This time of year, especially, I can't wrap my head around senseless violence. It makes my heart hurt. No more than 30 miles from my home, a madman is on the loose after having killed 6 and injuring 1 of his family members. Now, I hear of a Taliban suicide bombing at a school in Pakistan.
I can't.

I don't think this is DD, this is a place where we can express our feels, happy, sad or othewise.
It is just sad to think what the world has come to...

I agree, it's so hard to hear, especially at this time of the year.
But - I'm glad I opened this thread for this story: That is awesome!
Regardless of your religious beliefs or lack there of, we should always be compassionate and selfless towards one another. I know during the holidays acts of good will take the spotlight, and I'm guilty of doing about 80% of my annual giving of time and money this time of year...but please, if not other time of the year, consider how you can bring some beauty to this ugly world today, tomorrow, etc.
We need it.

ETA: posted too soon.
Also re: torture. No matter what these people have done they are still human. There is no excuse to use torture tactics IMO.
Eta I am not implying that he tortured anyone. He did not as far as I know.
And isn't the second borderline traitorous?

Or just, "Don't take the lives of the innocent" serum. I'll accept either.

Interestingly enough, my purpose of bringing up these events kind of goes against all that. My intent wasn't to cause strife between those of us on opposing sides of the matter of torture. I wanted to take this as an opportunity to appreciate where we live, what we have, and essentially to strive to be decent human beings to account for the large handful of indecent ones among us.
Well look at that...being the bigger person? Maybe it WILL make a difference here.

But on the other hand, I am not the most forgiving person, and so I have to reconcile my desire for vengeance against the usefulness of torture. Since it has not proven useful, are we ok with it because we really just want them to suffer anyway? If I were truly honest I would have to say that I would be more ok with just killing terrorists than torturing them, but then again, that would make us no better than them. I have a lot of conflict between vengeance and "the right thing."
Thank you for saying what I've been struggling with finding the right words for all day. It was much simpler than I was thinking, it turns out.

While I agree we should not employ methods of torture, I don't believe doing so is "stooping to their level." When it comes to terrorists executing helpless children and how we deal with them I just can't apply a principle of universality as strongly as I would otherwise.
Is it our unconditional imperative that we must never resort to torture? Yes, I believe so, as noted up thread it's been proven ineffective. But isn't it also an absolute requirement that we take measures to prevent the senseless acts of violence against vulnerable members of society? As human beings we are all obligated not to treat other people with brutality, but doing so in the name of seeking information to protect potential victims is not as morally bankrupt as those who would just seek victims.
ETA: I like to think we will always act in accordance with our principles, but on this issue I believe the question for some becomes whether or not we sacrifice that for the sake of safety. Is it our moral imperative to always refrain from using methods of torture or is it use any means necessary to extract information that could prevent future attacks?
If A was on a bus with a bomb and I have that SOB who planted it sitting right in front of me you better believe I'm clawing out his fucking eyeballs trying to get him to tell me how to disarm it. Moral high ground be damned.

Torture should never be used as a form of punishment. If torture is undertaken as a means of gleaning information and were proven successful, I somewhat reluctantly admit that I would support it.
In other news, there's been an update on the PA shooting spree I'd mentioned in my initial post. Law enforcement official have reported: "Bradley Stone, the man prosecutors say is responsible for killing his ex-wife and five of her family members and shooting one other before going on the run, has been found dead in the woods near his home." Press conference forthcoming.

Is the need to protect people from terrorist attacks greater than the need to say, well shit, we had that fucker locked up and knew he was planning a large scale assault but I feel so damn good about the fact that we bonded over childhood stories and cookie dough ice cream so I'll sleep just fine tonight even though he slaughtered 30 school kids?
Again, I acknowledge it doesn't work, but I'm saying if it did I think the imperative is to get any information we can. The right of the schoolchildren to live supersedes the terrorist's right to not be subjected to torture.
