can't devote ALL my time to potty training... Ughh... Going to follow this thread for sure.
  • if she is scared of the potty maybe step back little and take baby steps... First get her used to pooping in the bathroom in pull up and after that is a success try to transition to the potty.

  • She pooped in the potty last night! I did not see this coming but so proud of her. Thanks for your help ladies!

  • I have been training my daughter for 6 months and she still will not consistently poop on the potty.  With her early rewards system, she got 1 sticker for pee and 2 for poop, 1 pez for pee and 2 for poop and 3 coins for her potty bank.  When she got ten stickers, she got a potty prize.  Now, since she's fairly consistent with pee (after a long time), the only thing I changed is the stickers - just poop stickers now.  We have not had a full week without accidents because of poop - the record is 4 days.  My mom has a special present for the week with no accidents and she's had it since July.  We make a huge deal of when she does poop in the potty but I am tired of taking poop out of her panties.

  • I am in the same boat with my daughter that just turned 4. She tells me that she is scared to poop in the potty too. Have you figured out anything that is working for your little one? I've tried everything in the book: bribing with M&M's, new toy at the end of the week if she has no accidents, go to the movies, watch her favorite shows.. etc. I'm starting to feel like a failure at potty training. We've even gone the route of having her wear long dresses with no pants at home, so that if she has to go, then it will go in the toilet. So far it's worked but it won't solve the poop problem when she starts school. lol.
  • omg. I am so thankful to find this post this morning. I sympathize with you all. I feel like such a failure at potty training. My daughter has been completely pee trained for almost 7 months! She has pooped on the potty maybe 5-10 times over the last 7 months, the rest is in her panties. She is scared to death of pooping on the potty, I have no idea what to do to change it. I like all of you have offered her anything and everything, she is just not a child who can be bribed...its like nothing is worth it to her. She is 3 and in preschool/daycare and they took me aside yesterday because they are frustrated and dont know what to do with her. I just wish I could say or do something to make her fear go away :( I am so emotional over this (I am 7 months pregnant so I know some of it is horomones) I feel like she is ashamed of herself but cant let herself get past the fear, it breaks my heart.

My twins just turned 3 in April. We got serious about potty training the first week of May. I did sticker/toys rewards (bought at dollar store). DD was done in about a week!!! She had a pee accident last week at a birthday party (she was too busy playing), but doesn't think twice about going pee or poop on the potty.

DS-pee was also pretty easy. But he is also holding his poop in (have had to use MIralax twice) and trying to not go. About 1/3 of the time, he will poop on the potty, 1/3 he holds it in and doesn't go and 1/3 poops in his underwear. I also read to try to take the stress off of it. Let him ask for a diaper/pull up and just try to get him to do it in the bathroom. Hopefully it won't take too long. They have to be trained by September for pre school!!

  • I'm at a total loss for what to do about this issue. My son is 3 and has been urine trained since October but has never pooped in the potty. He now holds it in and only goes about once a week in a pull up, sometimes this is only with the aid of a suppository. He's also been on a prescription laxative daily for 3 months and it's not helping. I just don't know what to do! I've tried everything! He has to be trained by September when he starts preschool and I don't know how to even get him to go, much less go in the potty.
  • My son was the same way (he is 2 years 10 months). We went to Toys R Us and he picked out several "Poop Toys." Those toys are sitting on the sink in my bathroom and he gets 1 every time he poops on the potty. It worked! At the beginning he tried to sneak those toys so many times! Haha I think seeing them within his reach helped to motivate him and gave him an immediate reward. And I think it helped that they were toys that he picked out himself. I am glad to hear she went on the potty! :) Good luck with potty training to everyone

  • We finally nailed in about a month before her 4th birthday.  It took 11 months to go a full week and she was one perfect day away from the perfect month.
