I have a pedi who also says it can be tried at 4 to 6 months.

My medical opinion is this... Recommendations are not one size fits all strategies. I agree that assessing tongue motion and ability to sit up is priority number one. Can I ask if there is a reason you want to introduce solids now @NavyFlyer‌ instead of at 6 months? In other words, is this something you feel like baby needs, or just something you want to explore out of curiosity? I'm not judging in any way, just wondering why you want to start now,

Sure! I'm EPing with inverted nipples. It gets pretty painful, because it is pretty impossible to get a good flange fit. Lots of plugged ducts and very sore nipples. Anyway I pump about 35 oz a day. I can't pump more often, and I can tell he is close to needing more than that every day. So I think the demand will soon outweigh the supply!!!! I have a freezer stash but only a weeks worth. I plan to keep pumping, Im not trying to get him off breastmilk. I'm planning to hang in there for a year pumping so he can keep getting milk. But Im maxed out on the pumping schedule.
This is just my opinion. You're the mom and know your baby. Based on this I would recommend supplementing with formula before going to baby food. It sounds like you are trying to make sure he gets enough food in general and not necessarily that he is showing signs that he is ready for something besides bm. Most babies have to get used to the texture of baby food and will refuse to eat it if they are not ready. They also still need the same or close to the same amount of milk that they would have been drinking without baby food as this is where their nutrition comes from at this age. I know supplementing can be a touchy subject. It sounds like you have discussed the options with your dr already but I just wanted to give you some ideas to think about when deciding what is best for lo.
Wow! 35 ounces is a lot. He is a chunky monkey. Good for you for working so hard to keep up to this point, but I can understand how you are maxed out. It sounds like you are concerned about not being able to provide enough nutrition @NavyFlyer‌, so I have to agree that maybe supplementing with formula might be in order regardless of whether you introduce baby food (as the baby food is usually just a few tablespoons per day and not very nutrient dense).

So I think there are two things at play here that might be worth discussing with the pedi.

    1) making sure that baby is getting enough nutrition.
    2) when to let baby explore solid foods.

You ultimately get to decide when baby starts solids, but it's important that you consider that nutritionally, they probably won't help much with filling the tummy or providing calories until closer to a year of age. All of that said, sounds like you are working super hard to provide for your little guy despite a demanding and challenging job. Rock on!
This, andplusalso the amount of breastmilk a baby takes usually doesn't increase much - the amount per feeding may, but with fewer feedings a day. Bm increases in calories per ounce as baby gets older. Baby shouldn't ever need more than 35 ounces a day (average range is 19-30 ounces; I would also ensure baby isn't being over fed from the bottle).
That's a nice thought, that he wouldnt be wanting more and more!! I thought he would! If 35 oz will.be enough for him for awhile then that changes a lot.

  • I thought that when you first introduce solids LO is not expected to get more than a few calories from it and that it does not in anyway replace milk, or to prohibit the baby from getting more milk if s/he needs it? Is that incorrect?
