Ok, I have to admit, I created this so I could ask a shower question X_X and I didn't want to create a whole new thread on something we all thought was an obsolete concern... when planning my own shower... BAHAHA no just kidding!
My friends have planned a shower for me this weekend and, with the addition of the upcoming LO and finishing up our nursery and what not DH and I are a bit cash strapped (especially trying to save for my 4 weeks of getting paid only 70%). I'm trying to find some easy DIY gifts for my hosts and I've come across a few on Pintrest (homemade body butter, bath salts, hand scrub)... I guess my question is:
a) which one sounds the best (I could also throw in a nail file and some nail polish to make it a "beauty kit")
b) does this seem tacky/too cheap
All advise is appreciated (hoping I didn't set myself up for a flame-throwing marathon this morning!)

@wirtlehm I love the idea of the beauty kit. That's what I did for my bridesmaids a couple of years ago and it was a huge hit. A few of them were even asking for the recipes after they ran out bc they loved them so much.
My spam for the day: Today is my first official day as a SAHW/ soon to be mom. It feels so good to know that I don't have to go back to work this morning. I also have my 36week appointment and my breast feeding class today. I'm pretty excited for the class. I'm a FTM and pretty nervous about BFing, so hopefully this will give me some great info and a relationship with my lactation consultant.
Stay warm out there ladies! It's a very chilly 26 but feels like 17 here in East Tn. I personally am enjoying the cold snap with my built in baby oven cooking
@hollydenton, jealous of your new found SAHM/W status! I agree, it's a good time right now to educate yourself on some of your FTM fears/concerns/questions BEFORE baby comes

My TGIF spam: DH and I filled up the weekend with mini dates! I'm really looking forward to it! Tonight we are going to my college (just down the road from us) to watch a mens basketball game, and the opponent is his college! But not before stopping for Indian food. Tomorrow he is playing in a golf tournament and I'm having lunch with a friend, then we're going to trivia later in the evening at a cool place! We can't decide if we want to invite friends or not, or if we want it to be just the two of us. Sunday we're going to a Hawks basketball game! They have a 3-point shorter (Kyle Korver) that DH has a huge HUGE mancrush on. He hit a few 3's in a row the other night and DH was up and down off the couch, hooting and hollering with excitement. I'm going to go out at lunch today and see if I can find him a Korver shirt/jersey to wear to the game
crazy snow here right now. Forecast says will be gone by 9 am, but timed perfectly to foul up traffic. Working at home till 10 and roads look better. It was almost white out when I got up this morning, and DH left before there was accumulation on my car, so I'll have to clean it myself. Poor me
I got some awesome news back at work yesterday. I'm a fundraiser and a campaign I was working on came in WAY over target, which is going to make my goals for 2015 super easy to hit. Got the news yesterday and everyone was joking that I should just leave for maternity leave now. Getting kudos emails from higher ups in the department the money goes to. Woop woop.
@chickenonsunday , I actually bought a cheap waterproof mattress protector/cover last weekend and put it on our bed, due to lots of thoughts I was having concerning my mattress's well-being....... like, what if my water breaks in my sleep? Will my breasts leak PP like crazy and milk the bed all night? could my PP bleeding be so much that it escapes my adult diapers at night? My mattress wants no part of any of these!
Sooooooo Nessey just posted that baby is coming after the gush of her water breaking. I don't want a gush happening in my house. Isn't it a super small percentage of women whom actually have their water break w/o intervention by the doctor?
I'm wondering if I should steal one of the water proof mattress protectors from my kid's crib an put it under my bed sheet.
My birthing class said like 10%. But I've also read a mattress protector is a good idea too because baby might throw up/pee/poop, ect while in bed with you, even if not cosleeping.
@ChickenOnSunday Yes! My water broke in bed. I did have something under the sheets just in case. I rolled out of bed pretty fast so it didn't get on the sheets but better safe than sorry.
My spam...I'm pissed off today. Tomorrow is supposed to be my family Christmas bc this day worked for everyone. Well now my sister and her kids aren't coming bc they have lice. I hate having my plans ruined or cancelled (this happened last year too). Obviously I don't want lice in my house so I know it's for the best but #%**^^ &@$?*%

