Pineapple

I'm OBSESSED with pineapple this pregnancy. I eat them almost everyday. With DD I got really intense contractions after I ate them around 38 weeks. I ate them for lunch today, currently 27 weeks, and an hour later I was having intense contractions. For over an hour. They did stop after I laid on my left side and took a 30 minute nap. Why does this delicious fruit do this to pregnant women?! I doubt I will eat any until closer to my due date. It's so depressing lol. Does anyone know why pineapple causes this?

Re: Pineapple

  • I ate a ton of pineapple the last time we went grocery shopping about 2 weeks ago and it didn't cause any issues, but now with me having contractions the other day I'm afraid to eat any more :(

It's sooo damn good though! But I have no clue what the association is. And please watch the contractions- who knows if it was related to the pineapple. Keep an eye on it!

  • I've been obsessed with pineapple and have been eating a small container a day. I'll be interested if there's a connection there...
  • Wait, pineapple causes contractions?  I'm in Hawaii and have been eating pineapple like CRAZY!  But, no contractions so I'm not stopping now.  Actually, I've had fewer BH contractions since getting here.  But I had always heard lemon causes contractions, is that true, too?

  • I won't be eating it until I'm much closer to my due date. Which kills me because I crave it so badly! I will find another fruit to satisfy my daily fruit cravings. I'm just glad the contractions stopped. I almost called my midwife because they were every few minutes. Laying on my left side and some water helped. Thankfully. I'm not ready for this munchkin to make her appearance yet. I'm going to ask about the pineapple at my next appointment, which is in a week.

  • This is interesting. I have never heard this before. I was into pineapple early in my pregnancy, but then it made me sick so I stopped eating it

  • mmm... I wish I had some pineapple around. We do have leftover pineapple upside down cake from Christmas dinner, though.

  • I just think it's weird that it happened with both pregnancies. I can't stop eating it! And pineapple upside down cake sounds AMAZING!!!
  • Fresh pineapple is supposed to aid in ripening the cervix. It helps get your body ready and jump start labor if your body is ready.

  • Oh! I thought of another use for pineapple! You can use it to tenderize meat. It will break down the fibers if you use it in a marinade. But don't marinate too long, or it will make your meat turn out mushy and creepy.
  • I wish my fiancé ate more fruit! That's all I have to say about that lol.
  • Like I said- supposed to. I don't think it hurts to try toward the end of pregnancy. I think most women are just ready to be done by the end and will try almost anything. I ate a ton of pineapple, drank gallons of raspberry leaf tea, took evening primrose oil, did reflexology and had lots of sex to attempt to get my son out last time. It's the same with castor oil- if your body is readying itself, it can jump start things. A friend took it too soon and all she got was the crazy poops. She took it again after her body had started dilating and effacing (but not in labor, non ontractions) and had her baby that night. Everyone is different and different hints will work for different people.
  • Raspberry leaf tea is supposed to tone your uterus, so if you drink it you should drink it daily through third tri. It in no way is supposed to help speed or induce labor, just make labor more efficient. If you even believe that. (I drink gallons of that shit right now)
  • Pineapple has been weakly linked to uterine contractions because it contains Bromelain.  But honestly the amounts it contains is minimal, and there haven't been any studies to confirm a connection at all.

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is DELICIOUS!  I started drinking it last pregnancy because I heard it helps make your uterus more productive during labor or something.  I never actually stopped drinking it I ended up liking it so much.  Mix with lemon juice and agave.  OMG I love it!!!

And I only had a five hour labor.  Could mean something, could mean nothing.  But I'm not going to stop now.  :)

  • I want to try raspberry leaf tea. I love raspberries but I've never tried it. I'm all for going overdue with this baby. I want an April baby ;)

I should warn you that most people who drink RRL don't really like it.  I think I'm either weird or I just know how to spruce it up.  I'd make huge pitchers of it in the summer by brewing about 1/3 pound of loose leaves and then adding some ice cubes, lemon juice, and agave.  It was like raspberry lemonade but more tea-like.  Now in winter I drink it hot with a bag of black tea (my daily dose of caffeine).

And I've been on vacation for a week now and left my RRL at home and I'm drooling thinking about it.  I didn't realize how much I loved that tea until this moment...

  • I like raspberry leaf tea, but I like bland herbal teas that taste vaguely grassy. I find them soothing with apiece of toast. Adding honey or lemon would help, though I like mine plain.
  • I never heard that pineapple helps with heartburn, I find that pineapple causes heartburn for me

  • I was obsessed with pineapple my first pregnancy. I would eat it until my mouth hurt too much. I've read you would have to eat, like, 3 whole pineapples in one sitting in order for it to even remotely cause contractions. But who knows. I see no reason to avoid it.

  • I have been eating tons of pineapple this pregnancy. I love it!

I had heard that the core has the most concentrated amount of Bromelain and it would take you eating like 8 pineapples to even effect your cervix. It is also not present in canned or jarred pineapple, so only fresh pineapple has the enzyme. I'm pretty sure that excludes cooked pineapple as well (because common sense and all).

  • It does weird things to me but it's all I want. I have to try this raspberry leaf tea. I love tea and drink raspberry iced tea all the time. I doubt it tastes the same, but I will definitely be trying it!

Li hing mui is a type of powder you can sprinkle on stuff. It's made from a super sour pickled type seed. It's delicious on gummy bears, shave ice, pineapple, or eaten alone... If you like the whole sweet/sour combo.
