Baby Names

Little Sister Name Choices!

We found out we will be having a baby girl in April and have narrowed down the names to 3. Big brother is Elijah goes by Eli.

Little sister name choices:

Zoey Ann
Samantha Ann
Viola Ann

(Viola is a family name and my third choice right now)
Ann is the name of my aunt and godmother.
I prefer Zoey and my husband prefers Samantha. My dh worries that Zoey is cute for a girl but can't see it as an adult name. I like Samantha and nn Sam but do not like Sammy as a nn.

Would love some feedback!

Re: Little Sister Name Choices!

  • Zoey Ann: I really dislike the Zoey spelling and agree that it looks kind of "cutesy." Zoe is the proper spelling and will age well. Zoe Ann would be my favorite from your list!

Samantha Ann is nice. You can pretty much control her nn now while she's young, but she may decide as an adult that she prefers Sammy to Sam. You just need to decide if that's a dealbreaker for you.

    Viola Ann is gorgeous!

  • I like Zoe, no "y"

  • I like Zoey as well but the spelling is incorrect. The spelling should be Zoë, it is more professional this way. Zoe is just Joe, the umlaut makes the eeee sound. By far Zoë is the best choice. I have never met a Samantha who had favorable morals (just my experience sorry to the Samanthas out there) and Viola just sounds odd for a child to me. Good luck.
  • Viola would be first choice, then Samantha, and finally Zoe (no y).

  • Samantha
    Zoe

Viola is not pretty sounding to me
    In that order
  • Love Zoey, dislike the others. I hate the nn Sam for a girl.

  • Viola!! If you go with Zoe, drop the y. Samantha is also nice and underused now in my opinion. I knew 10 growing up but I don't hear much on little kids anymore

  • Viola and Zoe (no 'y') are my favorites.
  • Love Viola! By far your best choice.

I'm not a Zoe fan at all. It just doesn't sound or look pretty to me. I don't like the wee ending sound.

Samantha would be my second choice. It has a dated feel to me but much better than Zoe.

  • I like Samantha a lot. I like Zoe okay as well. Viola just isn't very pretty to me.
  • Zoe or violet
  • I love Viola, but if probably call her Vivi.
  • Posted too fast, forgot to add that Samantha is ok but feels dated and Zoey does feel too young to me for a given name.

Also love Violet, which would still be a nod to Viola but a little more modern.
  • I like Zoe best, followed by Viola.....then Samantha (distant third)

  • I like Viola best out of those three.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • love zoey anne congrads gurl
  • Zoey (I kind of like it with the y, but agree with others that it looks more childish that way)
  • Viola sounds like an old lady to me.. I like Zooey
  • I actually was referring to the Salinger book, not New Girl ...
She could actually just be pronouncing it wrong, not spelling it wrong.
  • I like Samantha best (by far) then Viola, and I'm not a fan of Zoey or Zoe.

Just food for thought: my friend named her daughter Samantha thinking she would hate the nn Sammy, but she's been Sammy almost from the day she was born and my friend said, "it just fits her!" I guess my point is, you might be surprised what you end up liking.

  • Yea I know that's who she's named after. The name actually becomes "real" once someone has it, doesn't it? I can name my kid chvf$!&ncgj and, once I do, it becomes a "real name."
  • So if Zooey is on a birth certificate, it's not a real name? What would her real name be if I'm wrong?
  • Pretty sure names can't be "invalid" as a name, by definition, is "a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to." So, if you are referred to as "Zooey" then that's your name and there is a history of use the moment it's used, isn't there?
  • Another for Zoe without the y!

  • Since you like Violet, that's my vote.  Samantha is good.  Viola is old lady, and Zoe is nms.
  • Viola or Violet

  • Samantha, definitely.

Zoe or Zoey is far too trendy right now... I've run across at least a dozen in the last few years. Kind of seems like Zoe/Zoey is the female counterpart to Jackson as of late. Make. it. stop.

  • Thank you everyone! And I'm sorry this post sparked a bit of name debate! I agree- Zooey looks like it should be pronounced like gooey ;-)
  • +1 for Samantha
  • Either Viola or Zoe no y
  • I really like Viola!

Ye gods! Does that mean that my son's real name becomes Monkey several times a day?!?

It was a noble effort, but I'm afraid you're just wrong about this.

Monkey would be a name, yes. It would be a nickname. If you wrote it on his birth certificate, it'd be his legal name... Wouldn't it? You shouldn't be so confident if you're clearly wrong. There is a difference between a common noun and a proper noun. A name for a person is a proper noun- it can be one of a kind - that's why names are always capitalized... They don't operate under same rules as common nouns.
  • What are those rules?
  • And, I'm in agreement-- Zooey should be pronounced as if it rhymes with phooey or gooey. It's better suited as a pet's name. Would it be "valid" then? Ha!
