Baby Names

If you have an Elise...

Does she get Elsie? I was reading comments on a site last night and people with the name said they were called Elsie a lot. Huge deterrent for me. The commets were almost 10 years old, though, so I'm hoping reading comprehension has improved since then.

Also, I pronounce it E-leez but saw it's supposed to be E-lease. Am i completely wrong?

Thanks.

  • My name is Elyse and I got Elsie a ton as a kid and still do from time to time. I feel like it is becoming more popular than when I was little, so maybe people won't mispronounce it as much?
  • I've always heard it uh-lease.

  • DD is Giana Elise (uh-lease). And the only person who thought it was Elsie has dyslexia and read her entire name as Gina Elsie when she was first born. Other than that we've had no problems.

  • This is my cousin's name. I think she got Elsie once or twice at the doctors office when she was a baby, but never since then to my knowledge. Also, we pronounce it A-lease (long "A" like in hay). Maybe if you say it fast it sounds like uh-lease, never a "z" sound though.

I've never heard an Elise get Elsie...and I've only heard it pronounced Uh-lease

Thanks everyone. I'm not french but I used to live in a french area and there are names Lyse and Lise that are more pronounced with a z sound so perhaps that's where I get it from. Not sure I can switch my way of saying it so maybe I'll have to steer clear.

Thanks for all your responses. Glad being called Elsie isn't too prominent.

  • We have friends with a little girl Elise. I usually say uh-lease but some say ee-lease. Never heard it with a z sound.
