i have done alot of research and im aware its a personal choice i only ask because one this is the place to talk about anything ... or so i thought ... i just wanted some insite from women who have already been through labor considering this is my first . i dont really have anyone around to ask .. THANK YOU too the people who actually gave some type of advice (: i appreciate it
@Ceciliarocha123 Did you come to a conclusion? Ive been following this board from time to time because this is my first baby too. Its interesting I feel like my family all say go natural and my friends scream get an epidural. Still will try my best to go epi free but some people opt for an epi and im thinking gosh should i be one of those people? (No pain tolerance lol) also if you give birth naturally the rush of oxytocin? Is supposed to be well worth it
I originally wanted to give birth pain med-free because I have always wanted to know exactly what childbirth feels like. Then I got GD and knew an induction was coming and changed my mind because I was NOT trying to feel any pitocin contractions.
But my labor progressed so quickly that my strategy of just holding out "until I really need it" worked to the end. So you see, I didn't choose natural birth, the game chose me. And you know what? It was really neat, I cherish the memories, I'm glad I felt everything, and I'd recommend it to anyone else. But that being said, if the occasion called for it, don't get so emotional if you choose an epidural. I can't believe how upset some people get about needing epidurals.
Oh well, this is all just completely, COMPLETELY a personal decision. The OP seemed kind of lazy, to be honest. Try reading the stories in the natural birth board or picking up a book- there are NUMEROUS titles on the subject.
I had planned for a vaginal birth with an epidural once I could no longer take the pain anymore...what I got was my water breaking at 29w, 6d, severe hemorrhaging that almost left my kid motherless, an emergency c section, and a ten week early baby with a 9 week NICU stay...good to know my birth wasn't "natural" because I needed medical intervention.
I ended up alive with a healthy (but tiny) baby to take home, so call me crazy if I could not give a flying fuck that some of you holier than thou sanctimommies deem my birth "unnatural"...
OP, do what's right for you and safest for your baby, and fuck what everyone else thinks.
Im opting to go natural just because it's proven that opting out of the epidural lowers your risk of csection, shortens your recovery time, reduces the need for a post birth catheter, and women in general just feel better afterwards. I know its going to be terrible during, but id rather have the more positive experience afterwards. Women have been giving birth for centuries without pain meds. Its definitely a personal decision, but I figure as long as I'm healthy enough to do it why not. Do some research on it. Its definitely achievable.

I have to say this generalization did not prove true for me. I felt the exact same after both births. Tired & hungry!
Oh my god. SO HUNGRY. And able to eat sugar for the first time in months thanks to GD. I wolfed down like half a variety pack of Pepperidge Farm Milanos
An epidural medicated the epidural space - not your bloodstream - and any absorbed medication would be negligible and unlikely to cause significant effects across the placenta. Certainly not enough to last a week. If your child was so somnolent that they didn't open their eyes for a week, they should not have been discharged for fear of oversedation and hypoxia. If be much more worried about these effects from narcotics given intravenously.
I would say its a very personal choice. For my first son I was dead set against it and changed my mind in the middle due to the pain I was experiencing. Now that ive done it with the epidural I wouldnt even attempt it without it now. It took so much unbearable pain away I was able to enjoy the rest of the labor and the delivery as well. Its up to you, I would say if you want to enjoy the labor and delivery epidural is the way to go. Itherwise expect pain you have never fathomed before but it goes away when the baby is out.
I love what I have read through most of these comments! Its your own choice hun. I wanted my baby to be born without any drugs in his system but changed my mind during labor. Oh my labor is something else! I wasnt trying to prove anything to anyone. I caved and got the epi and it was perso ally the best choice I ever made. I was focused when I had to push and I still felt giving birth I just did not feel excrutiating pain. Go in with an open mind and you will be happy with whatever choice you choose.
And keep in mind despite what some may think ANYTHING WE INGEST OR THAT GOES INTO OUR BODY DOES IN SOME WAY GET TO THE BABY. The epi doesnt usually harm a baby but it does in fact cross the placenta. My son was still completely alert and perfect with me recieving it but the doc will tell u there are small risks to you and or the baby.
This train got derailed. I planned on a med free birth with DD. Wound up with a scheduled c/s due to size. I did not know, at the time, that the ACOF recommends a vaginal birth even in the event of a large baby, barring complications.
Wanted a med free VBAC with DS, but wound up with a uerine rupture and an emergency c/s.
My point is that a lot of it is out of your control. Go in with a plan and be flexible should the need arise. Good luck.
What is up with all the haters? You all get a baby at the end of the day. This isn't a place to be rude and judgmental to other women. This is intended to help women make their own choices. Feel free to talk about how great your birth story was or how you came to the decision to labor one way or another -- it isn't meant to be a knock. We all made a choice that we all obviously found superior to another choice or we wouldn't have cared one way or another. That doesnt mean each choice is right for anyone. Wish each other luck in the decisions we all make.
