Does being overweight hinder feeling the baby kick?

I'm only 18 weeks and I wasn't super worried until I started reading stuff. I see that you should feel 10 kicks in 2 hours. I don't know when that is supposed to start inn the second trimester but I feel one or 2 a day. I'm an overweight....well obese normally so will that hinder my feeling of the kicks and even seeing a bump. I have yet to see any difference but my pants being tight. My last OB visit, the baby was down in vagina/belly roll (for a lack of better term) but that is never were I feel the kicks. I don't want to call the dr again but I feel worried that I haven't felt too much or changed.

Re: Does being overweight hinder feeling the baby kick?

  • I'm 100 lbs overweight, prebaby (eek, I know) and feel inside baby kicks. Of course, I'm also a STM, so if this is your first, chill out.

  • They don't have you start kick counts until I believe around 22-26 weeks. You'll feel internal movement no matter how big or small you are. It's only the external feeling that is affected by weight. The more fat your body has, the stronger the baby has to be to feel that from the outside. Some people don't even start feeling movement until 20 weeks. It's nothing to worry about at this point.

  • I'm a FTM and 18w3d and also overweight. I haven't even felt internal kicks yet. Like PP said, kick counts are for much much later than we're at right now. Also as stated previously, being overweight won't affect feeling internal kicks, just what we can see and feel on the outside. Take a deep breath and stop worrying, your baby is just fine. :)

Ok. I gotta stop reading so much haha. I figured that would be more towards the end of the second or even the third. It's my first successful pregnancy and I'm constantly paranoid. I'm a worry wort to beginning with. I'm also 100 lbs overweight. I'm eating healthier now tho so I hope I can keep it going even after baby comes haha. Thank you so much!
  • I am almost 20 weeks and I haven't felt a thing yet (I am overweight too).  My OB told me it could be a few more weeks before I do, and that's totally normal.

  • I'm average size and I'm expecting twins- I haven't felt any internal kicks yet. ( I think I might have felt baby b kick the other night, but I'm not sure if it was a muscle twitch) don't worry and congrats on the pregnancy!
  • My OB told me not to expect to feel kicks for another month or so... around 20 weeks. Do you know if you have an anterior placenta? That usually will keep you from feeling anything until around the halfway mark (again, according to my OB---I'm a FTM).

  • Just to add, the position of your placenta could have something to do with it too. I found out yesterday i have an anterior placenta so i might not feel anything till 22 weeks. Wahhh
  • I'm overweight and have actually lost about 25 lbs so far. My clothes fit the same (or are even a little loose) and I can't really feel the baby yet, so I know how nerve wracking it can be! People just keep reminding me that it's ok to not feel anything for until 20 weeks or so. Just keep reminding yourself to be as healthy as possible and positive! I have a doctor's appointment today and am looking forward to seeing a healthy baby moving around!
  • I'm overweight and have been feeling LO for a few weeks. It's will be a few more weeks until DH will be able to feel him externally.

  • I am 19 weeks + 4 days and hardly feel my baby moving ever. I was considered overweight when I got pregnant (according to BMI I am 7lbs overweight, but I am starting this pregnancy 15lbs over what I did with baby #1) and I feel the baby way less this time then with my first two pregnancies. I think it has a lot to do with the extra weight. Or maybe I have an anterior placenta. I don't worry about it at all. I think every baby moves different. Baby #1 for me was a kicker. Baby #2 was a roller. This time I'm not sure yet, but baby #3 might just be a calm one.

  • You will feel the baby around the same time. Other ppl won't be able to feel the baby as early . that's it though. And as far as kicks.. They won't happen that often this soon. No need to worry.
  • Yeah.. 20 weeks here and am still not sure if I've EVER felt baby. No need to worry yet, like the ladies have said! I'm hoping to feel him (for sure) any day now.

  • I will be 19 weeks tomorrow and I have been feeling movement everyday since Friday :D \:D/ It will happen soon for you! I'm also a FTM, and a little overweight.

And ladies, please forgive that I still am rocking the December siggy challenge... I've only been able to be on mobile lately!

  • STM here and I just do not feel movement early. First pregnancy, movements started around 20 and frequent moves were maybe 24 weeks or later. I have yet to feel movements so far with this pregnancy. I'm overweight but I'm not sure if that is to blame or just my body doing its own thing. OP, don't worry. It'll be soon!

  • This is my 4th pregnancy, I'm 17w2d and still haven't felt anything.  IMO those apps and "what to expects" can be WAY off and just scare FTM's.  Also, if your doc has you do kick counts (some don't) that won't start until MUCH later.

  • You can also just have a calm baby. With ds I didn't feel him till 24 weeks and it was mostly hiccups, he was unusually calm in utero, he is not calm by any stretch of the imagination now. This baby I have felt a couple times over the past 2 weeks but it's been sporadic.

And this.  I have 3 kids (a set of twins in there) and the last baby I carried (as a surrogate) was more active than all 3 of mine combined by far.

  • With my first baby I started to feel movement after 20 weeks so I would not worry about it. With this pregnancy (with twins)I started to feel movement at 16 weeks but not every day. So don't worry about it.
  • FTM, overweight and 19w6d today - just starting to feel baby movement that I am CONFIDENT is the baby (not gas). Don't stress - you'll be able to feel baby eventually (don't bother with kick counts this early - your doc will advise you when they want you to keep track).