Team no lice. Off to go check my hair just because it was mentioned. Bleh.
Im right there with you @chickenonsunday my head is itching just thinking about it. Lice give me the heebijees
@mishka29 That sucks about xmas. Are you orthodox or are you celebrating late? Either way, it is always a drag to have plans ruined, but more so when they're big once a war plans. Sorry.
That said, I'm terrified of my kid getting lice! Eww! I've heard that they're super live nowadays that aren't affected by the insecticides currently available on the market. Ewww

I'm such a bitch, I had a girl living with me and her kids got lice and I ended up telling them they had to go...
It wasn't just the lice, she worked long hours and DH and I had to take care of her kids and therefore WE were the ones saddled w checking her kids heads every day and keeping up w all the sheets and stuff... it just got to be overwhelming for us, particularly since they weren't ours...
The second time I found a live one in her daughters hair after 3 weeks of treatment and daily head checks I literally had a meltdown, drove to my parents, stripped naked in their kitchen, told them to "throw that shit in the dryer" and hopped in their shower... They moved out the next day...

I had my midwifery appointment yesterday. Next one is my home visit. Shit is getting real!
My DH got me in "trouble" again. He told on me for trying to measure my own fundal height over xmas and getting freaked out by being "14 ahead"! I only did it because I was away for 3 weeks and everyone was saying I was too huge to have the due date I had so I started freaking out about whether I'd given myself GD by eating too much xmas chocolate and down the rabbit hole I went. My midwife and DH got a good laugh at it as I measured entirely wrong. I actually measure exactly where I should be. Lol
We also established that my baby's legs are probably fine and that I need to stop worrying! Lol.
@ChickenOnSunday My doc said between 10-15% of women have their water break before labor. And if it's happened with a previous pregnancy, it goes up to about 20-30%. So still fairly low. I'm so afraid mine is going to break in the shower and I'll have no idea.
Hiya @nbad311
I'm actually not sure if I ever did say this on the bump or not.
But, you guessed correctly: yes, I am doing a home birth (as long as everything stays as planned).
Are you doing a home birth, too?
I'm a FTM, so this is all new to me. I've got 2 amazing midwives though.
No, we will be in the hospital but we're planning to do low-interventions and drug-free. I'm a FTM too and I'm not brave enough to be at home for my first! (I also didn't feel like I had done enough research on it). I also think the state I live in (Georgia) is really home-birth UN-friendly... like you have to jump through hoops and there are some legal limitations, or something. Again, I would need to look way more into it. If you don't mind my asking, do you see the same two midwives for all your visits? Will they both be in attendance for the birth?
@ChickenonSunday - I heard 10%, but it sure seems to be a lot more than that based on anecdotal "evidence" (I know anecdotal evidence is not the same as real evidence..) Mine broke in bed with DS and I had a crib mattress pad underneath me so the small amount that came out prior to me jumping out of bed did not get on our mattress. I just had one of the cheap ones from BRU but it did the trick for that as well as any baby-related leaks (diapers, spitup, etc).
My spam - we have a half day at school today. Normally this means the afternoon is filled with fun and exciting faculty meetings, but today we can leave at noon. DH is still on break but DS is going to daycare so we're going out for what will probably be our last kid-free meal for quite a while. Sushi, yum! I'm irrationally excited about this.
We go together like a wink and a smile. June 27, 2009
@ChickenOnSunday I always thought that having your water gush when it broke was normal since it happened with my mom for all four kids. It wasn't until I got pregnant that I found out that is not the case and my mom is just a freak. I'm putting a mattress protector down because the odds are not in my favor.
We had a rough night last night. I woke up in the middle of the night having a full on anxiety attacks. My chest hurt and I couldn't breathe and I probably should have gone to the hospital, but instead I just tried to calm myself down and go back to sleep. Well this morning, Little Man wasn't moving around as much (he's normally very active in the morning and per my midwife, I do my kick counts when I wake up). This morning he was kicking, but I couldn't get to ten in an hour because he would just stop moving for long periods of time. I allowed myself one freak out call to the emergency line for my doctor. Naturally, after I called, I got all 10 kicks right in a row. He's still not moving as much as usual, but the more I calm down from last night's attack, the more he moves. Now I feel bad for bothering my doctor.
