Vent. I can't with the stupidity

i need to vent here because I am 2 seconds from an altercation on FB.

As you know two police officers were killed on Saturday in NYC. They were targeted simply for being police officers. My husband is in law enforcement and this is terrifying to me. The fact that it's now more of a concern than ever, that I don't have to worry only about when he is AT work, but that stopping for coffee on his way in while in uniform could now be just as dangerous makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I have heard there are people applauding this, that they feel it's revenge, it's justified, etc. People saying it's funny, it needs to be done. Just totally disgusting remarks. I thankfully have no witnessed those.

But of course there is a lot of FB activity about it. I posted for prayers to the officers families and changed my profile pic to the badge with the blue line, as I always do when an officer is killed in the line of duty out of respect and remembrance.

A girl I grew up with but haven't seen in years just posted this:

"Can we please for the love of God get off the cop subject for 5 seconds? They chose that career. God bless, but come on!"

Nope. No no no no.

Then after a few people commented that she was insensitive (among other things) she said "I just said that for 5 seconds of peace. My phone is blowing up with this. People take things out of content. My bad I guess" and then: "does anybody know what 5 seconds of peace means? It's called a prayer"

Back pedaling much??? You were asking for a prayer! You wanted it to stop because it was annoying you blowing up your phone!!

WTAF?

I'm trying to refrain here because her mom is one of the sweetest people on the planet and my sister is close with her sister, but seriously?

I'm going to have to delete her.

/vent.

Sorry. Carry on.

  • Like I haven't heard of anyone who thinks that executing those officers was in any way acceptable. But if I did, I would tell them what a sick piece of shit they were.

I haven't encountered it personally. But I have heard of others saying people basically believe they deserve it as payment for michael brown, ferguson, etc. My husband actually said that someone he went to HS with posted something about how it wasn't sad they were killed, F the police, etc etc. He deleted and then posted that if anyone else feels that way they can delete him.

And I saw a few comments from people I don't know on friends of mine status' making similar remarks and saying all cops think they're above the law so they get what's coming to them.

    Sick bastards
  • I think there are definitely issues that need to be addressed in regards to police and the criminal justice system but in no way does killing two random officers do that or help the cause. I have to think the guy that did this wasn't right in the head if he didn't realize that. Or maybe he just didn't care. Not that that's an excuse but I don't see how anyone would do this, or try to justify it. I'm glad you deleted her.

This dude straight up assassinated 2 officers. I have so many feelings about this.

Seriously. Like, I am so upset about it and scared and just everything. Like 90% of my family is in law enforcement, not just my husband. My sister, my BIL, my cousin, her husband, my uncle. Like I worry about these people every day of my life and it hits too close to home.

This wasn't the outcome of an altercation or a raid gone bad or a robbery in progress (not that those are ever in any way justifiable or acceptable) but the guy literally was just like "I'm going to murder two random cops and fucking post pics of the blood on my pants on Instagram".

    FUCK

It's totally sick, but social media is voluntary, free and easily accessible and people can say what they want.

  • Sorry-- I hit post too soon and couldn't edit.

I totally get why this is such a trigger for you.  I have a lot of friends that are dating/ married to NYPD officers, so it hits home for me as well, but I always think when people get worked up by something they see on FB, the simple solution seems to be to maybe log off for a while or serioulsy consider deleting anyone that isn't in your core group of friends or close family (read: those you truly know and don't think you would be offended by on a regular basis.)

  • I just can't deal with this shit.

And then all the people posting that this happened because Obama sucks.  What???  How the fuck on a stick does this have anything to do with Obama?  Some guy was clearly off his rocker and went and murdered to POs in cold blood.  Obama had nothing to do with it!

  • Thank you to your husband for what he does every day!!! I have friends in law enforcement so I totally get what you are saying.

On a side note - its also shitty that a cop in Florida also got gunned down Saturday night I think it was and you never heard anything about it. And I read somewhere that some Boston cops were shot at last night.

    WTF is wrong with people?!

