Infant Shoe Sizes?

For those of us that can't pass up a good deal/need baby shoes for announcement photos/love to shop, can someone please enlighten the mysteries of infant shoe sizes. I would like to keep an eye out for shoes for next fall and winter. Pics of cute finds are welcome, too!

Re: Infant Shoe Sizes?

  • Shoes are kind of just accessories until they start walking. At that point, they are probably a size 4. I found them to be a hassle to put them on my kids any sooner than that.

This. We didn't even bother with shoes until DD started walking.

  • ^^ yup. A lot of docs tell parents not to use shoes until walking so the babies foot properly develops without constraint too.

Also the sizes NEVER match up well. My DD's foot was constantly smaller than the "months" they say it should be.

Have fun getting a couple pairs but I wouldn't spend too much on them!

  • The only shoes we ever did when he was little were robeez, which are more like slippers. Honestly anything else is a waste of money and a complete hassle. Once he started walking with his walker we went to stride rite and had him measured.

  • I don't know if you have Clarkes in America but that's where I go. They measure the feet proppely by length and width. My son got his first pair for his 1st birthday in March because he was walking by then and then his 2nd pair for christmas. We allways take him to be measured proppely. I did buy him some cute timberland boots but they never fit in the same way so I'll never buy again and put them away. I have realy cute booties/ socks for this little one though!
  • Eh, I won't waste my time with anything below a 4 this time. DD started wearing a 4 around 10 months and is still in them (now almost 18 months). Especially having a summer baby again, I know that they'll never have shoes on.

  • I think Carters have them sized 1, 2, etc. I don't really remember.

Like PP we rarely had him in shoes. But there are times it's just makes the outfit. :)

    Happy shopping.

  • Thanks for the responses, ladies. I am really only planning on getting a couple pairs of shoes for when baby is little. One of those will be a pair of Uggs, because, New England. And will prob only get one other pair. Are Robeez still around @Beachy730‌? If the Uggs are really what I'm focused on right now, should I get size 2 or 4? Both hubby and I have big feet, but don't know if that makes a big difference when they are so small.

Yes they are, haha DS is only 19 months. They've been around a long time though. DS actually has a pair that still fit him that he wears as slippers around the house because they have better traction than socks. They are super thin leather bottoms though, and are ok to wear when learning to walk too because they are so soft. https://www.myrobeez.com I think DS was in a 4 around 11 months?

I have found that infant shoe sizes tend to follow clothing sizes. 0-3 months is size 1, 3-6 months is size 2, 6-9 months is size 3 and 12 months is size 4. All 4 of my kids have followed this pretty closely. H and I have big feet also.
  • I work on a kids clothing store and the general rule of thumb for sizes is 0-3 months are size 1, 3-6 size 2, 6-9 size 3, 9-12 size 4. This is average sizes so not all babies will fall into these categories. Look for soft sole does for babies that are not walking. Padrigs are a great slipper/bootie shoe with a leather sole.
  • I bought these cute little newborn-sized fake Uggs for DD to go home in (she was a Feb baby). They were horrible and didn't stay on her feet. July baby= no shoes for us until he/she is cruising!

I agree with previous posters to not really bother with them until baby is walking. My daughter was in a size 3.5 this past summer until 18mos then had a huge growth spurt and is in a size 6 now At 2yrs. She also gets wide width in her size. We have gone to Stride Rite since she has been walking so she is measured and because they carry wide widths. They can be expensive, but we watch for sales, joined the rewards program, and snatch up any coupons we can.

I love baby shoes, but I also love baby suspenders.  He loves wearing socks and shoes too, and tries to put them on himself; perhaps its naive but I think its because he's always worn them.  I would say he was a size 2 around 6 months, size 3 around 9months, 4 at a year and he now at 15 months has hard sole size 5s but they are a little big.

  • Oh and baby moccs are great for the infant/crawl/just starting to walk stage.  Freshly picked are too expensive for me so I buy the kinghoo versions.

  • Agree with pp, this is something I wouldn't buy in advance. DS wore a pair on my wedding day but aside from that it wasn't until he was walking and 1 that he wore shoes. I've also been advised it's not the best for their development although I can't recall why. He was size 4 at 1 yr old
  • No shoes until waking, and even then, soft-soled. Barefoot is best whenever possible. However, I'm sure in colder weather some knit or fleece booties would be appropriate. Robeez and similar are great for almost walking/new walkers/indoor 'slippers' in cooler weather, but we won't need those until closer to spring 2016 at the earliest, I'd say. I'd wait until baby gets here. My first was pretty tiny, but had long feet. We needed to try anything before buying with him.

  • We live in the mid atlantic area and with my first he just had soft shoes until he started walking. More for fashion less for functionality. IMHO uggs for an infant are a waste. There are other brands that make warm boots that won't cost that much for them to grow out of in 1-2 months. Check out zappos, I would say go with a size 2-3 if you guys have big feet though.
  • If I find out I'm having a girl, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to resist the urge of buying a ton of crochet baby flip flops on Etsy. Obviously they aren't practical shoes...but shoes are pretty much for looks until they can walk anyway. They are all so adorable!
  • Uggs won't even stay on long enough for a picture on an infant. I wouldn't bother.

  • This is definitely something you learn as a STM+. With the first you want to buy all these adorable things regardless of price or practicality because they're so itty bitty and cute. Then later you're like yeah those were a waste. Or by the time you think about using them they don't fit anymore.

OP buy all the Uggs and adorable shoes you want. But most likely you'll look back when baby is a year old at all this shit you barely or never used and think "man I should have just bought diapers with that money."

  • I was worried towards the end if my pregnancy because I didn't buy shoes for DS. He was a Feb baby and we practically live in the North Pole (freezing and snow until may, last year snowed in June). I bought a pair or two of little slippers for 3$ each shortly before he was born. Those slippers never fit him, they were a size 2 I believe. He had super wide feet and was just huge in general. Socks in his suggested size never fit his feet properly either, we had him in 12-24m by the time he was 3m old because it's all that would stay on. Now he has normal sized feet, but his calves are so wide that he doesn't fit into boots properly.

I understand cold Northern winters, but I would never recommend buying expensive baby shoes. Your best bet the first winter is having footie clothes with socks for the baby. My MIL knits and made him lots of heavy socks, even those didn't fit him. Robeez shoes were great because of the stretch and as long as he had socks under them and a blanket over his feet in the car seat he was fine.

  • Two of my friends bought my ds size one sneakers because I'm a runner so they thought it was cute. Well he was 10lbs when he was born so they never even fit! He was born in April and we didn't buy him shoes until he was walking outside the following spring. They really aren't necessary and socks can be super cute too and much cheaper. I'm very frugal though so there's that :)
  • I agree with PPs...LO wore shoes for Easter and Christmas and that's about it. During her first winter, I'd take her to the babysitter's house in footed pj's.

  • We didn't do shoes for our kids until they were around a size 4. But each kid wore a pair of shoes for their baptism when they were around 3 or 4 months old. Both wore a size 2, I believe.
