Nursery furniture

Has anyone gotten their nursery furniture or decided on what you want? I keep going back to the Pottery Barn Kids White Kendall crib and extra wide dresser. It's on sale too! We're going to look at Babies 'R Us tomorrow to see if there's anything there we like.

Re: Nursery furniture

  • We're only need to buy a crib. Everything else in the room will be furniture items that we already own, including the bureau and bookshelves that I used growing up, which will act as a changing table too. I've been looking at the Babyletto Modo crib. Hoping to check it out in person before buying it online, since the prices are better, but the closest place is over an hour from my house.

PB furnitures r nice but we couldn't bare on spending too much on nursery furniture... Since we don't know if LO will bite or draw on the furniture once she gets older.... We just got a graco crib and planning on a ikea dresser

I haven't bought anything yet, unless you count the copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting".

I haven't even bought maternity clothes.
U r so lucky not having to buy mat clothes yet!! I couldn't bare to wear my reg jeans since 11 wks
  • My SIL went all out with her first LO (5 years ago) and bought all her furniture from Babies R Us. She said everything but the ottoman fell apart, so she resorted to Craig's List for furniture for her second LO.

DH & I looked at Babies R Us, but think all their furniture is extremely over priced. We found similar nursery furniture at Target that we will probably buy. I want to wait until after we find out the sex and are able to finalize our vision/theme before buying any furniture.

  • Ugh, we haven't bought anything furniture wise.  It stresses me out every time someone mentions anything about it.

If money were no object, I would buy a crib from Restoration Hardware.  Anyone know where I can find a knockoff?

  • We're just moving my son's stuff into the nursery - so Graco Sarah Crib and Hemnes dresser.

Now if anyone has any recommendations for "big boy furniture" we're already looking around for that!

  • We'll be using a hand-me-down crib & dresser gifted to us from my cousin. (She's done having kids.) They are up to current regulations, in good condition, and the price is right! I have other friends offering us their changing table. Now I just need to find a perfect glider. Not in a rush though. Baby will be in our bedroom for the first few months. Although it would be nice to have that comfy glider now.

  • @Kiki119‌ I'm in the same boat - bought the book and that's all.
  • We are actually reusing DD baby furniture and getting daughter new furniture. The baby furniture is from Babies R Us and it's great quality. We thought about letting DD keep it and getting new stuff for baby, but decided to go the other way.

  • We went with cheap furniture for DS1 and I regret it. With this one, we will be buying a good quality convertible crib and dresser with sturdy drawers. It will be the last furniture set we buy him so we want it to be nice! I'm already looking at a new dresser for DS1 since the drawers crack every time we open them. :-/

  • We looked at the PB Kendall crib for a long time, but when we finally got to see it in person, we weren't sold. Ended up ordering the Stratton nursery furniture (Cherry finish) by Westwood Designs at BuyBuyBaby. We still need to get a rocker, but have been looking at a few different options. Our furniture won't come in for 8-10 weeks, so I suggest looking sooner rather than later. I was shocked that it would take that long to come in. Started our registries yesterday- that is a job and a half
  • We found a couple sets at Babies R Us that we loved but considering our budget we are opting to go with something cheaper. My mother is planning to help us get the DaVinci Kalani set from the nearby Navy Exchange, just slightly cheaper than Target's price.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • My sister got my niece's crib from target, it was cheaper online so she ordered. If you have the red card you get an additional 5% off and free shipping. Just a tip for anyone planning to make big purchases from Target
  • I was all set on a PBK dresser and crib until we checked out BRU where I found a set I liked better. Bonus - together they were the price of the PBK dresser alone. We are still splurging on the PBK comfort grand glider - it's the only one we've found that my tall husband feels is actually comfortable.
  • I think we'll be getting a crib and dresser set from Target. The extra 5% savings is worth it!

  • We don't need to change the nursery, but have been looking at beds and need curtains for what will be DS's new room ahhh. Every time I say that it seems so weird.
  • My husband said the PBK Kendall crib is well rated on consumer reports...We haven't started looking much yet but it's definitely one we'll check out!
  • Good call on the 5% off with your Target card. On another note, once you start buying things from BRU, you'll get coupons printed with your receipt. I was able to get 20% our crib and dresser by buying them separately with coupons!

  • I love the look of PB furniture but not the price. We chose a crib from million dollar baby and got the dresser on clearance for half off at Target. The crib is beautiful and I ordered it from diapers.com with a coupon code for less than $400 dollars! We haven't sent it up yet but the pieces are well made.

  • @bossybluejay‌ we bought the Kendall and love it. Bought a white IKEA dresser and they go well together. Very happy with the purchase. 400 dollar crib can last for more than 1 child and it comes with teeth guard.

I feel like there's so much to do and nothing I can do RIGHT now! I have been looking at cribs but I think we are going to go with a cheap (but safe and quality) crib. I've been in SO many nurseries and couldn't tell you what the cribs looked like. So we are looking at something kind of plain like the Dream On Me Classic 2-in-1 Convertible Crib in black. I will need a changing table, but not a dresser. So much to do!

