Insert Material Preference

Sorry if this was covered recently. I tried searching and didn't find anything.

ANYWAYS, I'm a recent convert to pockets (previously used prefolds/flats and covers). I've just been using the microfiber that comes with most pockets but wonder if the other options are better (mostly absorbency wise)

So, what is your favorite insert for daily use? Ignore overnight for the sake of this poll.

Re: Insert Material Preference

  • Ive never had any issues with MF, except I like to double stuff my pockets, and 2 mf gets bulky. So my pockets usually have mf+ either hemp or bamboo, sometimes hemp+bamboo, no mf.

If I am having leaks around the legs but a soaked insert, does that mean I need to double up on inserts?

ETA or increase absorbency another way like using flats

  • GMD flats or MF + hemp
  • I use flats, bamboo, and cotton/hemp blends. All work well, but flats are definitely the most versatile

  • My preference is a cotton flat, plus a hemp or cotton doubler when needed. I've been thinking about getting some GMD small prefolds to try just for variety.

Yes. If you are soaked but leaking, you need more absorbency one way or another.

We change every 2 hours. I'd like to save more frequent changes as a last resort.

  • My favourite inserts ever are AppleCheeks 2 ply bamboo. They are expensive but so soft and absorbent.

  • I second the Applecheeks 2 ply bamboo insert. I use them in my BG 4.0s. I just wish they were cheaper. At night, I use a bamboo + hemp if I'm using a GNHW pocket
  • Man I must be the only person out there who has never had a problem with MF?? I like hemp and bamboo and cotton and use some combo of those for overnight, but I've always just used the regular microfiber inserts that come with pockets for daytime.

I've had ammonia build up in them really fast, I think because of my super hard water.

Also DS didn't chunk up enough to fill out our pocket diapers until he was 10-12 months old. Up until then he tended to have leg gaps and leaks. I just found that natural fibers absorb better than MF. YMMV.

Thanks for the input everyone! It was really helpful.

I'm with you @freezorburn with the smaller baby. He wasn't able to wear pockets until recently and he's almost a year old!

Overnight I use 2 flats wrapped around a thin gerber prefold (burp cloth). I think I'll try using prefolds/flats for a while during the day to see if it helps hold me to the 2 hour diaper change mark.
