Sleep schedules

how much/often does your baby sleep and nap? She will usually sleep from 11pm-830am straight, or possibly wakes up once to nurse. But during the day might get two little 30 min naps out of her and that's it. She does tend to sleep a little more at daycare but not much. I'd like to get her to bed earlier, but I'm also concerned about how much she's not napping. What am I doing wrong?!

Re: Sleep schedules

  • Some babies are harder to put to sleep than others. Mine don't go to sleep when they're tired -- they power through and get really grumpy. With DS I've done a much better job of roughly tracking his awake time then fighting to get him asleep than I did with DD. One of her old daycare teachers once said that the first nap often sets the tone for the whole day so I've taken that as advice. I try to get him asleep for a good first nap within two hours of wakeup.

We wakeup at 7ish, then he naps at approximately 9am, 11:30am, 2pm, and 4:30pm. Often he only sleeps for 30 minutes but usually one of those naps lasts for an hour. Though it varies which one. The last nap sometimes gets cut short since we leave at 5pm to get DD from preschool.

  • Do you have any suggestions with getting baby to nap? This is my first one and totally clueless. Usually if she does nap it's because she falls asleep nursing, but yes otherwise she gets really grumpy.
  • Usually he nurses to sleep, sometimes with me singing lullabies, shushing him, or playing white noise on my phone. Sometimes I hold him and bounce on a yoga ball to settle him. And then there are the days where I'm holding him, he's nursing, and I'm bouncing on the yoga ball while shushing all at the same time. He often takes 5-10 minutes to settle. If I get frustrated I'll walk around the house with him and try again in 5-10 minutes.
  • My LO used to be very similar and take very few naps(45 min max in length) and sleep 7-4, wake to nurse, and then 5-630. Now we are on the struggle bus. Naps continue to be poor and even harder to come by, DS wakes up almost hourly until midnight, again at 2am, then sleeps until 630 am. I believe this is caused by his new skill of rolling. I have no specific napping advice; just that I have heard from others that some babies are just not good nappers and some get better by about 6 months old. Hopefully that's the case for us!

  • We've been doing 4-30 min naps or 3 naps with one longer. Luckily she's not too hard to get down....just doesn't sleep long. Always naps better out and about. Thinking the little wake ups help her transition through sleep cycles when she's not in her crib. Haven't tried the mini wake up before 30 minute transition yet...

  • This is our general routine:

    Wake up 7am
Nap 9-11 (nap starts later on preschool drop off days or if he sleeps later in the morning)
    Nap 1-3
    Catnap 5-5:30
    Bedtime 7:30pm

No MOTN eating but he does wake for the paci.

Honestly nothing I specifically did ds is just super easy to get to sleep. He just starts showing cues and we put him down and he goes right to sleep. Typical schedule:
    Wakes 6:45
    Nap 8-10
    Nap 12-2
    Nap 3-4
    Nap 5-6
    Bedtime 7

Then sleeps for 7p-6:45 with a dream feed at 10p. LO is 21 weeks.
