@nbad311
I hear you on the nervousness of an at home birth. I'm a health researcher-instructor (PhD candidate) at a uni and one of my colleagues actually specializes in the study of midwifery in Canada, so I had easy access to high quality info. I'm not sure I would have had the time to do thorough research about it on my own and I certainly wouldn't have done a home birth without looking into it first. The most recent studies in Canada (on the West coast) show the best outcomes for MW attended home birth in comparison to MW assisted hospital birth and GP assisted hospital birth. So, knowing that, it became a no brainer. The UK has similar findings in their huge and recent NHS study on the topic but I'm at a loss for the USA. My midwifery specialist friend is away for the next few weeks but when she gets back I'll ask her about the US in general and Georgia in particular. I'm curious now, too!
At every appointment I see one of my two midwives. So I see each of the two equally. They'll both come to my home visit. And yes, both will attend the home birth. It is actually legislated here that two trained MWs attend home births. I love the continuity of care I'm receiving (they'll even prioritize me for future pregnancies, so I'll have the same two MWs for all of my kids). And our appointments are 1hr long time blocks so I never leave feeling like I haven't had time to ask questions. I realize MWs aren't for everyone but I'm really happy with my choice. I'm really in favour of a low intervention birth, too, and my MW's practice has only had 3 hospital inductions in the past 2 years (out of hundreds of births) so it looks good!
Low intervention and drug free sounds pretty damn brave to me! Giving birth in any form sounds brave to me, tbh!
Who is attending your birth? Midwives, a general practitioner, or an OB?
Ps: half my family is American and I have family in Georgia but I've never visited! It is on my list!
You sound well-prepared then! Has your significant other been on board with the whole thing since the start, too? Did you or you two as a couple take any classes? We did an all-day Lamaze class which I think was helpful. I've also read the main nautral birth books and DH is reading the Birth Partner one. He has been so supportive and in this as a team which I am happy and thankful for! I will have a MW attend and deliver as long as everything is normal and everyone is healthy (which we both have been up to this point!), but I'm not sure who exactly, since the practice I go to has 6 of them on staff. At this point I have seen them all so they won't be a stranger at delivery, but I didn't really establish a relationship with any of them specifically like you have. I do have my favorites though that I hope I get on the big day!
butting in here but @SNail312 , I've found the "going natural" conversation can really go awry depending on who it's with! Most people are a little (or a lot) rude about it. "You're stupid for not getting an epidural" (MIL quote) So I learned early not to bring it up... even on the internet. Luckily, my mom had my brother and I naturally so she has been a good go-to for confidence boosts and support, and I also have another very good friend who had 3 babies naturally who is extremely helpful, so I haven't felt too alone. And good luck with your home visit next week!
My mother has mental illnesses that affect her ability to recognize reality. I'm honestly not sure she knows what I have planned (even though I have told her).
My father, who is usually very rational in his approach to things, seemed unconvinced by the empirical evidence and more swayed by emotionality regarding my decision for a home birth (you never know what side of the statistical curve you'll be on, kind of mentality). It really scares him! He's worried for both me and the baby and stats aren't going to alleviate that, unfortunately. I've since learned that MWs typically have all of the same equipment as a rural hospital, so maybe when I tell him that he'll be more reassured. My dad has cerebral palsy (which as we know is a set of disabilities caused by a birth injury restricting oxygen), so I'm sure that has something to do with his reservations. And, I had really awful health problems as a child (lungs collapsed more than once, etc) and I don't think parents ever really get over seeing their kid that sick, I know he still worries about my breathing (asks pretty regularly), so I'm sure that probably contributed to his reservations as well. I don't really bring the home birth thing up much, tbh, because I know it scares him.
As for the "natural birth" I don't know if my pregnancy\birthing experience would qualify. I'm pumped full of drugs for my lungs and allergies and my LO has even had pretty heavy painkillers while in utero because of my chronic injuries (although I've done my best to limit those drugs). Pharmaceuticals have saved my life more than once and continue to keep me alive so I'm not really in the "natural" camp, although I do have tonnes of respect for women who are! I'm pretty sure babies born to moms with epidurals and c-sections will probably have had less pharmaceutical exposure than my little guy will have had, lol.
@nbad311 We've been reading tonnes of books, too. But we haven't done a birthing class and won't be doing one. I have panic attacks and I'm afraid if I go to a birthing class women will begin sharing horror stories and I'll have a panic attack. I'd love to be able to do a class and feel safe there but it isn't possible for me right now.
I haven't started reading it yet, but hypno birthing was recommended to me, and I plan to dive into some of that literature next week.
That's great that your DH is so supportive! Mine is starting to take much more of an interest in his support role. I think I'll steer him towards the same book!

