Sorry more questions!! Newborn Sleepers!

edited December 2014 in Multiples
How many newborn sleepers, sleep gowns, and sleep sacks should I have on hand? I have bought some, because I didn't get a ton of clothes at my shower. (only got one newborn stage outfit) I have some sleepers and outfits for 3 months, but I think I might need to stock up more on that size. Also I got 2 packs of short sleeve onsies. 0-3 and 3 months. What do I do with onsies? Wear with sleepers? Thanks!! 6 weeks or less and getting nervous!

Edited to add girls were 3.3 and 3.8 in weight 2 weeks ago! Next growth scan is the 23rd. MFM is hoping I have at least 5.5 pound babies.

Re: Sorry more questions!! Newborn Sleepers!

  • Sleep sacks, as many as you want. My boys came out too tall for preemie sleepers, and they grew too tall for newborn sleepers in just a month or so, despite being born three weeks early - it's not just weight you need to consider for sizing. If you can find the sleepers without feet, those may last quite a while... but generally, I'd recommend sticking with sleep sacks and gowns until you know how big they are :)

  • I have about 12-15 sleepers for each twin. They were hand me downs so I took them but I could get by with less. I would have 7 a piece. My twins are 10wks and are out growing some newborn sleepers.

I think newborn is usually 5-8lbs and 0-3 is 8-11lbs. But you will find brands all fit differently. And they will outgrown by length first.

As for the onsies you can use them to layer. I don't know how far along you are or how cold it is where u live, so that will depend on how often you use them. The rule of thumb is usually dress them in the same amount of layers you have on, plus one extra.

  • My preference is zipper sleepers for the first 2-3mo, so that's all the NB clothes I needed. I didn't have much use for onesies or pants until 0-3mo. I also barely used pants until 3-6mo but I have spring/summer babies.

For quantity, I had about 10-15 sleepers / outfits. You just have to do laundry more frequently, that's all.

@cls78‌ I just did their laundry last night! You have perfect timing with your question lol

Along the same note... Do the babies just wear onesies with blankets or something? Everyone is telling me to stock up but it has to be cold for them with no pants on ?

  • We wear onsies under the sleepers and I bought 2 packs of onsies for each girl which works well. My girls are pukers and we go through at least 2 outfits a day. And we use bibs each feeding. I recommend a lot of bibs and burp cloths!!!!!
TTC 2 years- Me and DH (28) with (severely) low sperm count- less than 40 total (last 2 SA showed only 5 and 6 sperm each)
    IVF #1: ER 1/23/13- 4 eggs retrieved, 3 eggs fertilized; ET with 1 embryo 1/28/13 2 frosties beta #1 2/5 was 4.8- beta #2 2/7 3.5; BFN
FET #1- transferred one beautiful 4AA embie. Praying this is my take home baby. Beta 5/7/13- BFFN!!!
    IVF #2: ER 7/17/13: 6R/3F- transferred 1 blast and 1 10 cell embryo 5dt.   Beta hell.  #1 2.5, #2 2.2- BFFFN! REALLY?
IVF #3: ER 12/1 and only 2 retrieved.  1 fertilized with ICSI.  Was planning on transferring one fresh and one frozen....fresh was only 14 cells at day 5...CANCELLED and devastated due to 5cm blood filled cyst in ovary and blood in uterus.
IVF #4: Antagonist protocol with endometrial scratch day one of stims.  ER 4/21: 6R/4M/3F- transferred 2 beautiful blasts (5dt) and one was hatching!  No frosties but hoping we won't need it!  Beta 5/4/14- 444(8dp5dt), Beta #2 10dp5dt 1002!  THIS HAS GOT TO BE IT!!!!!!!!!!  First US 5/15 we saw two of the most beautiful gestational and yolk sacs I have ever seen!
    ****FINALLY PREGNANT WITH DI/DI TWINS!!!!!!!

@AnotherDreamer‌ I just washed my bibs and burp cloths and here is what I got...

    8 Bibs
    4 Burb Cloths

I also got a 4 pack of flannel receiving blankets I bought at Carter's. I bought these instead of their burp cloths, because their burp cloths were small. Are these good for burping and spit up too?

  • You only need two sleepsacks each.  I use one fleece and one cotton.
Onesies are like undershirts or can take the place of shirts for outfits with pants. I use them under sleep n plays to keep their little bellies warm during diaper changes.
0-3 months and 3 months are the same size.  The sizes that are 3 mos, 6 month, 9, 12, etc... are the top end of the range, so 9 months would typically fit a 6-9 month old.
With my first I wasted a whole bunch of clothes because I didn't understand the sizing convention.

For 5.5 lb babies, you will definitely need some more newborn sizes.  Mine were on either side of 5lbs, and in newborn sizes for a couple months. I would stick to mostly sleepers (sleep n plays), they are the easiest to deal with.  When juggling two babies, you don't want to deal with too many outfits changes.  I'd change them into a different sleeper once a day or so, unless they got dirty somehow.  So depending on how often you want to do laundry get that many days of sleepers plus one extra times 2 babies.  I ended up doing laundry every couple a days anyway simply because I'd be washing blankets and burp cloths and bibs a lot.

Now I do their laundry weekly or so, so I have more of everything.  Plus they stay in sizes longer now, so I don't feel too bad keeping a larger wardrobe.

  • Yes, receiving blankets make great burp cloths.
My fave are actually real trifold cloth diapers (not the gerber kind, but something like from green mountain).  They are so soft and fluffy and absorbent.

For actual receiving blankets where you would like to swaddle, Aden & Anais blankets all the way.  And my girls love them so much, they have become their loveys.  They get softer every time you wash them too :)  Totally worth the $$.

  • In newborn size I have 10 sleepers, 4 cotton gowns, and 6 one size fleece sleep sacs. (Oops!). lol. I also bought them monogrammed gowns for taking them home from the hospital, but I am only using them for that and putting them away as a keepsake.

I might need to get a pack or two of newborn onsies since I only have 3 months. Would you buy more sleepers?

  • The one size sleep sacks... are those carters?  If so they'll be fine for awhile.  I think they work up to 9 months.  They can just wear a onesie at night under those in the warmer months.  For the newborn stage until they roll over, you will likely swaddle them instead.  Some babies prefer that to having their arms free, some don't.
I would absolutely get more sleepers, probably 4 more.
I personally didn't like the gowns, they were really hard to get them on them for some reason.

I suspect as people come see you they will bring clothes, so hopefully you'll get more.
Have you gotten into contact with a local multiples group?  I know mine sells stuff, especially clothes, all the time.

  • We have about a dozen sleepers. The onesies are worn under the sleeper (that is what the nicu did). Laundry is done daily or every other day.
