One of the students at the special needs school I'm involved with in the Congo has a very severe leg deformity, where essentially her knees have bent the wrong way and are stuck in that position (imagine bird legs, really). It prevents her from walking typical distances kids are expected to walk in Africa, so even though she is extremely bright and cognitively intact, she's been at the special needs school because it has dorms so she doesn't need to walk to school (and because of the looks she gets outside of the supportive special needs circle thats been created at the school).
Her condition was on the brink of becoming life threatening with the onset of puberty and a growth spurt (too much pressure on her spine, and misalignment of her pelvis, etc). Getting her surgery has been one of my goals for the last 2 years. We did a lot of fundraising and publicity this year - and finally came up with enough to fully fund her surgery, along with transportation to Uganda (no surgical facilities in eastern Congo)
And after all of the initial excitement and celebration... surgery time is approaching and now I'm REALLY scared. Like sat up in bed at 4am and couldn't even think about falling back to sleep scared. Any kind of surgery has risks, but surgery in the middle of Africa, and a long bus journey back home, etc... if anything happened to her, I'd feel 100% responsible and its weighing on me big time. Its going to be on my mind until I get word that she is fully recovered. Really trying not to stress over it, but that feels impossible at the moment.
You've all been so wonderful and supportive so I'm asking for some of that energy to be sent to this young lady... I'm not religious, but I'm not picky either

Prayers and thoughts and vibes and joojoo...whatever it is, she could use it. Her name is Donia.

****update 1/27
I got an email last night that Donia safely reached the hospital in Uganda after her long journey from DRC. Then I heard a few hours ago that she was seen by the surgeon today and is lined up for surgery on Wednesday, next week. Thank you all for your positive energy and it means a lot that she will be in your thoughts. I'll update again when I get news.
Re: A little request for all of the good energy you guys have...*updated*
Good luck Donia! x

Right now its scheduled for the end of this month, but in "Africa time", it could be later. "Scheduled" has a slightly different meaning there. I will definitely post an update. I'll be checking my email every .004 seconds once I find out she's on her way. I'm sure my boss will love that :P
