NBR- Bedwetting (child, not me)

I have a 5 year old that still wets the bed routinely. He refuses anything like a pull-up and we are trying everything we can think of to help. We make sure he uses the potty before bed, no large drinks before bed or an hour before. We used to try to wake him in the middle of the night, but that almost seem to make it worse. His room is warm, he uses covers so he's not too cold. We also do our best not to humiliate him when he does have an accident, making sure that he feels supported, but we do have him clean up after himself (wet clothes/blankets/sheets into washer, new sheets onto the bed). I am debating one of those wetness alarms, but I have no experience. My other 2 were easy to PL overnight. This isn't an every night thing... but it may as well be.

Any advice?

  • Have you taken him to the doctor to see if his urinary tract is OK? Cronic bladder infections will cause bedwetting, or weakened pelvic muscles.

No I haven't. He never complains about anything bothering him (no pain or fevers) so I never considered a bladder infection. :( I'll see if I can get him into his pedi. Thanks!

  • I would also say take him to the doctor to see if something's wrong with his urinary tract. Other than that though, I can't really suggest much else. My oldest is 3 and still sleeps in pull ups most nights. It may help you though(depending on if you have a cloth mattress) by putting a puppy pad down under his sheet so it doesn't get on the bed and you can just change it when you change his sheets. Sorry I couldn't help more!
  • Are the accidents happening in the middle of this night or closer to when he wakes up. I know some sleep consultants recommend waking 10 minutes or so early in the morning and going right into the bathroom because it can be during the waking up that accidents happen as opposed to the middle of the night. Good luck!
  • My step son just turned 7, and we're still dealing with this somewhat. I'd say up until about 2 months before he turned 7, it was an every night thing. We stopped giving him drinks after dinner, and we got the big sticky pads you can put on the sheets (by goodnights, I believe) so we didn't have to do wash every morning.
Our pediatrician said it's normal for many kids to continue to have these issues up until age 7. Some even longer. Good luck!
  • No personal experience, but it is pretty developmentally appropriate. Night training and day training are very different and kids just do both at different rates. I do agree with having him checked out, just in case it's medical.

  • Thanks for the advice/support, ladies!

Bostonchelle, I am not sure... I know that he's usually dry at midnight when I check on him, but he's wet by 6:00am (our wake up). Maybe I'll start checking him when I get up to pee around 4:30, and get him up a little bit sooner to see if that helps as well.

I am hopeful he'll grow out of it, and we really do try not to make a big deal of it with him, but I know that he's nervous about spending nights away from home.

My SS wet the bed regularly until he was 7. We think his was just pure laziness. He just didn't want to get up at night.
He's had a few accidents this year (he's 8 now) but it is much better.
The doctor wasn't too concerned when we told him. He said he would grow out of it. His mother and both of her brothers were bed wetters too.
He eventually stopped when told him he would have to wash ALL of the laundry in the hamper (he was already washing his own sheets and putting them on and off his bed with no care)

A waterproof fitted sheet is a lifesaver! You may have wet sheets buy atleast the mattress is not getting covered in pee nightly

  • I would get in touch with his pediatrician. Bed wetting can be due to a medical reason such as a kidney infection. I would not be surprised if the doctor ordered a kidney bladder ultrasound just to make sure everything looks ok.