we keep our heat set to 59 o/n on the regular.... our normal daytime in the house temp is 66, and I think it is too warm sometimes and am still using capris as pj bottoms.
My kid is currently reading Christmas books we haven't put away yet. She is more obsessed with santa now than during the Christmas season. She doesn't talk very well so she says "sah sasth" and she keeps saying it over and over lol.
@ChickenOnSunday team water broke in bed. But I was able to jump up in time. I put down a huge plastic bag under the sheets on my side so I'm prepared! Cheap and easy -like your momma... just kidding (couldn't resist) \:D/

It's been in the 40's outside but our house hasn't been getting warmer than 59 lately. Our house was built in the 50's so the insulation isn't great. And all the rooms have huge windows. The girls have 2 huge windows. I'm just glad he finally got it working!!
Stupid pregnancy hormones. Just had a total sob fest on the phone with DH because I am stressed out with my boss. I just want to give up on this day, eat some chocolate and watch a movie. But I can't... becuase now I have to redesign an entire project because said boss "changed his mind". Grrrrrr.
@chickenonsunday, my water broke with our 1st LO to get things started and I felt/heard the popping suction feeling/sound so I hopped out of bed and made it to the potty before anything really leaked out. I worry that this time I'll have a flood too but I plan on putting a towel down once we get a little closer. Of my last 10 friends that have had children none have had their water break prior to labor starting so I believe the tiny 10% info that's out there.
I'm so pumped for the Panthers/Seahawks game tomorrow I'm practically dancing in my chair every time I think about it! We're having a few people over but I'm just excited to see the game! All my friends and family back in WA have been trash talking all week. I'd love for the Panthers to pull out the W but I'm just stoked that my two fav teams are playing!
@dreemkin84 I'm laughing at my desk like a crazy person at the cheap and easy comment.
I just ate a foot long sub and the bag of chips. I'm feeling a little guilty since it was a cold cut combo and I choose to steer clear of deli meats during pregnancy. I just wanted it soooo bad.
Water, water everywhere! While changing the valves on the well tanks there was an excessive amount of pressure sent into the house. Pressure relief valves were triggered on everything from the water heater to the water softner and faucets. There is currently about 3 inches of water covering my storage room floor and it is creeping toward all of the keepsake boxes from my first 2 kids. The boxes are all too heavy for me to move and my husband is out of town. This mama is on the verge of a complete meltdown :-(
"I thought I had put on...like some Christmas season weight, you know, but I never thought I was pregnant. never." Wtf?
Here I am, almost 36 weeks and I feel like crap due to a bad two week cold on top of the normal increasing prego discomforts...I WISH I could say I didn't feel pregnant. Geesh!
My work brain is officially dead. I still have one week left before mat leave starts, but my brain is already on the couch. I just can't concentrate on anything. I've already handed my clients off. The projects I'm working on are very small and I really just want to put my head down on the desk. No idea how I'll get through the next week.

I just do not get how they can NOT know. Maybe for the first 4-5 months.. but the minute little one starts moving? What do you think? Its gas? Like I totally don't get it.

