February 2015 Moms

Anyone else's OB not want them to go 40 weeks?

Just got back from this week's OB appointment and apparently baby is so big that my dr has concerns about her going to 40 weeks. She is also finally agreeing with the us now, which puts my due date up from Feb 2 to Jan 26.

So I'm a little unsettled by how big baby girl could possibly be. There was talk of membrane sweeping in 2 weeks! I'm so not ready.

  • 3rd Tri u/s are very inaccurate for sizing.  Baring any other medial reason (pre-e, low amniotic fluid, bad NST, uncontrolled GD, etc), let baby come when s/he is ready.  39-40.6 weeks is full term.

My OB wants to keep baby inside as long as mom/baby are healthy.  Those last days are crucial for lung development.

  • Yeah I just got my scheduled induction date for the 4th, which is 39 weeks for me. I'm getting induced due to concerns with his echogenic bowel early on in the pregnancy

  • The doctors were concerned with DS that he was going to be well over 9lbs, and wanted to induce. I waited til I was 41 weeks before I induced. DS ended up weighing a whopping 7 lbs. He was all legs. Good luck to you!

  • I am having a csection at 37w1d if I can make it. I am having twins and have preeclampsia and HBP.
  • They didn't tell you how big they think the baby is but did tell you that the baby is too big and needs to come early?

I'm not doubting you but that seems odd. My last u/s was at 32 weeks and baby was "weighing in" at 35.5 weeks without any mention of being large so this may just be bag in that Dr's feelings and level of comfort.

I think you should makes sure the OB goes over every single detail with you concerning height, weight and the level of accuracy for the particular u/s machine they used so that you can make the best possible decision for your family. I know some machines can be off by as much as 1 lb.

  • My OB said they would likely induce at 38/no later than 39 weeks because of my GD.  I am shooting for 39 weeks, and might even push for later than that, but unless thy can show me something going wrong, I don't think I would go earlier.

Also, just to clear up any confusion - just because they induce early, doesn't change your due date. Baby is still only 36weeks and a day right now even if the plan is for her to come at 39 weeks.

  • I don't think I would be comfortable with that given that there is no legitimate medical need for induction unlike some of the other ladies here - as PPs have mentioned, weight estimates are just that, and not always reliable.
Given that your doc has moved forward your due date, perhaps baby girl will come soon enough anyway, when she's good and ready? Also not sure how I feel about sweeping membranes in general, but that's another subject.
Good luck, don't panic, speak to your OB again about your concerns and don't let yourself be talked into something you're not happy with!
  • I will be 36 wks end of the week my due date is 2/5 but my ob told me she wants to induced me for 2/2 ... I have type 2 diabetes with this pregnancy... Baby is 5lb and 6oz on dec 30 she told me everything is going good but she don't want me to pass my due date ... But Thursday I see her again so I will ask again...

We were told in our birthing class that ultrasounds have a +/- 2 pounds.

So, if your dr is thinking your LO will be 13 pounds I would be concerned. But, if they are predicting 10 pounds or so, you could end up with just an 8 pound baby. I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are with induction; personally I would not induce based on baby's estimated size (barring extreme medical circumstances like uncontrolled GD).

  • Because of GD, my doctor will not let me go past my due date. However, he has mentioned inducing a week early a couple times this pregnancy. I'm generally in the "baby will come when it's ready camp" and both of my boys came within a day of their due date, but we'll see...

I was dilated to 7 and had NO idea I was in labor with DS#2, and since we live 30 minutes from the hospital, that is a concern for me. I'm just waiting to see what my body does as we approach that final week before I make a decision. Maybe she'll come early on her own!

  • My dr brought up the possibility of induction at 39 weeks but is hoping I just go naturally before then (my DD was born at 37 weeks due to my water breaking).

II'll be honest that I'm nervous about induction if nothing else is happening naturally. I fear an unnecessary c-section could result. I am going to talk to her about this in a few weeks if nothing happens on its own (due 2/1). FWIW, I don't think 1 week early would be detrimental to the baby health wise, but I'm nervous that it might not work if my body isn't ready, causing issues. We shall see.

