Where did you get your glider/rocker?

My H is working 90 hrs/wk this month, so shopping for a glider is my responsibility. I can't walk for too long or my pelvis tries to break, so I thought I'd narrow things down by asking-- where did you get your glider? The ones on Amazon don't have the greatest reviews, and I kinda want to sit in one before I buy it. I know they have them at BBB & BRU, but those stores are super expensive. Are regular furniture stores worth checking out? Anywhere online you've had success & found good prices?

We did find one at BBB but it was $400 before tax (yes with coupon) -- more than what we paid for all other nursery furniture combined!

Re: Where did you get your glider/rocker?

  • Are there any posted on kijiji you could look at? It's almost no walking that way, and you might end up with a killer deal.

We bought ours at a local baby furniture store. It wasn't any cheaper than BBB or BRU, but the experience was a lot better! ;)

  • I got a relatively cheap one on amazon. Not sure how much we'll use it so I didn't want to spend a ton. It has 4 stars. 100$ with shipping. It should arrive today. I'll let you know if it comes while we're home.
  • I went ahead and got mine from BBB. I had a really good personal experience with the guy that was helping me and it was at the low end price range of their chairs, around $400. I love it, so comfortable (I too had to sit in all of them) and you can pick out fabric for the chair to match your room.
  • I got mine off Amazon because I was looking for a specific color. It is great for us and it was under $200.

We got ours on amazon and they actually had pretty good reviews, and they sell the same exact ones in stores too. The brand is stork something. I'll come back and add a pic. I love it. You could pick the fabric and the color wood. They have the same ones in one of the daycares we toured, so I think they hold up pretty well.

ETA brand is Stork Craft. I'll add pic next.
  • We got a Shermag glider rocker with ottoman in cherry/fern fabric at BRU with a 20% off coupon for $240. They have a similar one at Target for $140, in different colors. We just went to BRU and sat in several to find what we liked, then looked online to find the best price for what we wanted.

  • Walmart only $120 and is very comfy.
  • We got a lazyboy rocker/recliner. We got it at a local furniture store during a "no sales tax" event and paid exactly $499. We tried plenty of rockers and gliders but in the end my H won the debate and we got a lazyboy. Im glad we went this route, it matches our living room furniture and gets plenty of use, but we always fight over who gets to sit in it.

  • We got both of ours at BBB.  One we bought on a whim - it was a Dutallier (SP?) and it was on double clearance - with a coupon we spent about $150 or so.   There were about 3 or 4 on clearance.  Luckily, our clearance find is a close enough match with our current bedroom furniture so we will keep it in our room.  There were a few other choices that did not match our decor (orange, pink, blue) - but at that price and quality we we would have purchased at any color.

I don't know how your BBB is, but I have 2 or 3 near me, but only one really ever has clearance.  I went last Saturday and they had added a few additional chairs.

So - if you have the time - i would highly recommend going to the stores and seeing what they have.

We went to a local baby furniture store as well. Admittedly this was one area we splurged significantly on; I'm embarrassed to say we spent more on the chair as our crib, mattress, bedding, and stroller combined. My husband has bad back problems and none of the chairs that we found at BBB he could sit in for more than 5 minutes without back pain flaring up. We got a nice Dutalier (sp?) custom upholstered chair that glides, reclines, and glides while reclined but looks like a normal living room chair. We struggled with it a lot since the chair was like 2x as much as the runner up chair we found at BBB. However, this was truly the most comfortable chair either of us have ever sat in (it has a high back that you can sleep in too), and we figured that the comfort for us that will use it for hours a day was important and it has a very neutral look we could use in our home office or living room once the baby is more grown up.

My advice would definitely be to look beyond the baby chains to local furniture and baby stores, and figure out what features on the chair are must haves (gliding, swivel, reclining, upholstery, etc.). Then call around before you go as some furniture stores simply might not have chairs that meet your specifications. Also consider if its worth spending a bit more on a piece of furniture that you can use for a longer time, which may help you get comfortable paying a bit more.

This is the chair we got; but we got it in a darker color.

  • We got ours at bru last time and I will be using it again. I believe the brand is shermag. But if you are a Costco member they have one at the warehouses now that I like a lot.

  • I can't even imagine spending 200$ on a chair, let alone 400$.

The glider I used for DD I bought off craigslist for 15$. It broke about 6 months ago, so I looked on craigslist again and found a similar one for 15$. It's not the prettiest thing, and it has a slip cover over it, but it'll do the trick.

  • I had a glider picked out at BRU but looked at online reviews which were terrible. We had this great BRU employee helping us out who told us that honestly, he sees a lot of breaks and troubles with all their gliders because of the rod-spindle concept and that he recommended a recliner.

Of course the recliners are crazy expensive and they only had two models, but we ended up picking one of those and I LOVE it thus far! We had $250 in gift cards to BRU, otherwise we would have gone to lazyboy. We also used a BBB 20% coupon, so the $600 chair was about $270. Lazyboy is much more expensive but probably better quality.
  • Do you ever use FB trading sites? We have a few that are local moms or people in certain neighborhoods, so it doesn't feel shady like Craigslist. I got a nice glider and ottoman for $150 on one for the neighborhood I grew up in. It actually ended up coming from someone my parents know, which is sort of comforting.
  • Craigslist!  :-)  I had been keeping an eye out on there and we went to look at a couple that looked nice, but then I saw this one and it was exactly what I wanted.  It is super comfy but small enough to fit in our room.  The seller bought it at a fancy baby store for her first kid and then had it re-upholstered for her second kid, so she even gave me a lot of extra fabric so I am going to make a head cover and arm covers that I can wash.  (At least that's the plan.  I haven't sewed in a while.  I might pay someone to make them.  lol)  We'll see how it goes once I'm spending a lot of time in it, but for now, I'm very happy with it!