TL;DR: Everyone running late makes me annoyed (and late as well). Hospital is prohibiting visitors under 18 due to flu - DS won't be able to visit after I deliver DD.
I had an annoying morning: I had an 8:30 OB checkup, so I scheduled a babysitter to arrive at 8 am. She is almost 10 minutes late, again. I think she has only been on time 2-3 times I've used her. Previously it wasn't a big deal as I was using her as more of a mother's helper to watch DS while I got some cleaning and cooking done, or going out to run errands. But when it takes me almost 20 min to get to the dr office, being late is a big deal. Grr. Then after my quick appointment I went over to the birthing center (my OB's office is in one of the hospital medical buildings) to look into pre-registering. (Two years ago they had a paper form to fill out at the desk) After the desk guy calls various different departments he gives me the number for the scheduling department, who inform me that I need to do it online. Plus, the hospital director(?) just announced that due to a bad flu going around visitors under age 18 will not be permitted. So that means DS won't be able to visit me or DD while I'm there for 2-3 days after delivery. Cue hormonal overreaction of almost crying on the drive home. Once home I was planning on taking DS to my IL's for a sleepover so DH and I could get a day and a half off. (we meet halfway and transfer DS and stuff between cars) Well, they are running late too. Almost an hour later I decide to give DS lunch, and that's when they call to say they are on the road. 8-|
At least DS is now with his grandparents, I'm home sitting on the couch with my feet up. Looking forward to a good dinner out with DH and a full night's sleep w/o toddler interruptions.
@amack22 they had ours in stock. We got a graco system. I think if it's a fancier system the odds are less likely.
They had ours in stock. After our preterm labor scare and I was stuck on bed rest I made hubby man go get it. We just had our car seat check yesterday and it was so helpful. We had it in there for the most part right but we were putting the belt on slightly wrong.
winterbabe2015 oh noooooo! I hate how this kind of stuff always happens when you're alone! Can you lift them enough to put some plastic around the bottom or are the boxes all piled up? Keep calm and mop mop mop
I used my pregnancy meltdown card and called my husband :-) He called his best friend to come over and move everything out of the way and is going to get the water cleaned up and everything dried out. We still have 100 psi of water pressure coming into the house. ..the poor plumbers just received the ass chewing of a lifetime though. Sad part is I'm not even sorry about it ;-)
So I made a HUGE mistake and signed up to get updates about a new Orange Theory fitness center opening soon in my town (https://www.orangetheoryfitness.com/). I've heard good things about them and the concept seems cool, but obviously this would be in the spring or likely summer of next year after all the baby stuff gets settled. ANYWAY, now this bitch is seriously blowing up my email. multiple times a week. Right after I signed up for news updates, this lady emails me, trying to get me to come in ASAP and sign up (the place isn't even open yet????) and I emailed back:
"Thanks Brittany.
I have heard good things about Orange Theory and am excited to see you have
come to ___my town___, however I am currently 7 months pregnant and won't
be looking to start any new exercise/gym routine until June or July 2015 at the
earliest. I guess I was just interested in staying in the loop with your
opening/news, for when I may be ready to get back to work!
I'll keep you guys on my radar heading into next Spring.
Thanks, nbad "
Now I get emails like this consistently:
"Hi nbad,
I just wanted to follow up with you regarding your inquiry
here with us at Orangetheory Fitness, YourTown USA! Did you receive my
last email?
Would tomorrow or Monday work best for you to swing by for

