GD Weekly Check In 1/11

Hey ladies! I didn't see this posted yet, so I thought I'd get it started.

When were you diagnosed?
What worked for you this week?
What didn't work for you?

GTKY: do you have an aversion/craving that sabotages your blood sugar levels?

Re: GD Weekly Check In 1/11

  • When were you diagnosed? I wasn't diagnosed in the typical way...I take meds that up my insulin resistance, so a month ago they sent me to the diabetes counselor. She gave me a monitor and had me check back in with her on Friday. According to my numbers, I do, indeed, have GD. But I didn't have to do the glucose tolence test. Yay?

What worked for you this week? Breakfast smoothies! My numbers were just spiking in the morning, so I switched from cereal to a smoothie of yogurt, coconut milk and almond butter.

What didn't work for you? The above mentioned cereal.

GTKY: do you have an aversion/craving that sabotages your blood sugar levels? I can't seem to tolerate straight up eggs during this pregnancy, which makes going out to breakfast a challenge. Today my only option for brunch was a yogurt parfait. The granola totally did me in :(

  • When were you diagnosed? Around 14 weeks.
What worked for you this week? Remembering to take my 3:30pm med dosage and routine.
What didn't work for you? Hunger pains in the middle of the night.

GTKY: do you have an aversion/craving that sabotages your blood sugar levels?
Most of the time I am not hungry at all when it comes time to have my bedtime snack. If I don't force something down it really affects my fasting level though. Lately I have been waking up at like 3am starving. This also affects my fasting level.

  • When were you diagnosed? Last Tuesday at 27 weeks

What worked for you this week? I guess I was pretty motivated after first finding out I had GD. That prompted a solid grocery run and meal prep. Plus, I've felt awful this entire pregnancy, so the hope of feeling better by changing my diet helped.

What didn't work for you this week? My food aversions. I hard boiled a ton of eggs, cracked the first one open, and started gagging.

GTKY Aversions/Cravings that sabotage blood sugar levels? When I'm not pregnant I eat very well, but like my last pregnancy, all I want are cupcakes and vats of icing. So, it's hard to ignore the cravings. It's also hard to force feed myself greens...although veggies are usually a favorite of mine, I struggle with them during pregnancy.

Question - I'm curious about those of you who have more experience with this than I do. Would anyone be willing to post their blood sugar numbers? Mine seem really low, all the time. Just curious if that's normal on a GD diet.

My fasting numbers are usually in the 70s or 80s. My after breakfast numbers are the ones I have to watch out for. Those usually go over 130 if I don't watch it, but since I switched to the smoothies, they've been between 90 and 110. Lunch and dinner numbers are usually in the 90s. I take metformin twice a day, so that obviously helps my numbers out.

Thanks for the response! I guess my numbers are pretty normal then. Although, my numbers after dinner are in the 100-115 range.

When were you diagnosed? Around 10 weeks

What worked for you this week? I found some Special K frozen flatbread breakfast sandwiches that are really good and have with my after breakfast numbers.

What didn't work for you this week? I made a homemade breakfast burrito that was below my carb limit for breakfast and my 1 hour number was sky high.

GTKY Aversions/Cravings that sabotage blood sugar levels? Cheesecake swirl brownies. I did make them this week though as mini muffins and froze them so I could enjoy one every once in awhile.

PP asked for numbers and my fasting numbers range from 75-95, breakfast 100-130, lunch 80-120 and dinner 90-130. Hope that helps :-)

Quick question-how can I keep from having my post as a large paragraph instead of the nice double space I have it in while it's in the draft stage? I'm using an iPad if that makes a difference.

I'm on an iPad and have the same issue :) you go up to the tool bar for the comment box and find the icon that looks like a white piece of paper with two red brackets (?). For me it is the next to last icon. Click on it. Insert your spacing for any existing comments ( if you want to edit your comment above, for example), or, if you're creating a new comment, just start typing. You can make sure it worked by clicking the icon again. The paragraphs should still be there in that view. Hope that helps!
  • When were you diagnosed? 26 weeks but didn't get into the counselor until 27 weeks--kinda a waste of time for me anyway

What worked for you this week? This was my first week taking my sugars. I noticed that I need a lower carb bfast than the counselor recommended to keep my sugars in check. And actually, I need lower carb everything to keep them in check by I try to keep my bfast around 30 carbs and it works for me. Other meals are anywhere from 45-55 carbs and I'm usually OK.

What didn't work for you? Honestly--following what the dietician said rather than using my own knowledge and how my body felt.

GTKY: do you have an aversion/craving that sabotages your blood sugar levels? Pasta will do it to me if I don't keep it in check. But I've been good. I had pasta twice. I kept it whole wheat and under a cup. I paired it with lots of protein and a veg and was OK.

My numbers for fasting are usually between 85-95

My 2 hour post meal range a bit more. For me, anywhere from 100-140. Huge range. The 140 was when I was using the dietician' plan for me which included way more carb than I was used to eating. I went back to what I was doing before and I range from 100-120 so right within what the doc wants. I was able to eat Chinese, pasta, and potato pancakes this week by pairing with protein and keeping the serving size in check. It's been OK.

  • QUESTION:
Is anyone else finding it difficult to get a good amount of blood to test? I've adjusted the lancet. It's at the deepest right now. I use the side of my finger as the nurse suggested. I run the area first to get the blood flow going. I also rotator fingers so I don't get callouses making it more difficult. There are days I have to triple prick.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • It looks like I'll be joining this check in going forward. I just got the call from the doctor that one of my readings from my 3 hour was high. I'm sure it's different for everyone and by doctors' office, but I was curious as to the frequency of perinatal appointments and or other appointments due to GD. Also, I think I read in another thread that someone is scheduled for c section at 39 weeks due to GD and high risk? Is it typical for doctors to recommend earlier delivery due to GD?

