Anyone had or know someone who had the wrong gender at an ultrasound?

We were super anxious to go and went at 13 weeks to a special 3D/4D facility. The results showed us we we're having a little boy! We were super excited but then I started reading on the internet (I know it's such a knowledgable source ;) ) and I'm starting to wonder if I went too soon. They say it's important to wait until 18-20 because you can clearly tell the difference. Anyone had any personal experience with this? Thanks in advance :)

  • That's what I've read and think because of that I'm going to hold off on the gender reveal. Thanks :)
  • Yes, happened to my friend at 15 weeks

  • I have a friend who was told boy at 14 and 15 weeks. At her anatomy scan she was most definitely a girl. I agree with pp don't paint anything yet!

  • I agree with PP's, I'd definitely wait until the anatomy scan to start buying pink and blue.

Just to throw a wrench in all of it, DH's best friend and his wife a few years ago were told at their A/S they were having a little boy..... fast forward to the birth, their LO was actually a girl, Surprise on delivery day! I know it is VERY slim that this happens, but knowing it happened to someone so close to us makes me nervous to start planning too much after our A/S later this month!
Happened to an old friend in reverse. A/S says it was a girl, but delivery day, lo and behold... A boy!

You found correct information there. Best to wait until 18-20 weeks for the anatomy scan. All babies have some kind of nub around 12-13weeks that can be seen and then develops into male/female genitalia.

I would take down the picture of your kids genitals. Not a popular move on this community board.

And are you trying to convince yourself you have a boy even though you have read about waiting until 18weeks for a more accurate scan? What is the point of this thread?

  • I'm sorry about this picture. I didn't know it would be that big of a deal. I don't care what the baby is as long as he is healthy. We were just going to have a gender reveal party and I would feel really silly if I revealed the wrong gender ;) again sorry for offending anyone
  • It's "sex" not "gender".

  • I'm 14 weeks today and believe me I'm just as excited to find out the sex of my baby as much as the other girls and you. However I don't think I would even believe an ultrasound right now. Our AS appointment isn't until February 2nd when I'll be 19 weeks. As much as it sucks to wait id rather wait until this time when the sex of the baby is determined for sure. I wouldn't do any kind of reveal parties, shopping for certain colors or anything yet until you get an ultrasound done when you're farther along.

It's okay. Just a common opinion that we shouldn't post pics of our kids junk on the internet for the world to see. I would hold off having the gender party til the AS. Can't be that long away for you if you are a June bumpie.

  • The sex is easier to tell at 15 16 weeks as far as the 2d 3d ultrasounds go. You don't necessarily always have to wait until 20 weeks. I know plenty of women that go to a reputable place to have a look at 16 weeks. Don't let everyone convince you otherwise. 13 weeks is just plain old science that it's not going to be very reliable.
  • Yep it's February 9th! I'm due June 29th so I'm a late Juner :)

Don't worry about it... It's just that these posts never go over too well on here.

Anyways, 13 weeks is way too early to tell from an ultrasound. We went in for our NT scan around 12 weeks, and the tech told me if she had to guess (we didn't ask), she would say girl, but she wasn't 100% and not to tell anyone. We actually found out early by doing a blood test and it was confirmed a week later that we were having a baby girl.

    Congratulations on your baby :)

  • The places that most of the nurses I work with go to it's 150 dollars and if they are wrong you get refunded and if they just can't tell then you get to come back at a later date with just the original charge.
  • My best friend was told at her 15 week nuchal ultra sound it was boy, than at her 20ish week ultrasound the dr was like Oops! Definitely a girl!!