Hopefully this weekend we will be finishing the nursery. On sunday I will be 37 weeks...officially freaking out! I'm excited but very nervous! So excited for the Hawks game tomorrow!! We're gonna veg out on some Mexican food
Hhhhmmm not a good start to the day here! Luckily nothing baby related but still...
Came downstairs to find that someone had slashed all four of my car tires. I called the roadside assistance, they don't cover if it it's more than one tire, so I had to get a towing company to the garage. Then I had to get new tires... total damage is about $700. You can probably imagine that we really would have liked to spend that money on something else right about now!!!
I am so angry for you. Sometimes I really hate people.
@nbad311 I hear you on the nervousness of an at home birth. I'm a health researcher-instructor (PhD candidate) at a uni and one of my colleagues actually specializes in the study of midwifery in Canada, so I had easy access to high quality info. I'm not sure I would have had the time to do thorough research about it on my own and I certainly wouldn't have done a home birth without looking into it first. The most recent studies in Canada (on the West coast) show the best outcomes for MW attended home birth in comparison to MW assisted hospital birth and GP assisted hospital birth. So, knowing that, it became a no brainer. The UK has similar findings in their huge and recent NHS study on the topic but I'm at a loss for the USA. My midwifery specialist friend is away for the next few weeks but when she gets back I'll ask her about the US in general and Georgia in particular. I'm curious now, too!
At every appointment I see one of my two midwives. So I see each of the two equally. They'll both come to my home visit. And yes, both will attend the home birth. It is actually legislated here that two trained MWs attend home births. I love the continuity of care I'm receiving (they'll even prioritize me for future pregnancies, so I'll have the same two MWs for all of my kids). And our appointments are 1hr long time blocks so I never leave feeling like I haven't had time to ask questions. I realize MWs aren't for everyone but I'm really happy with my choice. I'm really in favour of a low intervention birth, too, and my MW's practice has only had 3 hospital inductions in the past 2 years (out of hundreds of births) so it looks good!
Low intervention and drug free sounds pretty damn brave to me! Giving birth in any form sounds brave to me, tbh! Who is attending your birth? Midwives, a general practitioner, or an OB?
Ps: half my family is American and I have family in Georgia but I've never visited! It is on my list!
@flyster crazy snow here too! I'm in central MA and the roads were no fun driving in. It really doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon, so I guess my plans of going out for lunch are not happening I had no idea it was going to be like this, I thought just a dusting! oh well. As long as the roads are clear for 5 PM when I have the long drive home I will be a happy camper!
@wirtlehm I would love love love a beauty kit...especially some bath salts.
@ChickenOnSunday my water has broken 5 of 9 times. Every time labor did not start on its own and I had to be induced. It broke twice in bed. Once was a big gush, the other I was able to jump up before making a mess. I always sleep with a waterproof mattress pad under me at the end just in case.
I don't want to do school today. . Thankfully there's not much on our checklist and my daycare kid cancelled, so I can suck it up.
We are stuck on baby names. DH doesn't like my top two picks. He likes Hannah. My brothers youngest child is named Hannah. It was on our list for years but he had a girl before us, so he nabbed it. I just think it would be incredibly rude to use the name too. I said no way.
In happy news I went shopping last night and finally scored some awesome sleepwear. I picked up something off the clearance rack at Kohl's, then I scored big for nursing wear at the thrift store (huge thank you to the mom who donated!). Finally, I bought a new infant car seat/carrier for the baby. My insurance company sent me a free one, but it is a convertible seat so not convenient for the first few months.
Glad to hear your baby's legs are okay! I can't tell what's a legs, arm, elbow, knee, etc. especially since the legs are normally bent and folded or whatever.
Good luck with your home birth! For some reason I'm thinking you are in Newfoundland....?
We had to go buy a car seat yesterday because I finally looked at the one passed down to us and it expires in a couple months. I guess I could've bought one in a couple months but it seemed so pointless. It was definitely not in the budget and now I'm stressed.