I'm sure I will get these answers when I talk to my doctor but wanted to ask in case anyone had any insight. This is my second baby, but first GD (potential) diagnosis. Although I am bummed by the diagnosis, I'm hoping that by managing my blood sugar I can reduce the risk of jaundice (which my first had).

  • My doctor has me scheduled for NST (non stress test) monitoring twice a week along with a weekly ultrasound at one of those appointments starting at 32 weeks. I was going to have to do that due to AMA and high BP anyway so it doesn't change my birth plan. I haven't seen the doc since diagnosis--just the nurse. I am seeing him this week so I will talk to him about early delivery then.

I have this problem as well...no suggestions, though.

I had the same issue before. Actually I gave up on certain fingers because they didn't produce enough. Your doing every thing I would suggest. I think you'll have to figure out which fingers work best for you and stick to those. For me, it was my ring and middle fingers on the sides. I always avoided my finger tips because I had a desk job and pricking there made working painful.
  • Welp today I was told I had +3 sugar in my urine, and that I need to go to a GD class....without even doing my 1 or 3 hr. Because I almost failed my 3 hr with my son, 6 years ago, they are just going to treat me like I have GD. Lovely.

I'm sorry. But it's really not that bad, and it seems to me like the tolerance tests are the worst part of the whole ordeal. I was in the same boat as you, and it turned out that I really do have it. Better safe than sorry!

Yea. I know its not that awful. I just wish they would have atleast given me the option of my 3 hr. I did eat waffles and syrup 2 hrs before my appointment so I feel like thats the reason my urine read that way. But, it is what it is. Better safe than sorry, as you said. :) Whats the GD class like? I have to do it Wednesday.

I didn't get sent to a class. I got sent to a counselor. One thing she did say, though, was that, even if a non-GD person ate an entire pecan pie, their numbers wouldn't go over the limit. Kind of frustrating, I know, but it helped me know that I was in the right place. I'm sure the class will just teach you how to use your monitor and how to manage carbs and sugar in your diet.
  • When were you diagnosed? I was diagnosed last week at 27 weeks. This is my second go around with this so it did not come as a surprise.

What worked for you this week? I took the class and got my monitor on Friday so it is a little early to tell what is working as what is not. I can tell you that the number of carbs that they recommend I eat sends my numbers through the roof. I have to severely limit my carbs to get a decent number. However, that is not good either because then i lose weight and spill ketones. My doctor is adding some medicine to my regime to see if that helps. Hopefully I will have a better update next week for what works.

What didn't work for you? The pizza I ate in frustration....

GTKY: do you have an aversion/craving that sabotages your blood sugar levels? Please see aforementioned pizza...

There were a couple questions asked above that I can lend my experience to.

39 week delivery? Yes, my doctors have already talked to me about delivering at 39 weeks via a RCS since I had a CS with my last one. I think they do it for a couple of reasons: baby's size and some other things they mentioned. I think they mainly do it because baby is full term and why continue the risk if you can safely deliver. With that said, I think it depends on if you have had a CS before or not as to whether they will offer this to you.

Weekly Appointment Schedule?  last time they started weekly NST and BPP appointments around week 34. These were separate appointments on different days so they could see me twice a week. I know every practice can differ though. We have not talked about the schedule for this go around. Just as added information, I am AMA as well so they like to sign me up for all of the fun treatments, lol.

Blood Sugar Numbers? These are by no means what your numbers should be. I was just diagnosed and they are trying to figure out what medicine is going to work for me. My fasting numbers are around 150 (yikes) and 2 hours after meals can range anywhere from breakfast being the highest 120 - 140 and dinner being the lowest at 90 - 120.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience, Pepperjack! I had a c section the first go around (induced 17 days after EDD and c section due to cord prolapse). My doctor was supportive of attempting a VBAC (although recommended against induction if I don't go into labor naturally). I suppose I'll have to talk to my next appointment to make sure that it still makes sense to attempt a VBAC or whether it is safer to do a RCS prior to my due date due to GD so that I can mentally prepare one way or the other.

  • Hey ladies, I have another question. This evening I ate grilled chicken, zucchini, and a sweet potato for dinner. Pretty healthy. Took my blood sugar 2 hours later and it was 138. I thought this was a little high, especially since my numbers had been pretty low all day. So, I immediately put in a new test strip and tried it again... With the same prick spot. It was 127. Curiosity got the best of me... Tested again, and it was 106. What gives? Something similar happened the other day. I got 168 which was crazy high, tested again and it was 118. Do I need a new monitor? Do blood sugar levels drop THAT quickly?

    @rowsdower85

I actually had a similar issue, i had higher than recommended levels for my 'fasting' measurements at 7.0 (normal is 5.0 and we have different measurement systems), i used another strip immediately and it was 7.8.
It's possible there was something on your fingers that didn't wash off however the endo seemed just as confused as i was as it happened on several occasions. She said to not pay occasional things like that too much attention unless it happens consistently. If you have any govt schemes giving away machines it might be worth grabbing another one just in case?

Did you get your monitor at a CVS, Walgreens or similar? If so, I would bring it back and say its malfunctioning and you need a new one. Most hold logs so I would show it to them so they can verify it.

  • Thanks for the responses. I got the monitor from Walgreens, my insurance covered the whole thing, and it's one of the fancier models... So I'm surprised it's malfunctioning. I'll go by there tomorrow and talk to them! Thanks again, ladies!
  • I would test the strips with the sugar dye that comes with it. Also, I wipe my finger with an alcohol strip before every test. It is very common to have residual stuff on your fingers that could throw off the test results. If that fails then I would try new strips or a new monitor.
