Trying to Get Pregnant

semen vs CM

I'm having trouble charting my CM this week.  We had sex Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.  Sunday morning I could not distinguish anything other than semen.  This morning was the same problem but this afternoon when I peed I had what seemed to be EWCM on the toilet paper.  It was definitely stretchy.  Is semen ever stretchy?  Normally I do not have EWCM at all so I was surprised.  I do get watery CM, which I notice because that's the only time I really have CM on my underwear - but I can't tell if that's happening this week or if it's just semen on my underwear.

I'm usually anovulatory but I'm pretty sure I O'd last cycle.  I think my cycle may be adjusting since I started Synthroid (2.5 months ago) to treat mild hypothyroidism... which is very exciting but it's also making it hard for me to interpret what's happening in my body.  I'm pretty sure I O'd on CD22 or 23 last month.  I'm currently on CD12 so wasn't expecting to have fertile CM yet.

Sorry for the jumbled explanation, I'm just confused and not sure how to explain this more clearly.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Thanks everyone.

@risscabobs - yes, I am charting BBT - that's why I believe I ovulated last month. So far this month no shift but that would make sense if this is the beginning of my fertile CM.

@estakis - thanks for the link.

  • I can assure you that DH's fluid is not the same as my ewcm. After it's been hanging around in there for a day or so it's super stretchy and super clear. My own cm is never completely clear and does not stretch nearly as far. I had to make myself a note about it last month actually.

Point being, it's 100% possible. Charting CM is about establishing YOUR patterns of fertility that are particular to YOUR body, which comes down to telling the difference between your "dry days" and days where you are potentially fertile.

Once my cm changes I hit the OPK's.

  • @bracingourselves - So for you semen is actually clearer and more stretchy than CM?  That contradicts what PPs have said so I just want to clarify.

My fertility patterns have been changing (thankfully) since treating my thyroid issue, which is great but unfortunately means I have to re-learn all these signs for myself.  And I was one of the lucky recipients of a fake batch of OPKs (see the Wondfo thread if you haven't yet) so I can't rely on OPKs right now either!  I re-ordered and the real Wondfos should be here tomorrow or Wednesday but I'm in the dark until then!

I will just treat it as EWCM for now, note everything on my chart and figure out what was going on once I (hopefully) get a temp shift.

Yes I realize it contradicts what the PP's have said, but due to my DH's particular chemistry, or possibly mine, or some combination thereof, nothing that he deposited ever came out of my body in anything other than a clear, stretchy state regardless of where I am in my cycle.

Semen =/= seminal fluid. You can have a lot of seminal fluid, very little semen swimming around in it. Female arousal fluid =/= CM. Arousal fluid + cervical fluid + seminal fluid at totally different chemical/protein/pH makeups = unclear CM reading.

I'm not totally sure why we treat women's bodies as this huge mystical thing and act like all men are exactly the same, but that's a conversation for a different time.
