Chapped baby cheeks

So my little guy has some chapped winter cheeks and hands (we're in Minnesota, not surprised). Usually I like coconut oil or aquaphor, but at one of his pedi appointments the doc noticed a few red patches and asked me what I used on his skin. I said coconut oil and the doc said LO had a type of oily skin where oil-based moisturizer would aggravate his skin and that he needed water-based lotions. I've been using Cetaphil lotion and cream like crazy and see no improvement. Does anybody else have any experience with this type of skin?

For the record, I did stop using coconut oil on his skin and his red patches cleared up very quickly.

ETA:To clarify and to add that oil based moisturizers include ointments

  • We bought this Mustela stick - pretty pricey but it smells great and has really helped. And, we haven't really made a dent in it, so even though it's small, I think it will last a long time.

The stick form makes it really easy to apply often. I keep it by the nursing table so I can put it on after every time he feeds. Plus, Evan actually likes getting it on his face since it feels so good.

I may have even used it on myself after my nose got super chapped when I was sick.

  • I bought a babyganics stick that's for face and lips but it seemed too rough going on so now I use the babyganics skin protector stuff. I think it's for disper rash but it says on god package it can be used on the face too.
  • I always use aquaphor.

  • Thanks Ladies!  Like I said, my go to is usually coconut oil and Aquaphor, but aquaphor is oil based and causes flare-ups.

That chapped-cheek stick looked pretty good, but it's main ingredients are all oils :-(

Sorry, I don't mean to "shoot down" ideas, just trying to lead the ideas to a water based direction :-)

  • Sorry, I didn't realize aquaphor was oil based - I assumed it was water based because, you know, it has aqua in the name. I am a bad consumer.

  • Hazel gets chapped cheeks like crazy and we are also in mn. I always use aquaphor and it seems to help but maybe I'm making it worse. Don't want to totally derail this thread but how could they tell that oil based made it worse?

The way my pedi "diagnosed" him went like this.
Me: I wanted to ask you about this red, rough patch on his elbow...
Doc: What do you use on him after baths?
    Me: Coconut oil.
Doc: did he have cradle cap?
    Me: Yes, still does.
Doc: See these red patches in his armpits and by his neck? He has (I can't remember the name of specific condition), which means that his skin is already oily. You need to stop it with the coconut oil and use some plain J&J or Aveeno baby lotion which is water based.

I know what you're thinking: Why didn't I ask then what to use on chapped cheeks? Well, that was in August and not a problem at the time, and we moved states right after that. New pedi has never heard of coconut oil being a problem (she's a more natural remedy doc).

Meh, maybe he's grown out of it and I give that chapped cheek one a try.

Thanks for all of your suggestions!
