Nursery furniture

Have any of you transitioned white furniture to childhood well? I'm starting to question wanting white - we painted the room a light gray and have dark hardwood floors, so white seems nice. I just don't know how well it would transition.
"Childhood" I guess is relative, but my son still uses his white furniture and he's 3.  Of course he's also stuck stickers all over it.  We're moving it to the nursery and getting him other furniture, but this kid is going to be stuck with white FOR-EVER!

FTM question, how necessary would you say a glider/rocker is?  The room we will have the baby in will also have a queen size bed in it and I don't know how much extra space we are going to have for things besides the crib and dresser/changing table.
I think this is a personal preference thing, but for me it was essential.  It was the most expensive thing we bought first time around and worth every.single.penny.  I have used it every day since the day we brought him home from the hospital.  I have slept in it, we have rocked him to sleep in it, we read stories in it.

I don't know if this helps - but this is the layout I'm using for the nursery which will have both a queen bed, crib, and dresser in it:

  • We are actually reusing DD baby furniture and getting daughter new furniture. The baby furniture is from Babies R Us and it's great quality. We thought about letting DD keep it and getting new stuff for baby, but decided to go the other way.
This is what we are doing too.  We have a Davinci Rivington crib, Ikea Hemnes dresser, and a Little Castle glider we got from Target.  I just will need to convert the crib back to a crib (DS is using the toddler bed) and then clean the glider really well and they'll be good to go.

  • Trying not to go overboard. We are buying a modern Ikea crib, we already have a dresser from neighborhood swap and sell for $40 that we painted taupe (using the top as a changing table). We bought a Virginia Brand dutailier glider used for $120 in incredible shape. Have a fisher-price cradle n swing also used but in fantastic shape. That's about it so far. Been looking on Pinterest for color schemes - but I think we're going to go with a yellow theme.
  • Had to post because I'm so excited- we had gone into Babies 'R Us to take a look at nursery furniture and were shocked at the prices. There was a Heidi Klum Collection crib (wtf?) for like $900! No thanks. Anyways, there was one set we really liked and was made of hardwood and was actually reasonably priced. I looked online and for some reason, it was even less expensive online...and then yesterday, I noticed a 20% off sale on nursery furniture. We got the crib, dresser, and changing table topper for a little less than $600! Compared to the $1100 we were looking at from pottery barn, I'm feeling prettttttttty thrifty.
  • I have gotten a few little items here and there...mostly décor that I have seen while out and about and we purchased a few items from our friend that was purging baby items (done with having kids).  I am looking at Etsy right now for a few custom items like changing pad cover, boppy cover and crib sheet because I can't seem to find one darn thing I like in the stores for bedding.  We are looking at an Ikea crib but just not sure.  We know it's a girl so I have been scouring Craigslist everyday for a provincial style dresser to refinish.  I'm ready to paint the room though and at least get SOMETHING done!

  • We got our crib & the matching dresser at Target because we happened to be there the day after they put their baby furniture on clearance. I pretty much forced DH to pop in and look....boy am I glad I did! The set was $600 and we got it for $260! The only thing we didn't get was a glider. The matching one was on sale for $180 but they didn't have one to try in the store and that's one thing I'm being super picky about. I know I'm going to spend TONS of nights sleeping in it so I want to pick a really comfy one.
  • Yea for Craigslist. Got crib and matching dresser/changing table for the price the dresser is brand new

I'm so excited I want to share! Today at church a family we are close with--I used to work at the preschool in their home and help take care of their little boy--offered us their crib! I love that crib so much. Not only do I have great memories of waking up the baby in the morning and taking him out of it, it is exactly my style--a nice dark wood, very solid, sturdy, and stylish! I hope they really do give it to us. I would be so thrilled. Not even kidding, I was just wondering the other day if they still have it and would be willing to give it to us. So it was so nice of the dad to offer!

Not to be greedy at all, but if they're not using the changing table/dresser anymore (the youngest has been potty trained for some time now) then I would be set for nursery furniture! Fingers crossed!