I am so confused- how do you even get an ultrasound at 13 weeks that would tell you if its a boy or a girl? My friend said her ultrasound tech could tell somehow tell the gender at their NT scan. I call BS- my doctor said that I could do the anatomy scan from anywhere between 18-21 weeks, but if I wanted to know the gender, do it closer to 21 weeks.
  • I'm really eager to find out the gender as well. 13 weeks really is way too early to tell. There is a reason your OB doesn't tell you the sex until 18-20 weeks, they don't make you wait just for fun!
  • You should wait for your anatomy scan for sure, but even then it's not 100 percent accurate. My cousin's doctor consistently told her she was having a little girl, they even painted a giant Georgia Bulldogs Cheerleader on the nursery wall. Come delivery day, the baby definitely had a pens. They kept the cheerleader on the wall though, they said he'd like it when he got older!
  • I went today . 13wks 6days it says GIRL. Mine were all right up to this one...

I personally don't know someone who had it wrong but heard plenty of .. " I know someone who knows someone who's baby was the opposite of what the U/S said "..

I wouldn't paint the room ..lol
  • Happened to someone I know at 22 weeks. Their little boy went home without a name in a pink car seat.

  • I'll add some more anecdotal evidence. A close friend of mine was told at her AS scan at 19w that she was having a girl. Fast forward to delivery day and baby was all boy. She was a good sport though and dressed him in all the pretty pink outfits she'd been given.
  • A coworker keeps telling me horror stories about this. ("Horror" lol) his wife was high risk and at every ultrasound until his child was born they were told girl. The woman who sits next to me was telling me how they threw him a very, VERY pink baby shower.... and then got the email the day the baby was born "introducing our SON (yeah you read that right)" I giggled. Just goes to show, sometimes it's a surprise even when you don't think it will be!

  • I know a woman who was told at her A/S that she was having a girl. They decorated everything in pink, bought all girls clothing and accessories. Found out at birth they were wrong! It was a boy! They had to redo the nursery, buy all new clothing and everything else they bought in pink. And this was at her A/S as I said, so it can be missed even then.

  • I had a friend who was told at her 20 week scan that she was having a girl. She had some complications towards the end of her pregnancy which causes them to do another ultrasound that revealed it was a boy. She had already bought all the girl stuff and had it all ready to go.
  • The fact that so many people get it wrong at 20 weeks makes me almost want to just keep it to myself when I do find out!

  • I love how this thread had almost gone poopy after the ultrasound photo to some great stories surfacing. Loving the stories ladies. Sounds like there are more occasions of , "It's a girl! Nope it's a boy and we missed the penis in the u/s."

  • I had a ultrasound at 14weeks and was told it looked like a boy and another at 16weeks was told it looked like a boy and I never belived them and at 20weeks it was confirmed that I was having a GIRL!!!! I also had a friend who had an ultrasound done early and was told it was going to be a girl and at 27weeks was told she was actually having a little BOY!!! This time around with my second child I am waiting till I'm 23weeks to find out baby's gender so that way it's a lot clearer
  • @leenziepops‌ me too! That was the true point of my post initially. Thanks everyone for sharing! We have decided to not share until the anatomy scan at the beginning of Feb even though from the sounds of it that can be wrong too ;)

I felt like this too and we found out through genetic testing! I kept thinking that if they said boy, what if it was actually like Jamie Lee Curtis (genetically male but anatomically female)? I think we are safe with XX, but I'll still be relieved if the tech will confirm it (which I'm told she won't, because she "doesn't believe" in checking the sex).
I'm sorry, what? Dude, that's your JOB. I'm a travel agent, and I don't believe in going to Vegas (I just don't get it, like why bother?) but that doesn't mean I refuse to sell it when people call. That's my job.

How can a tech just get away with refusing to check? And, if I'm not mistaken, isn't the sex organ check part of the A/S anyway? Even if they don't tell parents, don't they have to check? I'm just so confused.

  • My cousin even got told the wrong sex at an 18 week anatomy scan. But the baby kept moving, there were a ton of people in the office, waiting their turn, and tech was in a hurry so did not get a great look to find out the sex.

  • Friend had A/S & then a second sonogram at 36 weeks, both said girl.... At delivery, little Cooper was born. Her nursery was done, girly clothes hung in the closet. I felt so bad for her.
  • A good friend of mine was told boy at her a/s, and at another scan around 30 weeks. She now has a 4 year old little girl.