  • My Dr doesn't expect me to go to 40 weeks and she also doesn't want me to because of heart problems I've been having. Were taking it a week at a time though so we will see how long I make it.

  • I am being induced sometime between 38 & 39 weeks due to IUGR. The baby is measuring approx 2.5 weeks behind but the BPP's and NST's have been perfect so far - FX we won't have to go any earlier than 39 weeks!

  • My OB said she didn't want me to go past 40 weeks. I am hoping to VBAC, but if I don't go into labor own my own before my due date she recommends an induction or repeat C-section. She didn't say specifically what the risk with going past my due date is but I'm guessing if has to do with my history of c-section and the baby getting stuck. I was 3 cm dilated at 36 weeks last Friday and she is doing a membrane sweep this Friday to see if it will help me progress. I really (really!) want to go into labor on my own. Fingers crossed it happens before the 29th.

  • I have controlled gd and I'm going for a vba2c and I will not induce or do any other form of intervention before 41 weeks.
  • Yep! Baby is measuring "big" plus I have a history of late term loss so we will be doing weekly membrane sweeps starting in 2 weeks ( 37wks) as well as natural induction methods ( sex , pump stimulation , evening primrose oil etc )

@digwriter what exactly is being measured?  Your statement makes it sound like fundal height? I'm measuring 40 weeks for fundal height and I'm only 36 weeks. My OB isn't concerned about fundal height though.

How I "know" my LO is "large" is both growth scans showed her around 85% percentile which was about what DS was when he was born.

Are you going to have a growth scan?

I've had growth scans and bpps done. Every test is saying that the baby is really big.

  • I'd be concerned, too, if I were you. I'd certainly want more specific information in addition to the dates, "measuring ahead" and "really big" info you seem to have. None of that would convince me to undergo a potentially unnecessary induction.

But, like I said, I'd be concerned. I hope you get some better information. It must be frustrating and scary to sit with what you have.

    Hugs!
  • C section schedule at 38 weeks, I'm type 1 Diabetic. My water broke with my DD at 37 weeks 1 day though and she was born healthy as can be. Good luck ladies!!!
  • At the moment she isn't talking full induction, but I was really not prepared to hear the words membrane sweep at this appointment. She says we'll revisit the idea at my 37 week appointment next Friday.

  • I would not get an induction just because they were projecting a large baby. Like pp said, ultrasound measurements can be very inaccurate and induction increases the risks of additional interventions, including C-sections. Also, many women birth large babies without much trouble, so even if baby is large that doesn't mean that you can't have a vaginal birth.

I would, at the very least, seek a second opinion if I were you.
  • Weight measurements from u/s are just mathematical computations. They take the head, abdomen and femur measurements and run them through a formula......I would trust your doctor's call - I just remember my cousin had a c-section at 38.5 weeks due to diabetes and her son had to have special breathing treatment for almost 7 months because his lungs weren't fully developed even at that late in the game...

  • Just some positivity... Even if the baby is bigger than average, that doesn't mean you can't have a great delivery experience. Your body is made to birth your baby, and the baby will come when it's ready to be born. DH was near 11 lbs and born in an unmedicated delivery and his mom said it was her easiest birth out of 3 kids. Of course, she didn't know he was so big until after the birth so mentally she wasn't psyched out. As others said, late term ultrasounds are reknown for being way off in weight estimates. Try to do what feels right for you.

ACOG recently changed their guidelines that pregnancy is not considered full term until 39 weeks. They've found huge advantages to keeping the baby in an extra week or two. I understand not wanting to be combative with the doctor, but it is ultimately your choice to be induced or not. I really do believe the baby will come with he/she and your body are ready.

Pregnant diabetics are high-risk and that medical example does not apply to low-risk non-diabetic pregnant women. The children of diabetics are much more likely to have respiratory problems and lung development issues then others. The timing of delivery of these children is weighed against many risks and monitoring parameters.
