Short femurs

i just had an ultrasound at 28 weeks to check my baby's growth since he was measuring in the 4th percentile at 22 weeks. Everything seemed to proportional except he has short femur bones, they are about 4 weeks behind of everything else. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Re: Short femurs

  • Yup! Dot was given an Aplus except femurs two standard deviations below norm, at 18w6d. I am having another ultrasound next week but they told me absolutely not to worry at all--most cases correct themselves and they didn't even think more testing would be needed unless another number was low too. They didn't even explain it to me--that's how little they thought it mattered--just it was on the report so I asked what it meant.

I seriously think he does have some short legs because I don't feel nearly as much kicking as some ladies here. Try not to worry and keep me posted!!

  • That's funny... I was told the opposite, that the baby's femurs were much longer than expected compared to the rest of the body. I'm chalking it up to that the baby will be long/tall... which I suppose would mean he/she takes after my husband's family, because tall I am not!

In the end, I'm not worrying too much about one measurement as we all have different body compositions and I suppose it would make sense for that to start in the womb.

Did the doctor seem concerned after this most recent ultrasound? Is baby growing well?

  • With my first it was that everything else was 90th percentile or above, but his femur was average. He is 2.75 yrs. old now and wears size 2T pants and 4T everything else. Absolutely no health problems, just very short legs!

  • My DD who is almost 5 had short femurs in utero. She came out 19 inches long. It's taken her awhile but she is finally caught up and at 3 months before her 5th birthday can wear a size 5 pant. At age 3 she was only 16th  percentile for height, at age 4 she was 19th percentile. I think she had a huge growth spurt this year and doesn't look any shorter than her peers.

    Try not to worry.

  • I have the opposite, but still having to have an extra scan for it. Little guy's femurs are two weeks ahead of the rest of him for two scans in a row now. Although I like seeing him, having ultrasounds beyond the "normal" two makes me a bit nervous- just for the fact that we've deviated from the routine care. Doc didn't seem worried at all, so I'm following their lead.

Hopefully your doc will give you some news that will alleviate the worry for you.
  • Thanks for the replies! He went from being 4th percentile at 22 weeks to 6th percentile at 28. So I know he's growing... Just a small a baby. Doctor didn't seem worried but he did refer me to a specialist for another ultrasound reading.
  • Ya opposite over here too. My DD had very long femurs and she is quite tall. She turned 2 at the end of October and wears 4T pants. You may just have a shortie in there! You'll get some more answers soon, but I'm sure there's nothing to worry about :)
