Placenta Previa

Just diagnosed with placenta previa yesterday at 19 wks 5 days. Doc mentioned possible c-section. Has anyone had placenta previa early on then have it move and not need a c-section or will I need one no matter what? Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Placenta Previa

  • I received my diagnosis last week after a bleeding episode.  Right now your chances of needing c-section depend a lot on whether you have a low-lying placenta, marginal placenta previa or complete placenta previa and if you have a complete then the amount of overlap of the placenta and the cervix is really important.  If you have a low-lying or marginal then there is an incredibly good chance that your placenta will move sufficiently.  If you have a complete but the overlap is relatively small then there is still a chance that the placenta will move sufficiently out of the way.  If your placenta is completely centred over the cervix right now then there's a very high chance that you will need a c-section.

Have you been given any restrictions?

There's a thread on here for those of us with placenta previa.  I'll try to dig it up for you.

  • Thank you for responding. Honestly can't remember if she said complete or partial because I started to cry. I guess I should call her back with questions. I am on the no sex, exercise, lifting rescriction! Nothing else right now unless I bleed. Going back for another sono in about a month.
  • There have been a few posts about this lately as we're all getting to the point of our anatomy scans.  Here's a couple of thread recently.  Also, the search bar at the top will direct you to other posts as well.  Also, the high risk board might be a good place to go also.

  • I got diagnosed with a previa at 13 weeks. I'm awaiting my ultrasound on the 26th to see if it moved. Fingers crossed!

  • I found out today I made 18 weeks found out it's a boy and I have that previa thing but my doc said since its early it'll move because it's not fully covering and she's confident I won't have a c section she recommended the same no sex etc I'm still scared because my mom had two c sections me and my bro and the recovery stories sound painful ! So I know how you feel :/ hopefully it moved up for us
  • I also found out at 13 weeks. I had low fluid, placenta previa as well as a abruption. The doctor told me that most likely things would take a turn for the worst! But thank god, everything is looking much much better. Mine has moved as the baby has grown. I had a ultrasound every week for the past month to make sure everything was okay. I know a hand full of ladies with previa, an all of them have been vaginal births an full term. It's scary for sooo many reason, but you are gonna be okay :) the worst thing is a c section! An honestly, as long as everyone is healthy an okay, there's nothing wrong with a c section.

Just wondering whether your dr ordered another Ultrasound. At my last appointment I was told I had marginal placental previa and an ultrasound at 28 will check on the position again. I'm 22 weeks the Nurse didn't seem too concerned but I've read online how serious it can get. Are you scheduled for an Ultrasound soon?
