Spontaneous Twins

I just sold a bunch of twin stuff and everyone who showed up for it had IVF twins, and then recently there have been a lot of new MoMs check in who conceived via IVF. I feel like when I joined it was a wave of spontaneous twins.

If yours were spontaneous, raise your hand!

And - how are you dealing with this surprise now? (I'll answer in the comments!)

Re: Spontaneous Twins

  • Mine were spontaneous. DH and I were completely surprised. There was no family history before us. It has been fun, but difficult. They are doing great. We had dh sister move in to help us out.

  • Spontaneous here too. Definitely took me about 3-4 months to absorb that we were even preggo (cause we were done and needed fertility for our last baby who is now almost 5).  I know there are babies in there but I still do not think it will TRULY hit me until I am physically holding TWO babies!!

  • Ours was an absolute total unexpected surprise that came out of left field too. No WAY did I expect it at all (our first US was 1 baby....)

To be honest, I'm still struggling with it. And I don't think I realized it was as bad until this past weekend. I honestly feel like I was cheated out of a second pregnancy and getting to do it over again with baby #2 with a sense of been there, done that.

I think the stress of the higher risk pregnancy, the "record scratch" that happened when we went from happily expecting 1 to freaking out and expecting 2, and having to move right away (they were 6 months old when we moved out of our 2 bedroom apartment) and just the logistics of caring for two babies has made it hard to enjoy each of the girls.

ok I hope that all comes off ok, it is so difficult to put it in words without sounding ungrateful!!

  • Spontaneous fraternal here. We were trying for #4 and lucked out with #4 and #5
  • Spontaneous! We are excited, though a little freaked out about double day care costs. Yikes! I also hope my udders can supply enough boob juice.

  • Spontaneous here, too. I was shocked at first, but I think it sunk in after a couple days. (As much as it can, I don't know if it'll really sink in until they get here!) DH is actually a twin himself, but he's identical, whereas our doctors have been saying since the beginning that ours are fraternal. This is our first pregnancy and first children for both of us, so we won't know anything different.

I know it won't be easy, but we're very lucky that 1) we have a lot of family help nearby, and 2) we have the financial security and room in our house for twins. Also, though we won't be making any long-term final decisions just yet, chances are we'll be done having kids after these twins. Many people have remarked/joked that if we were sure we wanted two kids, it's an efficient way of doing things. ;)

Spontaneous g/g twins.  I was definitely shocked and spent my whole pregnancy feeling terrified that it was going to be miserable.  I am actually enjoying it a lot, though I do have those "oh my goodness, there are two babies" moments.  They are #3 and #4 for me, so I at least had knowledge from those two to turn to...though you really can never be totally prepared for twins!!
@CaliCarly77 I totally get what you mean by feeling gyped out of a pregnancy/experience.  I always wanted four kids, but with having twins, we made it to number four pretty quick (I am still under 30).  I am sad about stopping now, but don't want to have more kids.  I also felt like it is much harder to enjoy their individual babyhoods and that pregnancy was so awful I am sad I will never
    enjoy a pregnancy again.

  • My twins are also spontaneous- they are di/di- we won't know if they are identical or not until they are born, although the im pretty sure Di/di are more than not fraternal- we find out the sexes tomorrow. It was honestly the biggest shock of my life, I was kind of devastated ( but in a strange happy way) it honestly wasn't even a thought in my mind, I knew nothing about twins and just always thought If twins didn't run in your family there was no chance you would have them. I am excited and feel pretty special that I'm joining the elite club of twins.

  • Spontaneous B/G twins coming this spring. I was SHOCKED! I went though a super morbid period where I was making inappropriate jokes about one twin absorbing the other.

Now I'm so so so happy to have them both growing and doing well. It is surprising how much you can love them before they are even born. I can't wait to meet them!
  • Our mono/di girl twins were spontaneous, they are two months old now and it is incredible being their mom! Incredibly rewarding as well as incredibly exhausting. I have family history of fraternal twins on both sides of my family but I was informed identical twins do not run in families. DH and I were so surprised when we found out and even now with them in our arms we still joke that someone needs to pinch us!
  • Spontaneous fraternal twins. We just found out last week at our first appt. We just had a missed miscarrage in Oct. I was so worried about seeing a heartbeat i didn't notice two babies on the sonogram! We are definitely in shock, but feeling very blessed. We have no family history of twins. This is Baby #3 & #4 for us!
  • Spontaneous fraternal twins here, too. Total shocker, I wasn't expecting to get pregnant so quickly (we got married and "started trying" in February and got pregnant on the honeymoon) and the only family history was so far back my aunt who's into genealogy was the only one who knew there were ever twins on my mom's side.

I am so happy to have a son and daughter out of one pregnancy since it wasn't an easy one, but at the same time I'm a little sad I'll never again have the excitement of seeing another baby for the first time on U/S, hearing the heartbeat, and all of the wonderful things that do come along with pregnancy.

