My husband wants a vasectomy. If/When I am sure I am done, I will be thankful for that. I am not a fan of hormonal contraception, so this will be a good option for our family.

@kmf218‌, what happens if you don't get a cycle? Are you breastfeeding? I don't normally get a cycle for a good 9 months, but they say you can still be ovulating. I wouldn't be comfortable with that

Sorry @4littlebears‌ I just saw this. Yes I plan on breastfeeding. Mirena isn't recommended to be implanted until 6 weeks after delivery and can be implanted while you breastfeed. My doctors want to wait another 4 weeks (that's where the 1st cycle comment comes in) after the initial 6 weeks to consider implanting it. If I'm still successfully breastfeeding and want to continue after that time frame my doctors and husband and I will weigh the risks. There is a slight increase for perforation while breastfeeding on mirena but like I said, my doctors and I will cross that bridge when we get to it. If I'm not comfortable having it implanted or if there is some sort of complication with cysts after giving birth then I will look for an alternative BC.

A good friend of mine had mirena implanted while she was breastfeeding and she didn't have any problems. Her supply wasn't affected at all. The only "annoying" part (her words) was that she had to go to her OB every month to have an ultrasound done to check for perforation. I personally wouldn't mind the extra precaution but her OB is an hour from her home so the ride was mostly what she complained about.
I had one implanted after my last child, while I was breastfeeding, a week after my 6 week check. They didn't do any ultrasounds or anything. The worst part was I got a six month long menstrual period starting the day they implanted it. I didn't like the mirena at all. I'm glad you did though.
