POSTERIOR POSITION ?!

Hi Mummies to be just curious if anyone is in the same boat as I am I'm 37 Weeks and 3 Days pregnant and having signs of pre labour according to my midwife and baby is not in the "ideal" position for birth !! I have lost my mucous plug already and I have just learned that baby is back to back and there's very little chance that he will be turning anytime soon because he is so engaged in my pelvis. It is very painful and I have been having the worst back pain ever shooting spinal pains

Re: POSTERIOR POSITION ?!

  • Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and if so what did they do to encourage baby to turn I have tried several positions but the pain just is unbearable.

  • I'm 37w1d and my baby has been in the posterior position for weeks. He has tried to turn a few times, but I don't think it's happened. I don't have any extra hip of back pain though.

My doctor isn't concerned about this, but I'm a little nervous about the increased chance of long labor. I really haven't done anything though. I'm trying a few techniques from Spinning Babies (sitting on a birthing/exercise ball, forward inversion, sitting upright more often) but mostly I'm just trying not to stress about it. If he doesn't turn, he doesn't turn and I'll deal with whatever comes with that.

  • My sister in law had a posterior baby and a fast labor/delivery (1st child). I think you will mostly end up with a lot of back labor, but she was able to have vaginal birth.

  • My son was not in an ideal position and neither is my daughter. My son turned while I was in labor though and I'm hoping my daughter will do the same. Your midwife should be able to help during labor if she isn't rotating like she should. My friend who is a doula said that most babies turn in labor. She recommended changing sides every 30-45 minutes and not laying on your back while in labor until you are pushing.

  • Both of my babies were posterior. My son turned while pushing, but my daughter cane facing the sky. My labor with my son was all in my back, and with my daughter I felt it in my back and my pelvis.
  • Crawling around on your hands and knees (both before and during labor) is supposed to encourage LO to turn to a more ideal birth position. Also, like the PP said, Spinning Babies has some good advice. Good luck!
  • My baby was posterior at my 36 week appointment and my midwife advised me to try being on my hands and knees rocking my hips for 20 mins a day to get him to turn around. I also tried acupuncture for the first time there is a pressure point on the outside of your pinky toe that just needs to be pushed for one second to encourage baby to turn. My baby had turned around to the correct position by my 37 week appointment last Monday.

  • DS was in a posterior position. I had all back labor pains, but I delivered him without any issues.

  • I just had a baby like this.  Pain was really bad in pelvis and back, even with the epi.  I didn't know she was in that position until I was already in labor and asked the doc why it was so painful even after I had the epidural (she's my 4th and the pain with epi was similar to the pain I had with DS3 when I didn't have the epi).  She didn't turn.  My doc was not concerned at all.  Just makes labor more painful (yay).  I was still able to have a vaginal delivery.

  • Consult spinning babies and look up rezobo sifting on there. Have someone help you do it often with a sheet or blanket, even in labor. My doula said she does this with posterior mommas during labor with good results.

  • Both of my girls were posterior. With DD#1, I couldn't push her past my pubic bone and she was not tolerating labor so off to a csection. I blame some of it on unproductive pushing at the end of a 36 hour induction. I also was only pushing on my back with her. I had back labor the whole time. With DD#2, I went into labor on my own and I had a VBAC after a 17 hour labor. I had an awesome nurse who helped with getting me to push on my sides and in different positions. Oh and she was 2 pounds bigger than my first. At my last appointment midwife said baby is posterior and suggested doing a lot of pelvic tilts or leaning over an exercise ball.

  • Thank you all for you advice and support hopefully bub turns soon and I have been practicing positions ever since I found out as I hear that by baby being posterior its way more painful then the "ideal" birthing positions.
  • My first was posterior and turned during labour, but it was long and pretty painful on my lower back. This baby is also posterior. I've been advised to go on my hands and knees part of every day (midwife said scrub the floor). Also sitting with knees lower than hips is meant to help. Good luck!
