I would go for it - it would be a shame to go all the way to Japan and miss out. But I would take care to pick reputable places. The raw fish part is not necessarily what gives you food poisoning - bacteria can be in the rice if not properly stored or handled. You're not likely to have problems if you go to a good quality restaurant. But in the last few days in my city we've had an outbreak of food poisoning (early indications are salmonella) from prepackaged cooked sushi which was bought at supermarkets.
