Lincoln has been on brown rice for breakfast since he was 4 months, I have recently been adding cinnamon or nutmeg to it. For lunch I have been going through the list of veggies, one a week, the most bitter first. He had peas, green beans, zucchini, and this weekend he starts on carrots. I'm supper excited because the green veggies didn't go over too well but at least I know he isn't allergic. I love making all his food and loves watching me cook. This is such a fun new chapter we get to experience together.
Anyone adding rice cereal into fruits to make it thicker? The thought of mixing rice in my fruit doesn't sound all that appealing but just fruits on its own isn't satisfying enough for LO. She usually ends up with fruits and top with another bottle of milk. I guess that's ok too...
Since LO started formula he's been super constipated, we haven't started solids yet, but will be introducing some beans, peas, pears, apples to help alleviate that.
@augustusgoose - DS was the same way when I stopped pumping. He was still receiving BM, not as much. I found giving him very diluted prune juice once a day helped a lot (1/4 to 1/2 oz with 1/2 to 3/4 h2o). We also gave him water (a few oz a day). It took him a few weeks to regulate and now we offer water after his bottle and he takes it w/o problem. Hope you don't mind me jumping in, wanted to share what helped us. Hope you are feeling better too.
@Miss Renee - I can't tag you. The book I am reading (The Wholesome Baby Food Guide) mentions much like adults babies have different appetites, some eat more and some eat less. I think like most things babies there is no "right" answer.
How much milk / liquid are you ladies giving to your LO? I am afriad as I feed her more solid and reducing the bottles, she will not get enough liquid. Do you check the color of her pee? Or how can you tell if they are hydrated?
LO turned six months earlier this week and so far we have tried avocado and sweet potato. With both he made an awful face and started gagging until he threw up (even though both times he had not actually swallowed anything). I had only given him the tiniest piece, not a whole spoonful. Do we just need to keep trying? I thought he was ready but if he is doing this does it mean he's not ready?
I second the how much milk/formula are you guys giving, more importantly in what order? I'm still BFing but I'm afraid my supply is slowly dwindling. I try to BF her first and I'm only giving solids once a day. It seems like now that she's had solids she is holding out for them and not taking as much milk.
@skfg Ty, that's great. I called the nurse on line and she said I could give an ounce per month of age. Then she said that that is to much juice, so dilute with water in a 1 to 1 ratio. I said isn't a 12 oz of juice much and take away from his formula? She said that most of his calories should be from formula. Anyways I wasn't going to give him that much juice, your quanty seems much more reasonable. I'll try that!
We started with carrots at six months followed by yellow squash pear and peas. Skip the rice cereal because it's nothing but sugar and carbs and it is not necessary at least for us because our boy is formula fed now.
@augustusgoose - Hope it helps your LO. My peds office also gave weird advice. I use Dr. Sears as a reference, very pragmatic. I also heard solids sometimes aren't as constipating for formula fed babies. Not sure it is true or not.
Has anyone given their LO the puffs? At 6 mo appt, they suggested those so LO gets practice picking up food. He seems a bit young and it seems like too many new things at once - only been on solids for a week.
@AbbySeiden - I am not sure re: biscuits. I try to hold the puffs in my hand and let him gnaw. They dissolve easily, DS is not into picking them up yet. DS has no teeth yet.
As for good sites - ped recommended Wholesome Babyfood.Momtastic.com. I am reading her book (wholesome baby food guide) but the site is a great reference.
@abbyseiden LO has no teeth but she puts everything in her mouth and tries to grab everything within (or beyond) her reach. I plan to start giving her the puffs next week when I can stay home all day with her.
I just do one new veggie a week. Basically pick one from whatever we will be having during the week. Our pedi didn't really restrict us from any veggie and fruits other than acidic fruits like oranges and tangerines because it may upset her stomach.
Thanks for all the help! My LO is such a piggy I'm always looking for new things to feed him but don't want to push him too fast. Right now he's having salads three times a day. Rice cereal or oatmeal in the morning and purées for lunch and dinner.
Squeaker is just starting solids. We give her a bit of whatever we are eating. If it's something she hasn't had before we make a point to do it at breakfast so we can watch for a reaction all day.
