So it's a cliche for new parents to be shocked and appalled at the cost of daycare, and I knew that when I called the place today to ask about it- but DAMN I was still floored by how expensive it is. $333 a week for infant care. This is not one of the fanciest places in town, but it's a well-regarded local chain with a location 5 miles from our house. (Something downtown on DH's commute was out of the question- they all have multi-year waiting lists.)
Since I'm self-employed and have a flexible schedule, we could get away with part time care- but no one seems to offer it for infants (I guess why would you when the infant spots fill up at the full time rate a year in advance?) I felt silly calling this early, but she said the earliest spots they have open right now are August 2015, so we'd need to make a decision and sign up in the next month or two to get a spot in September/October like I was thinking. What. the. actual. fuck.
I don't like the idea of a home-based daycare unless it was someone we knew- and we don't know anyone who does it. (We live in Baltimore City, I'm not dropping my baby off at some stranger's house.) My FIL watches my SIL's baby three or four days a week and it's possible we could get in on that- but he lives 45 minutes away from us. It doesn't seem realistic to do that multiple days a week. Now I can see why my SIL bought a house 5 minutes from her parents!
So. What are you guys doing about childcare, or do you know yet?
Re: Daycare Stress
My plan is to work from home and try my luck with a nanny coming to the house...at least I will physically be there, so I'll know if something isn't right, and hopefully I'll be able to get away with only part time care, and save some major $$$. I'm starting to really really REALLY regret living so far from any family members

If you only need part time care have you considered a nanny? You might be able to find a college student who can work around classes? Good luck with your search!
It's $5000 per family for FSA and you can claim an additional $1000 on your tax return. I so wish it were more... We had $18k last year for 2 kids (niether being an infant!) but thankfully my oldest is now school age. I still need to find care for the 3-6 month age range for baby. I'll be home for the first 3 months and our private school doesn't accept before 6 months (I'm already on the waiting list for when that time hits though!). So not looking forward to two seperate daycare bills. At least I get a discount when they'll both be at the same school!
We are seriously considering moving to a less expensive area so I can stay at home, but that won't happen for awhile. My entire family is I. This area so it's a big and very difficult decision.
Also I don't think you should knock in-home daycares without even checking them out. Many moms do it, and bad things happen at daycare centers too. If you have other mom friends try and get some referrals. Also, ask for references from any in home daycare you visit. You should also be able to check if they are licensed through the Department of Children and Families website.
I understand why you and your DH felt compelled to give her something at that point but that miscommunication is all on her. That really makes me mad!
When we got pregnant the first time, we were still really early in our careers, so we made the decision to move back to our hometown and start careers there. His mom keeps them when I work (contract, so it's flexible) and our backup is the sitter my mom used when I was a child so I know her well. Neither caregiver is perfect (I could go on and on and on about some peeves) but I know they are very loved and will never be left to cry it out, which is important to me.
Our biggest problem right now is that not only are there wait lists, but I've been told that the likelihood that 2 spots would open at the same time off the infant waiting list for the twins...is pretty much slim to none. One lady at a center even told me it would be "an act of god" for that to happen. Wow. Soooooo that's discouraging.
At this point our only option is to look in to in-home daycares in the interim. We honestly don't need full time anyways (DH is getting interviewed for a new job right now actually that would almost double his salary and get him in to what he's actually been LOOKING to do instead of retail management, so I'm praying praying praying he gets that. Once that gets settled we'll know exactly how part time we need), and all of the centers around here don't really do part time. They would be considered "drop in care" even though it will be the same schedule each week, and I've done that before with DD, and it was a nightmare. I had a day where they turned me away saying they didn't have the staff and since DD was drop in (because she was part time) they didn't have to take her. I can't have that happen with the twins.
So we will see what we can find for in-home care. If DH does end up getting this new job, I'm going to talk to my job about going part time, otherwise I'm going to leave my job and go back to my old part time job where I worked from home, and then I will just look in to a part time nanny.

Debated care at someone else's home but price was comparable to centers here. Not comfortable with someone coming into my home. My MIL would love to watch the kids but she doesn't drive and there are other factors which would stress me out and into the looney bin so we'll be living tight for the next 4 years but it's worth it.
And yes, check into FSA for child care. You can put in up to $5,000 a year per family pre-tax. It was a great thing this year.
