High-Risk Pregnancy

gestational diabetes- super scared

I just did my 3 hour glucose test.  The nurse called me and said I failed the one hour and two hour test, and past the three hour test.  The nurse then said another nurse would be calling me tomorrow to discuss further details of it.  She didn't give me any numbers or anything.  I'm so upset, but what does that mean, I'm very upset that she would call me and not give me all the details.  I failed the one hour and two hour but passed the three hour.  Any thought or opinions would be greatly appreciated, especially if you have went through this. I hate how I after to wait till tomorrow for most of the details.

Re: gestational diabetes- super scared

  • That is odd. Of course I have never heard my numbers before either and failed both this pregnancy and the last.
Even if you have it...hopefully it can be diet controlled. Both my last 2 pregnancies have been diet controlled GD.
I have such a better hang of it this time around and have done great with weight gain. So that is a plus side to having it.
Don't worry. Hope you hear great news when you talk to them.

  • I was diagnosed with GD with both my first two pregnancies, kept it controlled with diet but ended up on insulin at the very end due to high fasting numbers. This time around, I passed my 3 hour test (only 1 high number). However, my mama intuition said that seemed weird, and I asked if I could start testing to monitor myself. Sure enough, within a few weeks, it was obvious I had GD.

The GD diet is not fun (and I was devastated when first diagnosed with DS1), but to be honest... it kept my weight gain in check, I had healthy weight babies with no problems, I had extra monitoring, etc. So, I actually felt better just knowing I have GD and keeping it in check this time, than "believing" I passed my 3 hour and hoping for the best. I'm sure your doctor will tell you more, but there's nothing to be terrified of. It's typically very manageable and temporary!

  • I've always heard a lot of people fail the initial tests and pass the later tests as they set the limits low so they don't "miss" anyone. So if you passed the 3 hour they may just want to go over some precautions or have you follow a diet to be safe. Even if you do have it, it's manageable with following the diet guidelines. Try not to worry, but I know that's easier said than done! Waiting for results and info from docs is the worst!

  • I have type 1 diabetes and this is my first pregnancy having the disease. You will be ok! I promise. Just make sure you get all the info you need and dont be afraid to ask any questions! You can do this mama! If you need some advice feel free to message me!
  • If your numbers were high enough to cause harm, they would have had you come in. It will be okay! I'm a type 1 diabetic so trust me, I've been there.

  • Not knowing is the worst. I think your nurse meant you were over at the 1 and 2 hour mark. If you are over in 2 blood draws, you are considered having it. Once you learn how to manage, it's not that bad. This is my second time. You can't eat everything you want, but it's also not ridiculous as well.

    good luck!
