Baby Names

Margo, Margeaux, or Margaux

This is our finalist with Reese as her middle name, but which spelling should we go with?
Hubby likes Margeaux which I was originally drawn too. However lately I've been worried that she might have to spell it out for everyone forever and hate it.

We both won't go with Margot.

Also, any ideas on what nicknames might be? We couldn't think of any.

We have a few reasons. We live in TX and worry that people (my lovely family included) will actually say Mar.got and pronounce the T as I've seen it in the past and when I read Margot it looks like maggot to me which I dislike.

If you don't like the way the correct spelling looks, pick a different name. Margot is the best spelling. If you're not going to do it right, then just stick with Margaux, because adding in the extra e to make it look all fancy when it's just wrong doesn't help anything. Also, don't use Reese unless you are honoring someone, because it's a boy name.
I was unaware that Margot was the correct/only acceptable spelling. I have seen all of the ways listed above and they are all legitimate. I didn't add an extra e to be fancy onto Margeaux nor was I trying to be unique with the spelling.

  • I like Margeaux. I am from South Louisiana and eaux always makes an o sound so I think it is perfect.
  • I would have used the Margot spelling but since it's not an option I'd go with Margo.
  • Years ago, my friend's flower girl was named Margeaux and I thought it was a beautiful (and legit!) spelling. I was disappointed to find out that's not the case, but what can you do? Go with Margo or Margaux. A nickname for Margo could be Go (as in Gone Girl).

  • If you won't do Margot, of the three: Margo.

Or you can name her Margaret Reese and go with Margo as a nickname?  In my opinion, you can spell nicknames any way you'd like.  She'd always have Margaret as a formal name.
If being a math nerd is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
  • When I was little, I had a neighbor who spelled hers Margeaux and no one ever spelled it right. While it's a cool to use the French spelling, most people won't have a clue how to write it. Some people are okay with that while others get offended when their child's name is spelt wrong . . . .

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • Of your options, I'd go with Margaux. Margeaux seems fussy and like pp mentioned -eaux is a plural ending. Margo looks like Mango to me.

I'm also from South Louisiana and CANNOT get behind Margeaux. The -eaux thing is such an annoying, trendy thing (and I say this as a person whose maiden name ends in a -ux). Depending on where OP is from in Texas, Margeaux will just look uber-trendy. I prefer Margot or Margo if you simply cannot have the T.

Just because it makes the right sound doesn't mean it's the right spelling! Is Loreuh a legit spelling for Laura? Is Turreessuh a legit spelling for Theresa? Is Jawn a legit spelling for John? No? Then put that argument back on the ridiculous shelf it came from.
Who says it's not? Who determined the correct spellings of individual names? Did you? If not, you certainly don't have the right to say a name is legitamate or not.  Nearly every name that exists today is a variation of another name.  The english language is frought with spellings that based on your logic, wouldn't be the "right" spelling.  It's the nature of the beast.

  • History and linguistics determine the correct spelling of a name. People using what "sounds right" or "looks better" do not.
  • Wow. I didn't expect such passionate responses. I had no idea that Margeaux wasn't an acceptable and also correct spelling. I'm totally okay with not spelling it this way which is why I asked for opinions but I was unaware that it was such an divisive issue.
    Thanks for the help everyone.

It's nice to know that not everyone in Texas names their kid Kinsey and Paisley :) good luck!

I had two people suggest I name her Blakely and I almost died. If I hear another Tinsley, Rayleigh or tayleigh I might die. :) Texas is very special with these naming trends.

Haha!  My apologies @ellab043.  I did get a little frustrated there with all the responses saying they liked Margeaux.  It's a great name - good choice :-)

Thanks lady! We had a struggle trying to decide and really love the name!

Oh god, do a lot of people do that in Texas?!?

Texas is awful. I know a...

Kings.ley, prim.ley, kynlee, multiple Kylie's spelled various ways, Kinsey (and a Kinzy), Blakely, Huxli, Tinley

I'm sure there are more but my head hurts too much. My dd is Caroline. I know it's common on here but IRL, it's quite refreshing to hear.
