  • Also, after a few threads regarding holiday movies, (@marisakathleen @harti09‌ ) S12 inspired me to watch some oldies. So I recorded White Christmas and Holiday Inn. Last night, I got halfway through White Christmas and was all "meh" about it. The jury is still out on that one. I HAVE been singing "Sisters" all day. BUT there was a promo for Miracle on 34th St which I has forgotten about and have not seen in YEARS!!! I set it to record this morning and now I'm watching it now while drinking a hot chocolate and folding laundry. It's rain/snowing out and we have plans to bake some cookies after naps. 100% pure Happiness :) If only my presents would wrap themselves.....
I've never seen Miracle on 34th :) I recoreded it last year and never got around to watching it. I'm hoping I can find it again and really try this time. My WS hot cocoa came to work today. I can't wait to try it out. Enjoy!

  • I'm so emotional lately.  I have all the feels.

There's a guy who hangs out in our office suite.  He's not an employee of us, he just does some work on the side for one of our start up companies, but spends all day in the office because he has nowhere else to go.

He's Chinese, and has his PhD from the university, but can't find a job.  His father passed away in China, and his mother is living with his father's parents, in some sort of indentured servitude situation.  So he's desperately trying to find a job to help his mother out.

Well, he's destitute, like basically only eats whatever we put out in our kitchen, but he bought us all Christmas cards.

I cried, and then ran and called to have a gift basket made up for him that I can pick up tomorrow to hopefully keep him fed for a few days.

    I have the sads.

Ugh, some people have it so incredibly hard. I can't even imagine bearing that kind of burden. His poor mother.

  • Can I talk about this land I'm obsessing over for a second?

I am a little apprehensive about buying a piece of land that is so constricted (not really any surrounding property to buy / only 10-11 acres / covenants), but I think I might make an exception for this property because it's gorgeous, private, perfect location, and the price is right.

The 35 acres surrounding the side and back of the property are under the same covenants, so it protects all of that property from any live tree removal, unapproved buildings/fences/etc, junkery, multiple residences, division, or sale.  The houses are all large and very nice, and the only "unprotected" side of the property is heavily wooded so I feel like the whole thing is insulated from any future developments or crap bringing down the value.

Our house could sit on the back (southeast) side of the property so I can  have the whole back of the house overlooking the woods/ravine, with about 8 acres of pasture in front.  It shaves 15 min off my drive to work but keeps us close enough to town.

The only thing is that the property is weird.  There is an easement that goes straight through the middle of our property - it's a curvy gravel drive lined with pine trees - it looks nice and goes back to a fabulous house.  So we'd use the land south of the driveway for our "home and pasture", but on the north side of that driveway...WTF?  Just consider it a nice buffer for property values?  That far north leg - I mean, it's right next to another house at the front of their 'neighborhood', so maybe I could grow Christmas trees or fruit trees?  I'd have to keep it looking nice for those neighbors, so maybe I'd tree it in so they don't have to look at uncut pasture?  It's kind of useless.

  • Stephan and I were discussing family size yesterday and I think we may be done at 2. It makes me incredibly sad at the prospects of being done but almost really happy and ready for our family to be done and grow together if that makes any sense at all.

I told him I didn't want to say we were done yet. I wasn't ready to. That idea of the "perfect" family is pretty tempting. 2 kids, 2 parents, boy, girl. I know it's so cliche and I hate when people say that you have the perfect family now, but It really kinda feels that way!
I feel pretty sad thinking that we are likely done at two kids. I keep hoping H will change his mind but he's pretty firmly set with two being our limit. We decided to stop talking about it because I can't get on board at being done right now so we are pretending it's not the elephant in the room.

  • @melsax I know I shouldn't laugh, but I did slightly!

@Eastie156 I wouldn't think of it as the elephant in the room.  DH and I did the same thing.  After Luci was born I was so firm, OAD and happy to be.  He wasn't feeling done, and we decided to just leave it be for awhile.  It came up between us a few times and we talked through it a bit until we came to an impasse each time.  Now, if DH weren't sick we would probably be discussing #2 because I finally realized I wasn't ready to be done, and he realized why I was so ready to be done.

I did, I was so surprised by not only the gift but at their excitement.  I seriously thought some of them didn't really like me, but they all seemed so excited.  I have to PIP a picture later, but seriously, I cried and laughed and told them thank you a million times.

@melsax does he have shoes that press on his toes?  Winn had shoes that did that when she was tiny and her toenail cracked and got like that.  If not, I would guess there's a fungus among us.

Another random-Dick's Sporting Goods can sick a big one. (Ha!)
I had 1 more present to buy for DH and they have this buy online, pick up in store deal. Awesome. Saves me some time IN the actual store with my kiddos. I found a Nike golf 1/2 zip pullover in my cart, it qualifies, my store has it in stock and Nike is 25% off. Score. So for 2 hours last night I tried to buy that damn thing.
Granted it was on and off, i'd refresh and re-enter my username and CC info only to be kicked back to my cart. Over and over again. I even switched items to see if that was it. Nope. So I eventually gave up.
Went to the actual store first thing this morning and found out that my local store doesn't even carry that item, despite the website saying that they had plenty in stock(color, size, etc) I was plenty annoyed. I had to pick something else, which was fine. And then we wandered (at Jack's speed) around the store looking for their Chicago Bulls section. Not near the Bear's section or the Blackhawks section. It was on a the wall where you walk in mixed in with Wisconsin gear and another local college that is red/white/black so it was camouflaged.
So annoying. And I think I'm done complaining for the day.

I had the opposite. DH's man products made me ill. I had to have him switch everything up and stop wearing cologne. It lasted most of my pregnancy.

  • THT, are the people in the back with the driveway the ones selling the property? You don't see those kind of interior lots often. I wouldn't worry about that other side though. You will live mainly at the acre around your home. Maybe put a studio or barn on that side eventually.

DH was adamant about being done at 2. I always kind of figured it made sense to just go with the person who wanted fewer kids bc I know it would have stressed him out to have another. there are still times I see a newborn and think, "Awww, how cute, what if we had another one," but most of the time I'm happy that we're on to new phases and our family is complete.

@hmp1 I believe they are the original landowners.

I don't think the other landowners would ever approve of me putting a structure on that piece of the land, which is fine.  I do wonder what kind of upkeep they will expect since it's right next to two nice houses in the 'neighborhood' part of the land.  I'd ask before buying.

I think I'd keep the land (it can't be sold off, and helps me hit the 10+ acre mark so I can have critters), but maybe use it as a bargaining point to get a reduced price.  They can't charge the same price per acre for that useless 3 acres as the other 8 contiguous acres....IMO.

  • omg that is adorable!  I would want that close to my house!

The covenants state that the house, any outbuildings, structures, outdoor lighting, decks/patios have to approved by the Board.  The Board is made up of all of the parcel owners (there are 7 total); each gets one vote.  I am actually not too turned off by this because we would never do anything tacky.  I think anything reasonable would be approved.  We've been by some similar developments and there is always a huge turd in the group... so based on that alone, I have gone from anti to maybe pro- covenants.

I'm back and forth on feeling claustrophobic from the covenants.  I think it protects us more than hurts us, though.

I'm a fan of HOAs/boards. They make you jump through some hoops and sometimes get it wrong, but for the most part they keep the neighborhood value up. We were in a very strict area in TX and now a more laxed but still have covenants like we can have a second, detached garage but we cannot have a car port. But the garage still has to be approved by the board to meet all the requirements.
