STM: does this remind you of right side round pain (ETA pink spotting)

Yesterday I began having pain across my stomach that was pretty uncomfortable but seemed like perhaps stretching. I made note of it but tried to ignore it. The pain then went away. A few hours later I went to stand up and had the most intense back pain on just my right side- to the point I couldn't catch my breath as I was walking. My right side tightened up and the pain wrapped around the right side (as if along the side of my stomach) from navel down to my thigh and through that edge of my back. I tried to use the bathroom but the pain was so intense that I couldn't. It scared the shit out of me but I sat down and started drinking. The pain went on for 10 minutes and then seemed to stop. My mom and I sat talking for 20 minutes or so and I thought it was gone but as soon as I got up the pain was back and as I walked to the bathroom again it had me doubled over. Same pain trying to urinate. I waited again and had the same thing happen again later.

Long story short I suppose this is where I'm looking for advice. I've never been pregnant so I don't know if this sounds like RLP but I called the dr on call (who isn't my dr) and he said it sounds like RLP. I asked if it's normal with RLP to have back pain while urinating that prevents you from going. He said the uterus can put pressure on the bladder and that was the end of that. But even now it's an ache that starts out sharp and continues into a dull pain that gets better after laying on my left side for a while-lying on the right side makes it worse.

Is this something that merits a phone call to my own OB? If the pain had gone away I would probably agree with the dr and just leave it alone, but I woke up tonight to try to go to the bathroom and had pain again. For those who have experienced RLP, do you remember symptoms like I've described? When I google RLP it doesn't sound like this to me. :(

*for whatever it's worth, I was in on Friday and had protein in my urine but the nurse said it could be from not drinking enough and I didn't think to ask OB...

Eta: And to make the stress worse, I have had pink spotting now this morning. So perhaps that call is in order either way now...

  • I've never felt anything like this...but maybe something with the kidneys. Hydonephrosis, kidney infection, or maybe sciatica?? My RLP is usually when I sneeze or turn unexpectedly. It usually lasts only seconds...not ten minutes. If it continues today I would call, but I'm a first timer so maybe someone with more experience has some insight. Hope you feel better and good luck!

  • I had a very similar pain about a week ago but mine was in my lower left back and happened in the middle of the night. It was probably the worst pain I've felt in my life. It woke me up, I also tried to urinate thinking I could relieve some pressure, but nothing worked. I was just about to get in the shower thinking heat would help but ended up vomiting from the pain before I could get in. Within five to ten minutes it was gone. I eventually made my way into the shower and I think the heat helped a bit but I also had a lingering type of ache the entire next day. I called the nurse's line and they had me come in, took urine but showed nothing abnormal. Baby's heartbeat was great so doctor thinks it was a "me thing" and not a "baby thing" and nothing to worry about. It has happened again also at night once since then but not nearly as bad. Long story short I don't think it's RLP and neither did my doctor. I've been using a heating pad every night before bed and also trying to drink more water in hopes that helps. I felt 100 times better after going in and hearing the heartbeat so if that's what you need to relax then call the doc. Please keep me posted if you figure out what this might be and I'll do the same.
  • @kbradley721 thanks for sharing! I'm definitely hoping mine is like yours and nothing too serious. I hate being paranoid; at the same time, holy hell this is really painful! I think if it's still going this morning I'll call just for the fact we are heading into a holiday. My main worry is a uti or kidney issue, but I don't know. I am praying if goes away so I can feel like slightly less of an insane person.
  • My RLP doesn't sound like yours.
I would try and get in to see your Dr. If nothing else than for a little piece of mind over the holidays. Better now than a trip to the ER Xmas morning.

Good luck and hope it isn't anything to worry about.
  • I'll be sending positive vibes your way! Let us know ❤
  • I've experienced RLP, but not to that extent. But I know it's different for everyone and some women have severe pain with it. The pain you described sounds exactly like what my sister goes through when she has a kidney stone attack. Flank pain in the back that wraps around her side - so bad she doubles over and usually ends up vomiting. It will come in waves for her and in between she just has a dull ache.

Not saying at all that this is what's going on, but maybe a possibility? I agree call your OB if you haven't already. Hope you get it figured out!
