Itchy & red raw areola

Hi guys, I'm a first time mum & new to this baby bump forum and need some advice. My munchkin is 4weeks old & I am breastfeeding with this unbearable itch around both my areolas, does this mean its early signs of mastitis, thrush or an infection.. Also is it common? It's red raw & very itchy.. Is it also safe to use bepanthem? Pls help tks heaps!

Tks for your urgent response RN536. There are no patches in her mouth, I'll be going to the Dr tomorrow

At the moment I'm using Lansinoh for my nipples & started to use benpathen for the outer areola area, I'm not pumping at all just hand expressing before feeds as I've noticed I have an oversupply of milk. I agree @AmyG it could likely be a skin dermatitis infection as the redness is exactly the same on both breasts & very itchy, sore & hot.. I need to go to the Dr ASAP as it's not comfortable whatsoever.. Tks again guys for your feedback
  • With my first child my nipples did get very itchy & red. But it was only because my daughter had a bad latch that day. It's crazy how just a couple minutes of bad latching can ruin your nipples for days on in. What I did was put a warm wet towel on my breast & then applied lanolin gel. It helped the itching & soreness. I think the itching mainy was my nipples trying to heal. Hope everything gets better again for you mum & your doctor is helpful.

@asbs11 thank for that I will try your remedy & @AmyG*‌ I will also look into those herbal creams.. This morning I woke up & nearly fainted I'm not sure if this all relates to the rash I have or if I got up too quickly, I had to bed rest till now as I was light headed feeling a little better but not 100% off to the Dr soon...

So it turns out it's dermatitis I have cream to apply 3 times a day & straight away the redness & itchiness has slowly reduced

I use the earth mama angel baby nipple butter - goes on much nicer than lanolin and no skin issues (no baby issues either)