Check out Kohls.com! They have that extra 20% off and you can find a 15% off online too... plus free shipping and Kohls cash! May be worth it if it saves you some money! (Check the bargains announcement as I posted the codes yesterday)

@ChickenOnSunday - I was team-my-water-broke-in-bed. It didn't have enough time to get the sheets/mattress - just my clothing. I was in a really deep sleep too. Honestly, I jumped up knowing SOMETHING was going on, but it wasnt until I got to the bathroom I put it all together.
That being said labor still had to be induced and I still didn't deliver until 37 hrs later. That means it was 34 hrs of pitocin. Not happy. I just pray not again.

Thanks. I had a few coupons/gift cards for BRU so we went ahead and got it. We actually got a convertible for DD so we could put the new baby in the infant carrier. I love having it brand new and everything but it was no fun plopping down all the money for it.
On the slight bright side, H brought to infant carrier in the house to adjust it and DD kept wanting to sit in it. H was trying to tell her that it's for the baby. So she went and got her baby doll and put it in the car seat. It was adorable and I nearly cried.
@mishka29 thanks! My imagination sometimes gets the better of me. Lol.
I am a Newfie (born and raised) but I'm currently out west for school (AB). Oddly, after I came out here, almost my entire immediate family moved to BC (one teaches uni there, and my parents separately moved there to retire). So my visits are now to BC instead of NL and I'm unsure where I'll settle once I finish up here.
is anyone else addicted to looking at the Birth Announcement post to see if the number of replies has gone up? I know these poor babes are early, but hearing of their safe arrival is so exciting Keeping them all in my thoughts!
@maasybaby That is infuriating! I can't believe someone would do that! And insurance won't cover the cost because it is more than one tire? That's ridiculous!
Happy Friday!! Don't want to start a new thread on this...Does babies R Us usually have their car seats/travel systems in the store?! We registered for one but I'm not expecting anyone to buy it since it was so expensive but didn't want to get it incase someone does. Now I'm worried we will have to order it & it wont be here in time..anyone know?
@CogDis and @nbad311 I'm doing the home birth/natural thing too! My home visit is next Wednesday and I'm a little nervous. I think I've got everything ready she wanted me to have ready..? As FTMs, how did your family react when you told them you were going natural? My mom hasn't asked so I haven't said anything. I'm a little nervous about her reaction! DHs family is very supportive, which is nice. I even got the "I was born in a bathtub and turned out just fine" speech from his very elderly grandpa. It was awesome

So much for the "no stress" order from the dr. Kicking DH out of the house tonight with a friend of ours. He and his fiancé broke up in the past 2 weeks so they are going to the hockey game. Tomorrow night he has to go with his bosses to the fight at the American Bank Center. They have an employee fighting, have 2 tables, and taking clients. Considering our OB and MFM think baby will be here in the next 2 weeks I'm so not going to complain about a few hours alone.

Tomorrow night he has to go with his bosses to the fight at the American Bank Center. They have an employee fighting, have 2 tables, and taking clients. Considering our OB and MFM think baby will be here in the next 2 weeks I'm so not going to complain about a few hours alone.