We're waiting until we find out the sex of the baby. If its a boy, we're just going to re-use DS' Crib and Nursery Furniture since it's dark wood and I prefer that for a boy. If it's a girl I want white everything. So, we haven't decided if we'll buy new or just paint DS' old stuff.

  • I am hoping our 2 year old will transition out of his crib soon so that we can reuse it. It's the cheapest model at Ikea and its held up great and looks great. We love it. I did splurge on a naturpedic organic mattress for it so that is the big reason I don't want to buy a second set. I read a study a long time ago suggesting the mattress off gassing could contribute to SIDS. No idea is that is valid. Other than that we'll repurpose items from around the house. And buy or make some sort of screen to define the baby's area since they will share our master bedroom this time so big bro can keep his own space.

  • Since this baby will be in our room doe about a year, he will be in the bassinet/PNP for that time. After a year he will be in the white, girly crib DD is currently in. By that time, DD will have transitioned into her big girl bed. So all we really need to get is a dresser, which we will most likely get off CL. I've found so much quality furniture there for so cheap.

  • Is it a crazy idea to add nursery furniture to your registry? Not under the assumption that anyone would actually buy it for you, but for potential discounts from it being on your registry? Or do the discounts only apply to unpurchased items after you deliver the baby?

No this is a brilliant idea.  We did that - not the dresser because it was Ikea, but both the crib and the glider.  As a bonus, one of our friends ended up buying our crib.  Completely unexpected.

I'm not sure what all the talk is about getting the completion discount after you have the baby, every store I registered at gave you the discount after whatever shower date you put in.  They want you to buy for yourself whatever people don't buy for you.  Before the baby comes.

  • For DS1 we only had to buy a crib and a book shelf. We used my old dresser and my parents gave us a family rocking chair. As we don't want to update DS1's room and make too many changes for him, we bought new furniture for the baby. We bought another convertible crib and a matching dresser. My mom bought us the glider as a holiday gift, so all we need to get is the bedding and some décor. We aren't buying too much else new/gently used except a baby wrap and maybe a sit n' stand. We saved everything, and SIL is using it now, but will be done by the time DS2 arrives, so at least we are getting the money out of our items and the ones we got as gifts.

We are planning to move in a few years as we'll need a bigger house with 2 growing boys, and don't want to go overboard (price wise) on stuff for their rooms as things will probably change when we do move.

  • My plan is to get a white IKEA dresser to use as a changing table and this crib (https://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Mod-ParkLane-3-in-1-Baby-Convertible-Crib-Amber-and-White/5983290?type=shop-by-department) from Wal-Mart. I hate Wal-Mart, but I wanted this style, color, and something that is as eco-friendly as possible without having to rob a bank to pay for it. It was recommended by the bloggers from Young House Love, too.

  • I'm doing a vintage dresser that I will have refinished a cool cool and add new hardware that will double as a change table ( I'm not a fan of furniture sets). I haven't found any cribs I like but I'm very particular. Will probably wallpaper one wall and find a really cool light fixture and have some custom roman shades made and a really cool madeline weinrib rug. We are looking for a new house so it will depend on the side of the new baby room if I can get a good size little sofa instead of a glider.

We bought a Graco Lauren crib a while back and are picking it up this week.  Yesterday, a friend offered to sell us her used PBK Kendall for whatever we paid for the Graco.  (We can return the Graco.)

I'm a little torn--a used PBK or a brand new Graco?  I think I prefer the look of the Graco, but I'm assuming the PBK will be better quality.  (Though I've heard PBK outsources crib construction and slaps their brand on it.  I think Graco does the same thing.)

    Any insight is appreciated!

ETA: We bought our glider at BuyBuyBaby and used one of our 20% off coupons.  It's a Little Castle Serra and was comfortable both for my 6'4" husband and 5'4" self. HEADS UP, though: many of BBB's gliders are made to order and can take 16 weeks to get to you.  So, if you're looking to buy new, don't put it off until the last minute!

  • Can we talk mattresses while we are on the subject?? I have no clue where to start, all I know is that my girlfriends are telling me to make sure I get a SIDS safe mattress?? Any thoughts on this? Is there a different between getting a SIDS mattress or just a cover? Help!
  • Have any of you transitioned white furniture to childhood well? I'm starting to question wanting white - we painted the room a light gray and have dark hardwood floors, so white seems nice. I just don't know how well it would transition.

Awesome, thank you! I just remember for our wedding registry, Bed Bath & Beyond (and I think Target) offered something like 20% off unpurchased registry items, but only after the date of the wedding...which is why I wasn't sure if any companies had similar offers with their baby registries. Thank you for the input!

  • We went to Babies 'R Us today to look at nursery furniture & found a set that is less expensive than the PB Kendall and I like just as much. Plus, we won't have to pay 10% for shipping costs!

Where are some decently priced places to get a nice upholstered glider? Babies R Us is way overpriced, as is PB Kids.
  • We're getting the PB Kendell low profile crib. Love the simplicity of it.

  • FTM question, how necessary would you say a glider/rocker is?  The room we will have the baby in will also have a queen size bed in it and I don't know how much extra space we are going to have for things besides the crib and dresser/changing table.

I would say that at least having a comfortable chair in the room for nursing/feeding, and reading would be useful. I don't think you necessarily need a glider or a rocker.
