There has to be a reason

...for this 4 month sleep regression business.

Is anyone trying anything different with LO's bedtime routine or just riding it out? Tonight is the first night I swaddled DD with one arm out. She's still sleeping in the RnP so I think my plan is to wean her off the swaddle and then transition to the crib. But then I think maybe I should transition to the crib and then wean off the swaddle. But then I think she's already starting to roll front to back so back to front can't be far away and I'll have to stop swaddling soon anyway.

Re: There has to be a reason

  • If it were meeeeee I would wean off the RNP first because once she's in an open crib she'll probably want some containment if she's used to swaddle and RNP boundaries.

Now let's talk about this damn regression...it's real and it's fierce. I saw a lactation consultant today to do a pre and post feed weight because I was thinking maybe my daughter hasn't been getting enough BM and that's why she's waking up sooner and then cluster feeding throughout the wee hours of the morning. Turns out my supply is fine but she attributes it to her not eating as much during the day because she is so distracted. So she's hungry sooner. She also said this's time is huge for them developmentally, hence the regression:/ so my plan is to feed every 4 hours so that she's more hungry and will actually do a good feed. We shall see!!

  • Good luck.  This is also our first night w/o swaddle too....and I am a little nervous.  I opted to go both arms out since DS naps that way already.  Lately he has been waking up at night pumping his legs up and down bc his arms are swaddled up.  So I figured it may be time to try arms out.

When swaddled he always went down "drowsy but awake" and fell asleep rather quickly (i know i am lucky for this)./blockquote>

Ditto for my LO. I'll have to keep this trick in mind! Good luck to you tonight! Let me know how it goes.

@leannerivers‌ I agree your way makes more sense. My reasoning is that I want to do something now and she'll be in the RnP when we go home for the holidays so I thought it best to not spend time transitioning to the crib just to have her go back in a RnP. Also I think she really likes sleeping on her side so my hope is after the loss of the swaddle she'll happily and peacefully just jump to STTN on her side in her crib. Wam bam thank ya ma'am

  • Oooooh that makes more sense-I'm with ya! GL!!
  • How did I make that all a quote? Weird. I don't understand the ways of clever bumping. Mobile doesn't help I guess.

  • I thought Itty bit would be a wreck when she was transitioned to her crib from her swing but she was ok. She woke up once or twice the first 2 nights but then she was ok. She hasn't been swaddle since after a month old though.

I would transition to the crib then out of the swaddle. Transitioning to the crib may actually be easier than transitioning out of the swaddle.

  • We've had 2 weird nights in a row with DD now. Wakes up an extra time and from about 5 am on she is fussing off and on until it becomes a full blown cry by 6 or 6:30. I hope this is the extent of the 4 month sleep regression for us since she'll be 4 months next Wednesday.

Agree with PP, if LO is used to the security of the RnP, you'll probably want to transition to crib first. One step at a time. Get LO used to the crib first then the swaddle. Unless you're genuinely concerned that LO will roll before that transition is made...

Someone mentioned to me a while ago when I was concerned about DD moving so much in her crib, put blankets or foam swim noodles under the crib sheet to make a little alley for LO to lay in. That might help you first transition to the crib without LO rolling over, and then when you take away the swaddle it might still help her feel secure.

  • She slept 9 PM - 7 AM Monday night...then she was up every hour Wednesday then up every 2-3 hours last night.  It really doesn't matter what we do.  Do they naturally grow out of this?  I can't believe my ability to function on such little sleep but I think my body is actually getting used to it.
  • The more I experience, and the more I read your experiences, the more and more convinced I become that what I do (swaddle, crib, etc.) makes no difference all. Babies gonna baby.

This made me lol. Babies gonna baby. Never were truer words spoken. This is why I don't invest time or money in reading books on how to 'train' my babe. Sadly though, at the end of the day I still wonder "NOW what should I try??"

  • Is this the thread where I get throat punched because DS is still sleeping through the night?

I keep waiting for it though. I feel like he's building up to start having horrific nights again.

No throat punch. But definite scowl face ;) I had it lucky from the day she came home so I'll try to persevere through this...

  • The past three nights have been hell on earth. Nursing constantly day and night, LO is only content if my boobs are within a foot of her face. This is worse than any growth spurt we've gone through and I don't know whether to attribute it to teething, developmental milestones (she's gearing up to roll), her 4 mo vaccines, or a horrible combo of all of the above.
  • Ugh, stopped swaddling LO about two weeks ago and at the exact same time (as my lactation consultant told me to expect) he pretty much completely weaned himself off the formula top-up he's been having since birth. Now we've gone from a sleep pattern of mostly 3 and some 4-5 hour stretches to nursing every 2 hours and then every hour or so from about 4:30 a.m. until I get so exhausted I bring him into bed with me and nurse him side lying while I sleep. This is something I swore I would never do. It sucks!! Because everything happened at once I have no idea if the frequent waking is due to moving or hunger. I feel so helpless and just went through a weepy, grumpy day strategizing with DH about how we're going to tackle this from now on.

Sorry for the length, this just caught me on a bad day. Any advice would be appreciated.
  • @seamonkey0814I keep trying different things one at a time to see if I can unlock the secret. First it was swaddling with one arm out. Then decreasing the temp in the nursery. Then increasing the temp in the nursery. Then changing the "tune" on the sound machine. Tonight will be turning off the night light. So far nothing has made a difference at all. BUT she went to sleep at almost 2 hours ago and I still haven't heard from her. So maybe pitch black will be the winner! Just know you're not alone, lots of us are suffering right now. My LO was going 6 hours, waking up for one quick 20 minute feed and then sleeping another 5. Now it's up every 1 1/2-2 hours. This too shall pass.

  • welp. 2 seconds after I posted that she woke up. Not completely atypical for her though so I am hopeful the rest of the night goes smoothly now.

  • Oh no! Another question I had was, how long do you guys try new sleep solutions before you decide they don't work? I thought three nights seemed reasonable but it feels like a long time when you're in the middle of it!
  • @seamonkey0814‌, I would try at least 3 nights if you can handle it. Though I found that DD pretty much does what she does at night. DS seems similar thus far. With DD, her sleep would go from terrible to impossible at night and right as I thought I was going totally crazy she'd change things up again and go back to her normal terrible sleeping.
  • It's kind of like encouraging labor, right? There are a million things to try and none of them work.

Trying my girl in her crib tonight! Been putting it off because she will be two floors below our bedroom. any tips? Thinking she will sleep better - I feel like my husband wakes her up a lot!
  • @leannerivers‌ We all sleep much better now that Nico is in his own room. We have an audio monitor turned down low and I sleep very soundly. Good luck!

  • @seamonkey0814, honestly I only give it 1 night if it doesn't make a bit of difference. If I notice a titch of improvement I'll give it a couple more nights. I guess the way I look at it, it's not a "goal" I'm trying to achieve. Like when I transition her to her crib, I'll certainly keep trying that but things like changing the tune on the noise machine...I don't care what song she likes so if one doesn't make a difference, I try something else the next night.