Here's a pic, along with my dog checking it out. :-)

  • We got ours at Target.com. I didn't want to buy one online, but the ones that were at BBRU were either ugly or very expensive. So we read a bunch of reviews on different websites and found one that had pretty good reviews and was in our price range. We decided on this one: https://www.target.com/p/danielle-deluxe-sleigh-style-glider-rocker-and-ottoman-set-espresso-finish-with-beige-cotton-twill/-/A-10892666 It came yesterday (less than a week after I ordered it). It was family tested (me, hubby & kids) and they love it.
  • I got lucky and my Grandmother gave us one that had been just sitting in her den that she never used. It's ugly as sin, but hey, it was comfy and free! We'll be using it again. My bestie got one pretty cheap at Walmart that's way prettier and just as cozy, though :)
  • Thanks all! I've been looking & it seems the #1 thing I need to decide is if I want an upholstered chair or a wood/cushioned glider like the Stork Craft ones. If I go with upholstered, I need to keep looking locally for a deal -- but if I want a wood glider I guess I should test in store & buy on Amazon. I just want to be comfortable...and for it to match...  My H is firmly opposed to CL/2nd hand for anything but straight up hard wood furniture - bed bugs. :(

@healthyfor2 do you think if you sat for an hour or so your butt would be sore? IDK why but I'm paranoid about a sore butt, haha! I do have special cushions so I guess I'll just use one in the nursing chair if I need to. Hmm...

@keilani28 I had no idea Target sold this stuff -- definitely going to check them out!!

@CrystalTrues -- I'm a Sam's Club member, but will see what they have! We are switching to Costco in April, so I wouldn't mind switching early if they have something better...

  • @mangomimosa‌ I was just talking about bedbugs with a friend from New York the other day! I don't think we have much of an issue in Houston (or at least not that I've heard about.) But that's a good point.

Yeah - he swears we have a major issue with them here (large city, Midwest). Lots of his patients in the ER have them, apparently. He's super paranoid.
  • You can check the Websites for both Costco and Sam's club.

I think this is the one they had at the Costco warehouse https://www.costco.com/Ultramotion-by-Dutailier%C2%AE-Sierra-Glider-%2526-Ottoman-Set.product.11601208.html  but At my store it was much less.

The thing that I have learned bugs me is that the Costco website and the warehouse often carry different things, it's almost like they are different stores.  However when the website and the store carry the same item they are almost always cheaper at the store since it is a "cash and carry price" as they put it.

    Good luck on the hunt.

  • @mangomimosa‌ I don't know that I've sat in it for an hour yet, but close to it, and no sore butt! I'll have to test it out and let you know :)
  • +1 for Lazyboy. My inlaws have one for their first grandchild so I got to try it out before making the decision. I have pre existing back and pelvis pain and the chair is great for all of my issues. Good luck!

  • I'm planning on going to ikea and getting the poang rocker.

We don't have the space for a huge recliner/rocker and I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something that im going to use for such a short time. We used a second hand one from a friend with our DS and I honestly just sat on my couch more. For me it's not a must have.

  • I'm having the same issue- they are all so expensive! I like the look of upholstered gliders. This one is on sale for $199 at Walmart and doesn't have horrible reviews. Plus, I prefer buying things from Walmart sometimes since their return policy is pretty lax.

  • We got ours online from Target. It wasn't the cheapest, but I really like it and love the pattern.

And as you can see, our dog has taken quite nicely to it as well :)

  • We also have a Best Chair "Storytime Series" rocker-recliner that we purchased for DS1 from a local baby boutique after a great deal of in-person shopping.  We were picky about the glide mechanism, back height, and other features and ended up being disappointed in options we thought we would love from just on-line shopping.  We were able to customize the upholstery and the microsuede we chose has held up beautifully for over 3 years.  I will be living in it again once this little one arrives.  It is super comfortable for both me and my DH.  The price is a little more than your average glider, around $500, but if you have a local store that sells them, I think its worth the trip to try them out.

  • Amazon! they are super cheap and definitely worth it :)
  • I have an extra wide Dutalier from babies r us. It was around $600 on sale but worth every penny. I still sit in it every day to read to my toddler and there is enough room for her to sit next to me. It's extremely comfortable.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I wanted something cute but especially comfy as I will be spending a lot of time in it and my bottom starts to hurt after sitting for awhile, all since I had weight loss surgery, so we splurged on ours at got it at Crib 4 life, it's oversized and she can someday sit in it with me, we spent $800 for glider and ottoman, got to order it any a lot of choices. I know I'm no help, but it's better to spend a little now and be happy then hate what you get and end up spending more in the long run.
  • Sooo I went to BBB with my nursing pillow & asked for their demo baby -- yup, that was me creepily fake nursing the doll in all the chairs for an hour... ANYWAY I know their wood-frame gliders are nicer than the ones on Amazon, but honestly I was more comfy in those than in the upholstered chairs. Plus, I think buying it online is the only way to get the right colors without waiting weeks! So I think we'll just say screw it & order from Amazon -- hopefully we can repair any issues/use WD40 for squeaks. The extra $250 just is too much for a chair I'm less comfy in. It's good to know so many of you were happy with your Amazon glider!
