Name question for those who work w/kids under 5

Bear with me if this question sounds a little anal! ?I have loved the name Olivia for years, and have always wanted it for a girl's name. ?Of course, now it's been on the top ten SSN # list for a while. ?I am a teacher, but I teach music to K and up. ?I've only taught 3 Olivias in 2 years of teaching. ?How frequent do you find this name in kids "recently" born? ?I guess I'm just paranoid because I'm a child of the 80s and my name is Jessica and it just feels SO generic and overdone. ?

I can't really talk myself out of Olivia. :) ?However, I just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Re: Name question for those who work w/kids under 5

  • Not a teacher, but also a Jessica of the 80s and I feel the exact same way about naming my future children.

  • I don't work with kids under five, but It's my name, so I notice.  I only knew one other Olivia growing up and I think it was a freak thing.  Now, every time I go to an event where there are younger kids there, there is always an Olivia.  I hear it all over the place.  I go to the grocery store and there is a mother yelling at her Olivia.  (of course because I grew up the only one, my stomach always drops and I think - what did I do??).  I LOVE the name, and grew up wishing women did the junior thing too, because it WAS unique, but not weird with a really cute nickname - Liv.  But, I think it is going to soon be akin to Jennifer (or Jessica).  Normal and common.  Which is fine, but not what you are going for I think.
  • I work at a preschool with 430 kids and I think maybe 2 of them are named Olivia.  I know more Olivias in the 5-10 range.
  • Coming from another Jessica, I wouldnt take the risk.  I dont know any little girls names Olivia, but wouldnt name my child any name that I knew was that popular.

It has been hard for me because I love the names Sophia, Abigail, Ava, and Olivia, but I gave them all up because I refuse to name my kids anything that is top, or even top 100.

  • thanks girls! ?maybe i'll just name her jennifer. ;) lol
  • 4 years of teaching K and I havent had an Olivia yet.
  • I don't teach, but there are three Olivia/Livi's in my daughter's Pre-K class.  It is a pretty name though.
  • It really depends on where you live, find your state's SS website and look up the baby names for 2008 for a better idea.  At my preschool, a few years ago we had 3 Olivias in one class.
  • I've worked at a K-3 school with about 600 kids for four years. ?I remember 2 Olivia's. ?I also work with preschoolers at church (around 1500 members), and we have one Olivia.

    I love the name!?

  • I have an Abigail, which was #4 on the list for 2007, and, sure enough, she goes to daycare with 2 others (both a yr older than her). I couldn't worry about that though, I liked the name & not many others. Plus NOTHING goes with our last name, I was 2wks away from my due date so I went with it. I'd say if you love it THAT much, use it.
  • I just happened upon this board by a link on the nest.  And this ironically was the only post I opened other than the one linked.  So, I don't know if this site has been discussed here.  But, this is a cool site that shows names popularity and does surveys of what people think of certain names.

    https://www.babynamewizard.com/namemapper/

It is kind of neat to play on.  On the namemapper, Olivia is much more popular in northern states.

  • One thing to remember too is that there are more names in circulation now than there were even in the 80s. So (pulling numbers from my head but I knwo there are articles on this) lets say Jennifer was #1 in 1982 with 20% of baby girls born. Now, Emma might be number one but only has 11% of baby girls born. (numbers and names are wrong but that is the jist).

So, the chances of another Jessica/Jennifer crazy happening with the popular names now is slim. Even a popular name for today wont be nearly what those of us with common names from the 70s/80s experienced.

IMO Olivia is a beautiful name, and I doubt it is/will be as common as Jessica - not even close. I think you are safe!

  • I'm not a teacher either but love the name Olivia Kate if Dh and I have another DD.  I'm also a Jessica of the 80's, and although it didn't bother me too much, there were too many of us...lol :).
  • I teach (older kids though) and have only taught one Olivia in 5 years. ?I know of one Olivia in K and 1 infant, but they spelled it Alyvia or something weird like that. ?
As a Jennifer, I relate to your concern. ?Definitely play with the name mapper on the babynamewizard.com site - but I'd say that there is no way Olivia will be the next Jessica or Jennifer :-) It's one of my favorite names, too!?
