GTKY: Most exotic meat you've ever tried?

2»

Re: GTKY: Most exotic meat you've ever tried?

  • My father raised me to try different types of food, he often tricked us into eating different meats. Here is my list:

    Emu
    Ostrich
    Rabbit
    Goat
Horse (I was in Japan and unaware till after)
    Turtle
    Alligator
    Venison
    Sweetbreads
    Cow tongue
    Pigs Feet
    Octopus
    Conch
    chicken livers
    duck
    pheasant

I'm always on the lookout for new meats on restaurant menus.

  • Nothing super exotic:

lamb/rabbit/duck/snails (at french restaurants over the years), frog legs (on vacay somewhere waaay outside of the city), chicken hearts (at a Halloween party where the host was trying to gross people out), haggis (in Scotland at a research conference), and finally anything off a sushi menu - eel, octopus, sea urchin.

  • Cougar! It tastes a lot like a pork chop and honestly wasn't bad. He turned the cougar into a rug so it sits at the top of my staircase...I feel bad every time I walk by :(

My husband is vegan and I'm his exact opposite because I eat EVERYTHING. I'll only add in the two I haven't seen yet : caribou (amazing!) and oxtail.

Oxtail is seriously one of my favorite foods in the world. Sooo delicious.

  • I live on the wear coast of Vancouver island so I've tried TONNES of seafood.
    I've had ostrich before lol
  • My Grandpa was a professional hunter/fisher/trapper for his entire life. We used to go spend the summers with him, so we ate....pretty much everything. He made a lot of "meat loafs" that had whatever he happened to catch. I stopped asking after a while, but we've eaten beaver, opossum, deer, pheasant, any type of fish you can think of.

It wasn't pleasant, if I can be super honest. I just don't think Grandpa was much of a cook as most of his stuff still tasted pretty "game-y" but it was food. haha :)

  • Chicken feet, horse (by accident), frog legs, alligator, emu, turtle, rabbit, snails...

The horse was in Germany, I asked for the house specialty and when they brought it they said, it's horse! I ate it anyway and it was actually really delicious!
  • Oh I forgot when we went to France (I was 16) I had snails and fois gras (duck liver). The snails were gross but the duck liver was very rich.

  • I'm a Midwestern American girl but I lived in South Africa for a bit so I've had my fair share of zebra and warthog!
  • I haven't tried anything exciting, but my cousin is getting married next fall and squirrel is on the menu. I imagine deer meat too. Pretty excited.
  • Reading some PP lists of food made me wanna puke. Not to adventurous with food but while in Ecuador you must try guinea pig. Everyone thought it tasted like dark meat chicken I thought it was disgusting.

  • Not exotic but I did have a reindeer hot dog when on a business trip in Anchorage that was DELICIOUS.

I've also had bison, venison, alligator, boar, and hate goat and lamb. I'm pretty mad go up for trying anything once. That being said, a restaurant in Tampa had some bad press over serving lion tacos and I would never eat that. I though it was lion FISH, but nope. Simba.

  • I've unknowingly had horse before. My ex-bf had made himself dinner & I stopped in to pick something up & had a bite. Just like ground beef, but will not be having it again!
  • Frog Legs
    Rattlesnake
    Rabbit
    Duck
    Dove
    Squirrel
    Alligator
Venison (all the time! A majority of my fam hunt)
    Squid (love me some calamari!)
    Turtle
    Bison
    Veal
seafood galore, but listing and thinking of all those would take forevs
  • I'm pretty adventurous and will try anything at least once. Even though I haven't had everything mentioned by PPs, I'll just list what I've had that hasn't been mentioned yet:
    Reindeer
    Balut (fertilized duck embryo)
  • I've had reindeer too when I was in Finland - I really liked it. Elk is big here in CO and I like that too, and prefer bison to beef.

  • I grew up in Canada, in the Rockies and my dad hunted. We had deer, elk and moose a lot.
Down here in NY, once i tried alligator at a street festival... tasted like chicken but with the texture of fish fillets.

Otherwise I haven't had anything terribly adventurous unless you count steak tartare I had once when I was in france (basically raw beef)
