Non-medical L&D worries

Re: Non-medical L&D worries

  • I agree with the epidural comment... My mom missed her chance with both of her deliveries because she labored so quickly so I have a fear of that... Add in the likely snow and 45min drive to the hospital to her quick deliveries and I'm a ball of anxiousness about FI having to deliver the kid in the back of our car in a snow storm, drug free...

  • Snow. It's DC so it's not the most realistic worry, but Snowpocalypse 2010 was in February. And they suck at clearing snow around here. Fighting our way through a storm (though it's only three miles) or getting stuck at the hospital after delivery pop into my head too much.
Awaiting our bundle of cute chaos.

  • Having a good nurse definitely. My amazing nurse towards the end was present with me during transition and stayed past her shift to see me through to the birth of my daughter. She was exceptional and in my face, calming me down and making sure I remembered to breathe while I pushed.
Also, nurses are so important when attempting a med-free birth. It is tough and being surrounded by supportive staff is so important.

  • Let's see- I think I've been through it all between my two boys:

    - Dilating to 10 with no epidural (which I had requested 4 hours before, but the anesthesiologist was home in bed and in no hurry)
    - Being checked for dilation by a nurse, THEN by a student who was shadowing her so she could learn (I could have said no, but I guess they have to learn, right)?
    - I didn't have any terrible nurses in L&D, but did in recovery
    -On-call Doctor delivered my first
    - I'm honestly have no idea if I pooped on the table (and in that moment you could REALLY, TRUELY not care less)
    - Driving myself to the hospital because my OB told me I was in labor (dilated to a 6) at my weekly appointment and sent me straight over while my husband was at work. I walked by myself into L&D- awkward! Also makes me terrified of making it to the hospital on time with this baby!
    - They pumped me SO full of fluids with DS#1, I had jowels in my post-baby photos. Seriously- I didn't even know my neck was capable of that.
    - I was pretty sure my water started breaking while my MIL, BIL and SILs were visiting during labor, so they decided to stand behind the door curtain while the nurse checked me. Rather than, you know, leaving!! Yes, I said BIL, too.
    - I did vomit during labor with DS#1. In fact, my water broke while I was sitting in bed puking.

Yet, despite ALL of that, when I look back, I feel like I had very good, easy labors. It was the hardest several hours of my life (well, with DS#1), but it passes and the reward makes it all seem easy as soon as you're done. DS#2 was a breeze, but even if my labor with this baby turned out like DS#1, I wouldn't be too upset.