  • OP- I think this woman's comment was extremely insensitive.  I'm sorry you had to see it and it made your blood boil.  Glad you deleted her.

As someone who isn't on (and never has been on) FB: why was this blowing up her phone?  What does that mean?  Does that mean she has a setting that alerts her every time someone comments on FB?  Do people do this? If so, how does anyone get anything done b/c as I understand it, at every minute, there is a high probability that someone you know will post something/like something/comment on something. Are these alerts real?

Yes, I'm old and I'm not on IG or Twitter or anything else.  Right now, I'm grateful.  My phone makes noises when people call or text me.

Sorry to get up on the anti-guns platform again but HELLO when people have more access to firearms than they do to mental health care, these kinds of things are allowed to happen.

Sorry.  I know.  I'm the crazy anti-gun hippie lady.
Lol it's ok. I understand and agree there is a HUGE issue with a lack of mental health care. I'm a social worker so I see it all the time.

I'm not anti-gun though. I own my own handgun for protection, but I'm a big believe in screening and registering etc. There needs to be improvements in how people can access even legally owning a gun. (People will always be able to access them illegally sadly).
I will in a state where no one but law enforcement can carry. So I have a gun for my home but I cannot carry it outside the home. My husband can, and he carries everywhere he goes. Because it's a fucking sick world out there!

    Thank you.

I did hear about the FL officer and I believe they were comparing it. The two people said they were going underground and also made remarks to the effect of the police needing to be taught a lesson (paraphrasing).

So obviously the similarities make it even scarier like this is going to be a thing now... Copycats, etc

I am not sure if she had notifications turned on for when people post. You can but I don't know anyone who does. Like I only get a notification when someone comments on something I posted. So I don't know if she meant that she has notifications on for everyone (dumbass) or just that it was clogging her newsfeed
  • Whoa. Thankfully I have not seen anything like that on FB, only respectful posts. The killer, and those who support his actions, aside from being completely disgusting (to put it mildly), are only hurting the cause they claim to be supporting.

Has anyone read any updates on the woman he shot before he killed the officers? I'm having a hard time finding anything new. Hopefully she is okay.

I haven't heard anything other than that it was his ex gf. Prayers for her and her family as well.
  • You are right and she is a bitch. Good riddance.

I'm thinking it's because of the reality of his allegiance/agenda/stance/priorities or whatever you want to describe it as, which, IMO, this perfectly depicts:

If the almighty powers that be don't provide a clear and fair and colorless example of respecting authority and supporting the role of law enforcement, how would we expect the citizens to?

I'm in NY and have many many many feels about the state of this shit.

I have had it with this crap. You can't say NO to a police officer's orders. You just fucking can't.

    There's nothing to fucking protest.

Don't break fucking laws if you don't want to be bothered by the police.

CHANGE WITHIN YOURSELF AND ONLY THEN WILL YOU SEE REAL CHANGE!!!

    Good God

    Merry fucking Christmas!
  • Let's see how many people disagree. I'm sure all of you. Part of the problem.
  • Chanting we want cops dead is a valid protest?? While the people you wish death upon are there protecting your right to a "peaceful" protest???? Show me the validity.
  • Yeah because police never bother people that aren't doing anything wrong. Stop and frisk isn't a thing. Nope.

  • Omg-you are not getting NY news. The chants were in Ny:
    "What do we want?"
    "Dead cops"
    "When do we want it!"
    "Now"

If you can, try to find video and news reports from NYC sources. I'm thinking the real reports are not getting out to the rest of the country. I'm seeing/reading/watching/hearing it first hand all day.

I have no problem with that. I prefer a safer world.

So only NY is picking this up?

This is our local news. It's on all day. It's on everyone's mind and everyone is talking about it.

Not just a 2 minute bit or a clip on repeat on some national
    News channel.

He may not have publicly spoken, but Obama did release a statement about the murders.

    And finished his golf hole.
  • This is a CONSERVATIVE biased source.

The VIDEO is real. Commentary doesn't matter. It is not biased.

You think it's ok to protest like that? Cool.