I've simply ignored her last 600 emails but now I kind of want to get pregnant cranky on her and write back and let her know I'M NOT JOINING YOUR F'ING GYM AT THIS TIME. Should I just let it go? I just don't get why she keeps poking the bear........ she knows I'm pregnant and not interested!
@maasybaby I totally feel your pain. The Monday before Thanksgiving some assholes went around the townhomes near us with a BB gun and shot out the back windows of peoples cars. They got mine and I found out at 7:00 am when I had to leave for work. Totally sucks and of course since it wasn't the front windshield insurance didn't cover it
Well it's been a friday like no other. My DH calls me this morning to tell me he's been in a accident on his way to work. Good ole MI winter. Roads were bad. He's ok but pretty shooken up. Car is basically a goner. He just kept saying thank god you weren't in the car or what if you were in the car! Passanger side is basically gone. But I told him I wasn't and that someone was defiantly watching over him. Sad thing is, is we just picked up my car from the shop cause someone hit me in a parking lot. Needless to say it's been a long day. But it'll be better. I hope everyone who is having a rough friday that it'll get better.
There is a crib on my front porch. It's a massive box that ups dropped off today. Unfortunately, H asked me not to lift if (which he's probably right about). So DD and myself have just been looking out the window at it all day. I want to see it, darn it!
@chickenonsunday I had my water break in the bed with my first, but it did not ruin the mattress. I felt it gush and jumped up. I probably should have a waterproof pad, but I don't really think about it too often.
I am so glad it is Friday. Exam time kicks my butt! I haven't had to give the exams because I am so far along in this pregnancy, but I have been helping out with the testing office in our school and that is super stressful. Everyone is grumpy and stressed and that takes a toll on me.
My DH took my daughter to see Into the Woods, so the house is quiet right now since my son is gone to his Tae Kwon Do class tonight. I am enjoying the alone time.
I hope all you ladies have a restful weekend. We are getting so close, so we all need some rest.
I had a cry and made myself crepes with clotted cream and jam for dinner. I was surprised at how easy the crepes were. I don't like how ridiculous I am about DH being off island this weekend and pictures with the nephew. I need a hug and won't be able to get one for a day or so.
My TGIF spam: DH and I filled up the weekend with mini dates! I'm really looking forward to it! Tonight we are going to my college (just down the road from us) to watch a mens basketball game, and the opponent is his college! But not before stopping for Indian food. Tomorrow he is playing in a golf tournament and I'm having lunch with a friend, then we're going to trivia later in the evening at a cool place! We can't decide if we want to invite friends or not, or if we want it to be just the two of us. Sunday we're going to a Hawks basketball game! They have a 3-point shorter (Kyle Korver) that DH has a huge HUGE mancrush on. He hit a few 3's in a row the other night and DH was up and down off the couch, hooting and hollering with excitement. I'm going to go out at lunch today and see if I can find him a Korver shirt/jersey to wear to the game
This sounds like such an awesome weekend yall have planned! DH and I went to a hawks game a couple weekends ago, we had a blast!
@Xoxolicia - I showered last time after my water broke... but I hate to tell you, things are gonna get way, way worse up in there quickly and there's nothing you can do about it. Plus side - I'm pretty sure most women usually are beyond the point of caring at that point. (At least I was.)
@Xoxolicia my mil who is an rn said that you can take a quick shower when your water breaks. i desperately wanted to, to shave my legs, with my first but my DH wouldn't let me. And really, I didn't care long with all the excitement going on.

My OB tells me by 36 weeks and on the fluid is primarily fetal urine.
Hey Ladies, sorry I've been MIA. My grandmother passed on Wednesday after a long battle with dementia. It's been a busy week as we were very close to her. I'll try and catch up next week! All the birth new announcements are exciting! So happy for you ladies and healthy LO's.
@Xoxolicia im the same way and plan to shower/shave before. I know ppl say "you won't care" but I will...ill be shocked if thats true for me..ughh lol

I cared, but I hadn't started active labor yet. I also did my makeup and curled my hair for fun. And we went to Starbucks on the way to the hospital. After they checked me in, one of the nurses told me, "we usually think the girls who come in here with starbucks are funny because they're not in labor."
Leaving for the Aziz Ansari show in 2 hours. Guise, I'm dying with excitement!
More family flying in tomorrow, 1st of my weekly appointments on Monday morning along with the start of weekly NST's and a zoo trip with my mum and DS. SUPER excited.
My shower is next weekend, too. I can't wait to AW the shit out of it

I could care less about my legs. I just don't want to be smelly. I imagine that the water would start to smell weird after a while. But I could be wrong. It makes sense in my head. lol
No smell that I noticed and I was given the ok by my mw to shower as long as my water was "clear" as broke. I was so excited I didn't care much about upkeep down there though I'm considering getting waxed so I don't have to worry about it post partum.
I love my mil! DH is at the hockey game with a friend of ours (his fiancé broke up with him 2 days after Christmas) & she brought me a Dr Pepper and Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies! Now im watching movies and eating cookies. Oh and she took all my laundry to wash too!! I ❤️ Her! We get along soooo much better after we moved.
