opinions on flu shot?

Hey ladies im just short of 30 weeks and up until this point i was against getting the flu shot (personal reasons). I was required to get one for my upcoming CNA course and so i wemt ahead and got it. My mother whos an RN freaked when i told her that i got it. To my knowledge it is recommended that pregnant women get the shot, am i mistaken? All most all the women being seen in my OB clinic (women ive talked to anyway) have gotten the shot. Guess im just freaking a little any soothing advice would be nice.

  • Obviously i know no one is a doctor i was asking for personal opinion. That is it but thanks for the response, very nice
  • Another RN here, all I can say is WTF to your mom's reaction and you know the answer to your question, if you were that concerned beforehand you should have researched or talked to your OB.

  • @xenamom123‌ What a day to choose to blast us with ignorance. My personal opinion is that you don't spend enough time here to care about us so I don't give a rat's ass about your "worries" either.

  • My Dr. said get it before the start of the heavy flu season (January) because a pregnant woman's immunity is as good as an 80 year old's. I was nervous about getting it because I have been reading too much crap online about vaccine side effects even when given to the mother, but I got it anyway. He said the vaccine this year isn't an exact match for the virus, which we all knew, but might as well take extra precautions. No side effects have happened to me...and in all honesty, if anything is wrong with baby, we all know correlation is not causation. I honestly think it's all okay. For a CNA environment or any medical environment you would probably be better off having it anyway,
  • We've talked about this topic a lot..... Use the search. Or call your doc.
  • It's a sad day when even I don't feel up for debating this one.

Yeah, I don't have any fucks left to give. Ya'll wore me out!

  • I got mine. While pregnant. Husband got his. Everyone I work with got one (I work in healthcare, we have 3 doctors, 1 RN, 1 LPN, 2 CMAs and 3 administrative staff) and all their kids got one ( a total of over 20 kids in all, ranging in age from 2 yrs to 18 years this year). We all survived. No issues. No major side effects. We haven't caught flu despite seeing multiple cases a day. But my opinion doesn't matter. I'd rather you ask your doctor.
  • I got the flu shot months ago. Everyone who will be in close contact with LO got the flu shot. We're all alive and healthy. I don't see the problem. Shouldn't this have been a concern of yours back in, like, October?

  • I chose not to get the flu shot. I've never gotten the flu before, so didn't see the need to get the vaccine this year (since I've never gotten the vaccine before either). Like others have said, it's a personal choice.

    But...but...but....logic...uhhhhhh...
  • Where's a zombie flu thread when you need one? I'm too tired for this shit.

Yes, because the last trimester certainly doesn't ravage your immune system and reduce you to the status of an 80 year old.

Internet stranger, I refuse to believe that you are honestly too stupid to grasp the concept that pregnancy compromises your immune system. I really do. It's something a 4 year old would find easy, so I think your ability to log onto a computer proves you are at least as intelligent as a 4 year old.

Not to mention the fact that your lungs will be squashed to hell by your growing baby and can't function optimally even if you're 100% healthy (so imagine what will happen if you have you have a virulent upper respiratory infection) , and the fact that the flu shot will protect your newborn who will be getting lots of germs and visitors in March which is still very active for flu cases. Or if they come early in February, which is the #1 most frequent peak month of flu season (peak in 50% of the last 30 years per the CDC).

  • Just to add, for those concerned about Thimerosal (mercury) it is NOT present in the single dose vials of flu shot. Only the multi-use vials. All you have to do is call the pharmacy and make sure they have single dose shots on hand and you are good to go.

  • The Thimerosal argument makes my head want to explode.

FTR, my DH coaches Highschool basketball. His entire team, including the head coach got laid out by the flu before Christmas. DH and DD had the sniffles and a cough, and I escaped with pretty much nothing. All three of us got the flu shot this year. No brainer.

  • Did she just come out of nowhere with that gem? Will she vanish back into the bushes?

Why the fuck do these people only come out to say stupid shit?
  • It's asinine to not get the flu shot, I wish to hell that I could get one to protect my daughter. Unfortunately I'm highly allergic to it, and no one in my state thought it would be worth it to get the non egg version. So, I'm left to rely on herd immunity, and people that don't get the shot make it dangerous for us. My older kids and H sure got the freaking thing, the flu could also easily kill my son.

My father is the only one who didn't get the flu shot. Can't say I blame him... it makes him break out in severe hives. But he's not allergic to eggs :-/

I was scared to get it because whatever he's allergic to or has a reaction to, I've followed in his footsteps. Thankfully, I put the worries aside and ended up with no adverse reactions. Whew!

Glad you still got the family hooked up!

  • In England all pregnant ladies are told to get a flu shot and whooping cough injection - no exception. We have a baby to protect.

Do they offer the nasal spray option by you? My son has to get that version, because the injections give him a mild reaction, and they don't want it to progressively get worse each year. (His whole outer arm from the elbow up turns bright pink, warm, and is sensitive for about 2 days)

My doctor told me to get it, plus I work in a hospital and we are required to get it so I really had no choice unless I wanted to be fired. I think it's ignorant not to get it. The flu could seriously harm you and your baby. I want to take all prevention possible from getting sick while pregnant. Not getting the shot is what you should be concerned with. I'm a nurse too and do not agree with your mother. Sure, the shot may not be effective 100%, but it's better to take any preventive measures as possible, besides the shot is not harmful. It's more critical for a pregnant woman to get it than anyone else.
  • We aren't supposed to get the FluMist (nasal spray) because the virus is live.

Not sure if your OB would say the benefits outweigh the risk.

  • Good to know; I honestly had no clue that the flu mist was off limits for pregnant women.

  • OP, get the flu shot. I work in healthcare and the flu this year is nothing to screw around with. The shot protects against 4 strains of the virus, so even if you miss the first strain, you're protected against 3 other ones likely this season. Every healthcare provider I know of is required to have it and I'm grateful for that. I would raise 50 kinds of hell if one of the healthcare providers treating me wasn't vaccinated. I've never had the flu in my life and don't plan on getting it at my (and LO's) most vulnerable.