It's going well so far. She is gassy, but she seems to enjoy food.
We started on green beans 2 days ago and he loved them. He ate almost half the jar of them yesterday. Today he tried apples and ate the entire jar! He seemed so hungry. He is 5 and a half months. A little on the smaller scale due to a combination of reflux plus his love for jumping and burning calories lol. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else's LOs started eating a lot super quick.
@AbbySeiden I got the Gerber brand and it says it's for crawler. She picked it up and licked it a few times before she could successfully put it in her mouth. Half the time she drops them and other times it got so moist that it sticks to her hand. She didnt have a hard time swallowing it. It melts in her mouth (technically in her hand) so I don't think it will be a choking hazard. She is used to eating solid by now so she has ok tongue control and makes the chewing movement. I think that helps.
@kaysa2 Just curious...how big is your LO? DS was 11.0 lbs, 21" when he was born. He is now 25 lbs and 30". Every freaking day someone has to tell me that he is toddler sized, like I don't know already.
@kaysa2 we are in the same boat. DD is about 20lbs and 30" long. Her torso is really long so 12mo onesies fit her fine but the pants still need to be rolled at the bottoms.
My mom bought us some of the biscuits recently and a hard, dime-sized piece broke off in DD's mouth when she gnawed on it (after which I went into a total panic mode, logically) but they did not seem to dissolve as quickly as I have been hearing so I fished it out of her mouth so she wouldn't choke. I'm not sure if it were just the brand (can't think of it specifically now but it was some organic something or other... not Gerber or a brand I would be familiar with) but anyone have some really fast dissolving biscuit recommendations? We are seeing the pedi tonight for her 6mo appt. so I will get his take on puffs and biscuits as well.
Our pedi said LO can have anything and actually recommended a diet rich in veggies and protein. I picked up a few purees with veg/meat combos, but the last few days LO has enjoyed the heck out of chewing on the ham we had for Christmas dinner. I don't think he has actually consumed any of the ham, but he seems to love the taste.
Can't figure out if the puréed peas or teething is causing mucousy stool?! LO has such a sensitive tummy. He was gassy on carrots, reflux with peaches, and now blow outs with peas. This is hard! I can't feed him apples and pears forever!
Regarding puffs..should you have tried the actual food before introducing it in puff form? Some brands have like 3 veggies/fruit in each puff.
@mullenem the plum organics ones are the ones we tried that broke off in her mouth (your pic jogged my memory) but I will try out the baby mum mums and bamba that you and @kaysa2 and @lest12 recommended! Thanks, ladies!
We've also got the okay for 3 times a day, I was told that some times a meal will be a couple of tablespoons or a quarter of a cup. My LO does not like solids at all. I am going to try some of the suggestions here and just keep ff on demand. I was told to try solids first so that he would be hungry and then top off with a bottle.
@augustusgoose i think that seems like weird advice because babies don't even understand that the purpose of solid food is to fill their bellies. I feel like if baby is hungry they're just going to get mad they're not getting a bottle and be less willing to want to try the solids....because their brain doesn't think, "oh, I can just eat some of this puree and I won't have this hungry feeling anymore!".
Anybody else having babies who refuse to eat solids? I'm not sure if it is because I waited until she was six months or what but she just clamps her mouth shut. I've managed to put little bits of food in her mouth but it's a struggle, it's been over a week and every time I try to feed her she does the same. She was always reaching for my plate and she ate a couple things here and there when she was 5 months so I thought she was more than ready. Any thoughts?

We started about three weeks ago and DD is just now starting to get the hang of it. I would just keep offering it to her each day but not forcing it.

That's what her pedi said, just keep offering it to her. But it's so frustrating! I guess I'll just give her more time.

Also does anyone know where I can find a list of foods that are okay for them to try? Like can I steam and puréed Collie flower or mash up beans?

Anyone introducing proteins/meats yet? I'm thinking about it but will wait until our doctor appointment next week.
It is really interesting to hear the differences in the doctor recs!
