2nd Trimester

Those with Gestational Diabetes

...Did the doctor just order the glucose test (I know they do it for everyone eventually), or did you have symptoms?

The past couple weeks I have had some spells of dizziness with a feeling of low sugar.  I know this can be common, but should I mention this to my doctor to be safe?

Re: Those with Gestational Diabetes

  • I haven't had symptoms, but I have to have the test done twice (unless I fail the first time) because I had an immediate family member (dad) who died of diabetes, so the family history makes me more likely.  I'll be tested next week and then again at 28 weeks if I pass next week.

  • My doctor ordered it early b/c of family hx of diabetes.  I had no symptoms, not advanced maternal age, not overweight, so that was my only indication for it (dad has type 2).  I had it done at 14 weeks and failed.  I would definitely mention it, especially the dizziness.  Is it possible that you aren't drinking enough water?  Does a snack help with the dizziness?  I think a lot of times GD is sympomless, especially since it isn't common to be diagnosed before third trimester.
  • I was diagnosed early (8 weeks) because of a strong family history on both sides, and because I'm overweight - I failed.

    I had no symptoms.

I've heard that dizziness during pregnancy can be caused by low blood pressure. Do you regularly check yours?

  • If you had GD, your blood sugar would be high, not low.  Doesn't sound like diabetes symptoms to me but you should still call and let your doc know.
