NYE UO?

Re: NYE UO?

  • I have a Cleveland/Chicago accent. Nasally. Perfect.
    I say ant not auuunt.
    Suck it, haterz.
Oh and I love baths, but I have the tiniest tub right now. A bigger tub is on my list when I buy my next place.

  • A southerner saying the "u" in aunt is worse than hearing a Baltimore accent say...anything.
OMG Baltimorians (is that a word?) kill me with their "oo" sounds. It makes me giggle.
Like all my coworkers have this accent.
    I am so very sorry.
Yup, that's what happens when you work in Murrrr-len.

I'm so glad I don't have an accent. For real, CT is surrounded by all these states with accents (MA, NY, RI) and we didn't end up with one in this state. We basically sound like everyone on TV.

    That is actually Columbus, Ohio.
  • I have a goal of not crossing the Potomac @Mackalien13

  • Omfg. I can't with you ant sayers. There is a frickin u. Utilize it.

But lots of words have a superfluous u that isn't pronounced.

    Yes, this.

Aunt (ahnt) is the British pronunciation of the word-- which makes sense why a lot of New Englanders use that pronunciation.  Neither is wrong, just pointing out that the American English pronunciation is "ant".

Just like (as an example) the American pronunciation of "often" is said without the T, but the British pronunciation is off-ten.  Neither is incorrect.

  • I have a goal of not crossing the Potomac @Mackalien13

The office is moving into DC next  year. Still on the other side of the potomac. But at least it's west of DC 295
Let me clarify that- I try my very best to not cross the American Legion Bridge or Hwy 15 over the Potomac.

  • I don't like coffee but if you drank my SO's coffee you wouldn't either. He makes it so strong.
I only like baths for getting things done (dewookying my legs).
I think I say ant not ahwnt. I have one aunt who pronounces AWHnt (with much emphasis on the AW). Its her trying to sound posh but with an east London accent, sounds odd.

    Since I'm on page one...

I'm liking our new Keurig 2.0.  I mostly drink tea though....the Tazo k-kups come out pretty good.... the basic Awake one or Chai.  I'm also trying a CBTL brand Darjeeling that isn't too bad but prefer the Tazo.

When I want coffee, I've been doing the simple basic Donut Shop one (UO?).... 8oz with one packet of Truvia...works out pretty well.  And I'm surprised because usually I feel like I need 5000 sugars to make coffee taste good, but the one packet of stevia takes the bitter out enough for me somehow.

  • If you are from NE.

    Tonic is soda.

    Tonic water is tonic.

    Soda water is club soda.

Not always... I think Vermont is the exception to all the New England rules. I call it soda (coke, pepsi, etc)

Vermont also calls "soft servce" ice cream creamies... cue laughing but I will never call it soft serve damn it.

PS - I know I'm way behind but some of us are working lol.. on page 6 now.

I know I have an accent. I don't care. My Texas coworkers try to make me say unnecessary shit so they can hear it. They all swear they have no accent. It doesn't bother me. I am who I am.

I love, love, love NOLA accents. I wish I had one.

Does @mcbenny have a NOLA accent? My shit is all over the place. I like to call it Southern propper.

    Only on page 12

What the hell is a Southern CA accent?  Are you all assuming it's surfer dudes and valley girls like the movies say, or am I missing something?  I guess I don't notice...

I'm from AZ... I don't think they have accents there so I don't think I do?  Just like they don't have daylight savings time either ::flips hair::

  • The accents on Tru Blood still kill me. Tara is too damn country. They're not far from where I'm from if it's near Shreveport. I don't know anyone who sounds like that. And the Cajun accent. Wtf was that?

  • I do know what a Cajun accent is.

Ok ok.. there are some PARTS of SoCal I think where there may be a certain accent.  Not really my circle though.

If I hear it, I think I'm usually at school. Omg some of the college kids in this area sound frickin obnoxious when they talk.

I hate the fake southern accents on pretty much every show. I hate that people think that's how we sound. A real southern accent is beautiful. Fake ones are atrocious.

    This is what I mean!

  • I have made it through the first season of Tru Blood. I guess the story is cool. I love Lafayette. I just can't stand to hear them talk.

  • My SO gets annoyed with me when I hang out with friends who have accents because I very quickly pick them up (poorly) and use them when I talk to them.  It probably sounds STUPID when I do it but I can't seem to help myself.  I think in my head I am helping them understand me better?

My mum does that. She also affects an accent when telling a story about people from certain areas. Example: telling me a story about an east Indian friend she adopts a bad easy Indian accent. It is borderline offensive.
Eta: my mum not you with being offensive

  • My UO that isn't a UO is that my child needs to understand that when he doesn't have school that means he needs to sleep the fuck in.  That's like...a law.  He needs to understand.  When you have no reason to get up, DON'T GET UP.  Especially not even earlier than you would if there WERE school.

I am in so cal, originally from nor cal. I don't think I have an accent, and most of the people I know don't have a "southern California" accent. Unless they live in Pacific Beach. One weird thing so cal residents say is "the 5" or "the 101" instead of interstate 5 or highway 101. I have also heard that outside of California, the term freeway is seldom used. Not sure if that's true. We pretty much exclusively say that, and not highway, even though I think they are different.
Yeah... "The 5" ..."The 405" ... "The 91". ..etc.  That was definitely something to get used to when I moved here

Back in Tucson Arizoney, we had ONE freeway/interstate and it was called "I-10" ...my H (who grew up in SoCal) made so much fun of me when I moved here

I've converted to the CA way now though.
