Diastisis Recti??

Whenever i slightly lift my head to look at my belly when im laying down, it creates a big bulge in the area right above my belly button... My mother in law told me this was Diastisis Recti. Is this something i should be concerned about? Tried doing some research on the internet.. Nothing has really helped. Any of you moms had this before? This is just a muscle thing, and safe for baby right?

Re: Diastisis Recti??

  • Hey!!! Yes I have that too! It looks like an alien about to tear out of my tummy! I work with plastic surgeons so I asked one and my OB both say it's just a muscle and SHOULD go back to normal after the little dude arrives. Fingers crossed it does! If not, a tummy tuck seems to be the only answer to get the muscles back to the way they were! Fingers crossed!!!

  • That makes me feel tons better! Just a completely normal (weird) muscle thing?? Nothing to change the pregnancy in any way??
  • We call it "the pyramid"

  • We call it "triangle baby". Lol. Nothing to be concerned about unless it's painful. You should avoid doing any abdominal exercise from here on in though, or so my prenatal yoga teacher said.
  • What you have is totally normal.  If I lean back I have the exact same bulge.  Diastisis Recti is a tear in your abdominal muscles that does not repair itself after birth.  It is something that you would need surgery to fix to repair the muscles.  https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/pregnancy-week-by-week/expert-answers/diastasis-recti/faq-20057825

  • There is some good info on this site https://fit2b.us/how-to-check-for-diastasis-hd/. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I have had an ab split with every one (some women don't get this split). It did not close up after my 1st, but doing the exercises on fit2b closed it up after my second. I let the exercises fall by the wayside and got a 3.5 finger width gap this pregnancy. By starting the exercises and watching my alignment in everyday life I have closed it to 2.5 fingers in 10 days. I care because the wider my gap gets the more my back hurts and the more constipated I get. Post-partum I am hoping to heal any remaining gap quickly so that I don't look pregnant forever and can get back to running without pain.

  • I have a dip in my stomach above and below my belly button like I did with my first. I had a bit of the separation which is normal for a few weeks after he was born, but at my 6 week check up, it was back to normal.
  • I've had three babies, and before this pregnancy I had a slight gap. One finger's width is not a big concern, which is what mine was, but I also have a slight umbilical hernia (and it used to be almost three fingers in width!). Nothing to worry about yet, but it's something to keep an eye on in case intestines are affected. I don't know how long after you give birth that you should be checking how big the gap is, so just do your research and ask your doctor. It should resolve itself after pregnancy though. I think I will try a belly wrap this time after I have the baby.
