Pregnant after 35

Now I'm nervous. Talk to me re: contractions.

This is our fourth baby, but I have really never had any Braxton-Hicks before. I had a few contractions right at the end or pregnancy with our third baby, but I only knew b/c they told me while I was on the monitor. I've never had contractions for labor w/out pitocin, either. So....I was super confident that this baby would also be late and I'd have zero progress as usual as the due date approached. But this time, I am having some mild contractions, and I'm really getting nervous b/c it's not been "normal" for me before! I was having some last night. Was having them every 5 minutes this morning during my non-stress test. they aren't horribly painful, but I can feel them. Cervix is still closed.

I'm drinking water and trying to take it easy. Some people go on for weeks like this, right?? I really don't want to have this baby before Christmas!!

  • I have never had them before until this pregnancy (4th pregnancy). They started for me around 20 weeks. They have really ramped up for me over the last few weeks (I am now 35 weeks)and are even painful at times. I am supposed to get checked on Thursday so I am excited to see if they are doing anything down there or if they are just being mean.

  • I had an irritable uterus (Contractions every day) last pregnancy yet still made it all the way to 39 weeks. I was hanging out at 2 cm, 80% effaced, and -2 station for a couple weeks! The last two weeks I had a couple episodes where the contractions were getting closer together and more intense for a couple hours and then petered out. Totally messed with my mind. I didn't even know that could happen! But once I went into labor and it continued to progress it was a totally different experience. They got much more intense. ;) All that to say, labor and contractions aren't always a linear path. Btw, DD had a totally healthy birth.

  • I never felt them, but if your cervix is closed, that is a good thing.  At my stress tests, I was showing contractions all the time but never felt them and my cervix was closed so they sent me on my way.  Maybe since they told you last time when you were having a contraction, you are able to identify them easier this time because you recognize the sensation.

  • I had a ton of Braxton Hicks this pregnancy! Started around 18-20w which to me is crazy early compared to last time. And towards the end they were pretty regular and powerful, which I wonder if they were the real deal and not BH...

My doc kept saying if you have them more than 6x an hour to give them a call. Did you ask about that when you were getting your NST done? What did they say about that?
  • I've had them with all of my babies. The rule of thumb is that if you can't talk through a contraction, you should head to the hospital.  So if you're at the point where contractions are regular and you have to actually breathe through them.. go to triage.  I was that way with my son and I was in total denial. lol he was a week early which I wasn't worried about but I had already gone to triage twice for false labor and i didn't want to drive all the way there for them to send me home. So I kept calling my mom and my BFF and talking to my husband and saying really do you think I.. hold on.. breathe.. breathe..  do you think I really need to go?  My BFF was finally like um excuse me but you can't talk to me through these contractions.. you're telling me to hold on while you breathe.. so yes.. you need to go.

Learned my lesson and went all on my own with baby number 2. :)

  • Mine started around 32 weeks, could feel pressure on my bladder and abd felt hard. That was all. Told it was normal development, right on time. Had my cervix checked at u/s Monday am still long and closed.... if I didn't feel them in my bladder, I wouldnt know I was having them.