I'm also feeling guilty sometimes about not having a lot of one on one time with both babies, and not always being able to tend to their needs fast enough because there are two. This twin mom thing is tough for sure. It helps me to remember the saying that what you take for granted, someone else is praying for.

Yes - I am having all of those feelings about never being pregnant again, and its even making me consider having another baby.

Devastated is a good word!!! Yeah we didn't know if ours were identical or not until birth (it was very obvious they were NOT lol) Two of our friends have di/di identicals so we knew it was a possibility if they were the same sex! (we were team green!)

YES!!! I kind of want that experience of enjoying pregnancy! Though I know a lot of women who have singles don't enjoy the pregnancy so its a lame thing to mourn the loss of. And yes just looking through their photos over the past year has really tugged on me about how they had to share this babyhood (and everything!) with each other.

Well I am glad this thread was well taken - this rings true for me "It helps me to remember the saying that what you take for granted, someone else is praying for." because so many IVF moms in my twin club will remind you quickly that we are blessed and that many women with IF issues would pray for twins. But actually it really helped to know I am not alone in my (sometimes less than grateful) feelings here!!!

  • *Raises hand.

We found out at my 8 wk US that our let's try for #2 is actually 2 and 3. YIKES...
I didn't realize until after I was asked about family history that there are two sets in my family. One is never talked about bc the twin died early. My great uncle has a set of identical twins.
We have a special needs kiddo who is 6 and did not want her to be alone. I guess she's really not going to be alone now.
I'm 12 wks with di/di spontanious twins. Look to be fraternal.
Excited and scared all at the same time.
  • I'm 22w2d pregnant with spontaneous di/di boys. It was a huge surprise!! DH and I had joked about twins, and well, they are kicking me now. This is my second pregnancy-I had a miscarriage about 10 months ago at 8 weeks. We still cannot believe it sometimes!
  • We have spontaneous boys. I'm 17w2d. They implanted very close together, and their membrane has always been "thin for di/di, thick for mo/Di" at one point there was "definitely one placenta" but now there are "definitely two". I only have one CL cyst (that is still hanging around cuasing some pain) we have no idea if hey are identiclal or not.

I have two sets of spontaneous fraternal twins on my side, and two sets of IVF/clomid twins, also on my side.

I honestly was not shocked at all. We had talked about twins on our first date. This is a second marriage for both of us, and we both wanted two more "newborn phases" so the, what happens if the first newborn phase is twins convo came up. Every since then, we have always joked about having twins. I think it is completely crazy that we actually ended up with them.

  • We have 10 month old GG twins that were spontaneous, and just found out yesterday that I'm 5w1d with another set of spontaneous twins. I know it's super early, but I'm freaking out.
  • Congrats! Wow 2 sets of twins! I'm 7w2d and freaking out over my spontaneous twins. How did you handle the first set???
  • I have to say that they are very good babies! The first couple months are hard, but you figure it out! My girls were born at 37 weeks (full term for twins) so no NICU! The hospitals have changed, and mom is expected to do it all. My nurses were great though! I learned when 1 wakes to wake the other... Otherwise ZERO sleep for you. Now that we are past infant stage chasing them is crazy! I have one who loves to explore everything!
  • *Raises hand*  Hellooooooo!  Totally spontaneous here.  Tried for one more (DD is 4.5), ended up with 2 more!  I'm 13w1d.  Di/Di.  My sister has identical twin boys and apparently DH has a couple fraternal sets years and years back.  Never thought it would happen to us!

Still overcoming the shock and trying to figure out the logistics of it all!
  • Spontaneous b/g twins here! The are 19 months old. It was a shock to see them on the ultrasound. We didn't find out until 20w! It was hard in the begining, our DS was 22 months old when they were born, but they were/are very good babies!

  • Spontaneous identical girls here! I'm only 14 weeks along, but we're still trying to wrap our heads around it. It'll be babies #2 & 3 (our son is 25 months). I'm 37, which I know raises the odds of twins, and there are twins in my mom's side of the family. Totally caught us off guard--as somebody said above, it was the greatest surprise of my life! We laugh/cried with shock for about 2 days before we could start processing it (we found out at 8 wks). Found out they're identical at our 12 wk US, and then found out just yesterday at our 14 wk US that they are girls--which I thought was early, but the doctor was very, very certain!

Reading all of your stories above has been wonderful, and I'm starting to realize what a wonderful community that twin parents are. We're excited (although at times terrified) about this adventure!

  • Another one here! We were surprised to get pregnant at all then the twins were an extra shock :) (well to me, DH has been saying twins all along). I am 34 but no twins at all on my side- but DH has 4 sets on his side. We have been joking that we just really like to do things efficiently at our house! No more kiddos after these two. I had my first tri screening blood drawn last week so hoping to get the results back soon and find out the sexes then!
