GTKY: Musicals, Yay or Nay?

edited January 2015 in Trying to Get Pregnant
DH and I went to see Into the Woods this past weekend. We enjoyed it, but neither of us knew much about the show going in. However, we are big musical fans. So I'm curious: are musicals your thing or not? If so, what are some of your favorites, or what's your general musical style?

Re: GTKY: Musicals, Yay or Nay?

  • Me personally, I LOVE musicals! DH does, too. For our first wedding anniversary, he bought us season tickets to Broadway Across America. We're also planning a trip to NYC when shows really start back up again in the spring. We want to see Phantom of the Opera together.

Personal favorites (that I've seen): Rent, Les Mis, Phantom
Personal favorites (only heard the soundtrack): Miss Saigon, West Side Story

Haven't seen, or even heard, Fiddler, though. Bits and pieces I've heard, but not the whole thing. Always mean to, just haven't yet!

I really enjoy seeing musicals! DH isn't a huge fan so I'll usually go with my family. It has been a while since we last saw one but one of my favorites was Jersey Boys! Some others include Rent, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Mis.

ETA: Completely forgot about Chicago and Legally Blonde!!

  • I grew up going into NYC to see at least one show a year - also participated in plays in middle and HS. Love ALL the musicals - sing it out peoplez!!  Of all that I've seen, I still think Jekyll & Hyde was my favorite - very gothic and haunting.  Phantom is a close second. Of course I loved Les Mis, Miss Saigon was just ok but I still enjoyed it.

I love it. Never saw it on Broadway but saw the tour two or three times in college. "This is the Moment" was what I wrote on my HS grad cap! I was so obsessed. Still love it. :)

  • I love musicals!! I was in all of the in high school and have seen several! I've also been to two Opera's, which are amazing.

I've seen live: Les Mis, Guys and Dolls, Cats, the Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, The Sound of Music, A Christmas Carol, West Side Story, and The Woman in White.

Sadly DH is not interested in musicals so it has been several years since I've seen one. :(

  • An impressive list, @Remylove1011! Sorry DH won't go with!

Also, what operas have you seen? DH is a huge classical music and opera nerd, so I've been to a few of those, as well. He actually planned a proposal around taking me out of town to see La Boheme.

  • Complete musical nerd here! Love everything :) Favorites are probably Rent, Wicked, Spring Awakening, Into the Woods (haven't seen the movie yet), Phantom, Les Mis.. Basically everything and anything else.

Musical theater is like an obsession for me. DH likes most musicals too which is nice.

Funny story, when I was younger my little brother and I would perform musicals around the house, our favorite to do was Les Mis and my parents wanted to kill us

Yeah, my mom loves muscials so we saw a lot of them growing up! I think we were just a musical family in general. I was a double major in college, vocal performance and pscyhology, odd match right? It was always more of a hobby for me as I have a "pretty" voice but nothing poweful enough to do true opera. My sister was a Viola major and is actually quite good. As for my opera's I've been to see La Traviata and The Pearl Fishers ( Les pêcheurs de perles). I love La Boheme!!! I keep looking at the musicals/opera's coming to town near us and plan to force DH to attend something with me this year!

  • @southernpeach, we're seeing Jersey Boys later this season! It was not included in our season tix, but I know it'll be well worth it.

Loved jersey boys! Great show! Hope you enjoy it!

We saw a Met streaming broadcast of La Traviata a few seasons ago with Natalie Dessay and I LOVED it! It's about the only Verdi I like, though, I have to admit.

Also, my BIL plays viola for the Memphis Symphony! MH plays the cello (or did, until he became an engineer).

  • I haven't been in a long time and went much more when I was younger.  DH is not a fan (we mostly see live music, which i'm not complaining about!)  In high school I LOVED Rent!

When DH and I broke up the 2nd time (we started dating when I was 19 so we broke up a few times cuz I was a baby) he took me to see Phantom at the Boston Opera House.  It was awesome!  DH later told me he hated it but didn't let it show because he was trying to win me back.

  • I love it,I also used to the acting professionally.  I've been doing community theater now for the past 20 years I've done over 40 plays and musicals at this point.  I actually have a show that opens this Friday.
  • @Peaseblossom55, what show?? Love going to community theater!

@KawaiiKitsune, we lucked into Rent, honestly! DH and I went to NYC fairly early on in our relationship. We planned it for Spring Break because I was teaching at the time, and an Off-Broadway production of Rent was in its last couple of weeks, so of course, I insisted on that over anything else. Our Roger was actually the actor who played Angel in the Blu-ray of the final Broadway performance (see that, it's amazing - except the Roger leaves a little to be desired).
